Darrell White here. but White went by Just before the end to win. Water buffalo makes a comeback at AFM GSIR RR By Karl Okamoto SONOMA, CA, JUNE 7 Darrell White, aboard his classic 1972 Suzuki GT750. held off a last-ditch effon by David Emde on his Suzuki GS750 to capture 62 the overall Supentreet flag at Golden State Raceway. White, sponsored by Oakland, Cycle Connection in followed Emde for mOlt of the race before paJling the California Suzuki of Orange rider. "I followed him around and he was getting aquirrely. I caught up from behind, and I could outbrake him going into (tum) eleven." Emde slipped one last time in tum eleven just before the checkered, allowing White the better drive coming out of the tum. The beginning of the day was marred by an unfonunate tum of evenu for AFM' number one John Glover. Glover was practicing on his new Yamaha TZ250H prior to the races. A small deer appeared on the track in John's path, and the impact tore the animal in half and smashed theHmodel. "I came down tum nine and a deer stepped out from the left. I saw it 10 feet before I hit it. That's the only place on the track you can redline a TZ in sixth gear," he said. Glover escaped with only a broken collarbone. "The deer smell the water from the filtration plant (in the center of the track infield), and when they see it they go straight for it," added AFM chapter prez Vance Breese. Glover, who had commented earlier on his lucky strealt this season, will be out of action for about six weeks. His luck is still holding out. While Dave Emde was blitzing the big bore Production race on his GS750, Chris Steward was close behind and staying ahead of Dennis Smith (Cycle Tune Kaw GPzII00) to preserve his second overall placing and lint'place Open Production claM slot. "It's been a good year. This has been my seventh straight win for me this year," said the APA Trucking/Pasadena Suzuki·sponsored GSllOO rider. Steward also pilou the same· bike in the Open Box Stock clalS, and came from nowhere last year to challenge Whitney Blalr.eslee's Kawasaltis most of theseaaon. The 250<:c GP contest was a .tOIl-up most of the race, with Tom Chew (Yam TZ250) fmally yielding to Dave Garoutte (DKG/Yam TZ250) four turns from the finish. "He was goin' as fast as I wanted to go. I stayed with him and there were a few places on the traclr. that I had him," remarked Garoutte, the AFM and AMA veteran. ''I've never led a 250cc GP race in my life," said Chew, of Sacramento. "Garoutte let me know afterwards where I was messing up. He didn't want to wear himself out leading me, so I wore myself out leading him." In other action, Bill Mullins showed up with special experimental slicks made especially for 125cc road racen by Goodyear, possibly a prelude to production runs for the small-bore clau. Louis Vallerga (Palo Alto Yam RD400) prevailed over ex·Can-Am rider Chuck McAvoy (Hon 500) and Brian Tilseth (Yam RD550) in a very tight 600cc Supentreet contest. . The next race at Golden State International Raceway will be July 12, followed by the FlM race at Laguna Seca on July 19. The annual AFM Six Dwayne Chung rode his Berkeley Yamaha TZ250H into the 250cc GP victory circle today in the AFM's first race at baguna Seca since 1974. Chung and his 1981-vintage Power Valver weren't favored in the beginning, however. Glen Shopher (ND/Shoei/Farmhouae Rest. Yam TZ25O) and Dave Garoutte (DKG/Yam TZ250) led the field for three laps followed by Chung, Keith Day, Gordy Hedemark, Fred Merkel, Bill Mull!,ns, Bob Lugliani and Bob Runyon, all on Yamaha TZ2501. . On the founh lap, the race officials were deciding whether or not to disqualify Shopher for exceeding the strict Laguna noise limiu. Meanwhile, cannon salvas from nearby Fon Ord could be clearly heard over the 105 db exhaust chamben. Back on the traclr., Garoutte slid off his mount in the Corlr.screw. "Got a little crazy -coming out of the comer, that's all," said the frame manufacturer. Shopber also crashed on the same lap, four turns later when he grabbed too much front brake for the tum nine hairpin and washed out. The surviving trio held their positions_ until the finish of the race. Lee Fleming (Champion Kawaaalti GPz550) showed uJl at this non-poinu race with something different, an I.H.I. turbo mounted on the racebilr.e. He then did something else different and entered the cycle in the Open Supentreet race. To everyone's surprise, Lee finished third overall, second in the Open c1au. Only Darrell White (Suz GT750) and Scott Gray (Suz GSll00) fmished ahead of him; Fleming had beaten two 650., 197501, six 9001 and three 10001 with his turbo 550. "It's Shelby Thompson's bilr.e. It is iu fint time out, and I feel it can get faster yet," commented Fleming. "Fuel consumption's a little high, though," he smiled. Thompson said that the boost was Jr.epclow (about nine pounds) and the engine cooled with fuel instead of water. He abo stated that the turbo is almost identical to the ones mounted on Dauun 280ZXa. 125cc GP provided _ of the c:Jc.st racing of the day. Jeff Legitt, riding his four-year-old, air-cooled Honda MTI25R, took the lead at the lall turn to talte victory from the grasp of Bob Lugliani (Palo Alto Yam TZI25). "I got a better drive out of the last tum before the finish. The slow going and the traffIC caused some problems," remarked the Vallejo, CA resident. Lee Moselle, p~dent of the Sporu Car Racing AIIociation of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), spoke at the riden' meeting and expressed his satisfaction with the turnout. He promised to work for more race dates at the lush fa<;ilities next year (next race at Laguna will be on September 27. The next AFM Nonh road race will be July 12 at Golden State. The founh annual ND Sparkplug Golden State Series. also concludes on July 12 at GSIR. Results 460 BOX STOCK: 1. Joe EIdno PhiI_ e-1Suzl: 3. Frod ~ IV...... eoo BOX STOCK: 1. 1Suzl: (~; 2. K _ 2.
