PA.JUNE21 Montesa's Curt Comer racked up his second win in three rounds of the AMA/NATC National Championship Observed Trials Series to take a slim' lead in the point standings over Morgan Kavanaugh -- 42 to 37. Kavanaugh put his Bultaco into second place at the Cascade National. five marks off Comer's winning 42 mark ride. Don Sweet placed third at 53 marks and also stands third in the standings with 28 points. Sweet is Montesa mounted. Fourth place went to SWM's Jack Stites by virtue of more cleans -- 22 to 18 -- than Montesa mounted Bryan Benjamin. The site of the event was Logues Farm. an area of rolling hills and spectacular waterfalls. The Pennsylvania Trials Riders, organizers of the 1978 World Championship round at nearby Roaring Branch. were the hosts. The proceeds from the event were donated to Multiple Sclerosis through the Athletes for MS campaign. Bob Logue Motorsports, Hills Motorsports and Cosmopolitan Motors were among the many supporters. Marc Williams and District 6 Number One trials rider Jerry Young laid out an eight mile. 20 section loop which covered two scenic mountains. The course was in three basic parts. The first bein@' off-camber, rocky hills and hillclimb sections. The second contained such sections as Ml. Rushmore and the final part had riders ascending up Cascade Run. The most challenging section must have been 20. the Wall of Death. No rider could manage even a three on this section. Cascade Run is a trials spectators dream. The stream falls several hundred feet over large steps and huge rocks. Comer's ride was consistent as he proved he was more than up to the challenges thrown at him. With only two loops to complete. each ride had to be the very best rider effon possible. Kavanaugh wasn't that far off the pace and proved he is tough in any terrain. Sweet had a bit of trouble in some of the traps especially number four which caught him for two unexpected fives. Senior honors were in order for NATC founder Wiltz Wagner. Super Senior Bob Micket had a super Pennsylvania weekend. Micket took home two first place plaques from the Sunday night awards banquet. Bob rode his Bultaco to very respectable scores of 57 Saturday and 86 Sunday. The series will resume September 5 • in Washington State.
