Wheaton could only see the back of Baptista's leathers and had to deal with the large amounu of sand coming from Bsaptista's smooth flat traclt tires. Mae Howard put his Husky acJ'OIII the line for third followed closely by local Honda TT'er Doug Aiken who tried to put the move on Howard's Husky but slid out in the slithery desert sand letting the paclt by. only to blaze some valiant last lap antics putting him back in fourth. In the 125cc class, Terry Shine (Yamaha Store) took his heat and the A main, but not without a battle from another local. Chris Humphrey (Yam). Shine smoked his way to the front with good starts and. luckily. knobby tires to hold off advances from Humphrey and Rick Lilly (Suz of Bend). Even though the track was slippery. it still provided the spectators with some hair-raising racing and spills for those who chose not to run knobbies. Results 80 MAIN: 1. Jeff PecIc (Yernl; 2. JUNE 6 McGill Yamaha team rider Mark Key worked a hard-fought double' win at the opening round of Stockton M.e. short track racing at the Lodi Cycle Bowl and furthered his hold on the top Black Plate position. It was a dusty beginning for the summer months with one good note about some Friday night racing that might start here soon under the M&D Promotions flag. Pee Wee riders Johnny McGill and Matt Wait took home their brass in the little guy division. Winkie Freitas continued to dominate the top Mini Expert spot, talting the 80cc class win on his Honda tuned by Del Cal1sen with Mike Macedo doing the following tonight. Ted Taylor still held the top 80cc Junior spot with Jon Noyer in for first Novice. Kelley FISCher took the top lOOcc Expert spot for the FISCher Construction! Salinas Yamaha team and Marv Dunham took the point position in the 125200cc Novice/Junior combination over Dwight Linch and Ron Rislt. A big turnout of 250cc Novices shows some positive signs for the flat track sport. Danny McDonnell took the win on the Frank Gillespie-tuned CR250 Honda over returning Gary Caves, Doug Grote, Billy Taylor and Rich Frisk. Mark Key and the YZ250 Yamaha made all the right moves in the 250cc Expert bash winning a thriller over Joey Knight on the ex-Jim Filice Yamaha. Joe continues to edge up with the Knight-framed model that is reputed to be the fastest short tracker in the country with a 40mm Mikuni carbo and does it work. Dave Boyles had some trouble holding the line taking third over Bill Arbogast. Bill Knight borrowed the Cycle Works Dan Malfatti XR350 and looked real good until the comers bit him. The win went to John Carter over Kelly Bennett in the 360cc Junior class. Combining all the big-bore Novices made for a big class, and the winner was first timer Dennis Schwatlta who will obviously be back for more. Dave Painter was second with Don Clasby having to settle for third over Roland Hollis. Jeff Martins and Randy Rincon. Bill Knight got his stuff back together to take the 500cc Junior class win over Roy Fisher. Despite much trouble in getting 500cc Expert underway. it was Mark Key once again the winner on the immaculate Knightframed TT500 in front of Craig Scroggins on the Glaze Electric Yamaha with Dave Boyles third.
