By Gary Hunt CAllLSBAD, CA,,JUN£ 7 Suzuki·mounted Kim Douglas destroyed all the boys with her 2·1 score in the 12See Intermedi· ate class at Carlsbad, which was the lite for one of many L.A. Coliseum QJIa1ifien. Kim didn't win eui1y, u he bad to ,battle with Uoyd Tbomu in both mot08. 58 Uoyd came away the victor in the first mota with a beautiful holeshot. Kim stayed clO8e 'the whole mota but never found a good line to get around Thomas who won with only live seconds separating the two at the finish. In the second mota Thomas was again in the lead, but not for long. On the second lap Douglu squeezed by Thomas right before travefmg up the Carlsbad Freeway. Thomas, on a Yama· ha, rode like a wild man trying to catch Kim, but his rear tire began to go flat. Kim never misled a beat and won eali1y. Tbomu, now sliding all over the track with a completely flat tire, held on for second. Thomas bad to Iett1e for second overall and with a 5-5 score. Bob Breadsly got third. Chuck Brenkus on a Full·Floater Suzuki won both mot08 of the %SOcc Intermediates with no problem at all. Chris Grodziclr.i was clO8e to Brenkus in both mot08 but never got within st:rikinK distance and had to take eecond overall John Weis came &om the back of the pack and charged hard all day for third overall. With not many Pros out today. all the claues were combined into one race. Clint Hardick on a %SO Suzuki rode untouched in both mot08 for fint. Ted Brady on a US Yamaha won his race rather ealily. Ray Tether· ton'came from mid'pack and started slowly to catch Brady late in the race, but bad to settle in for second. Open riden Gary Harris and Mike R08e raced clO8e together with R08e winning the fU'St mota by passing Harris towards the enltof the race. Hardick got tbe holeshot again the second time out and was soon 10nR gone. Brady was again leading the USs, David McGhee wu second but bad to slow due to a flapping reservoir on his monoshock. Then Brady's rear tire went flat and Tetherton (Suz) took advantage of the whole situation and went on for the win and the overall. Brady got second overa1l and Mark Meredith took third. R08e and Harris were again battling in the Open class. R08e 'tried to get around Robert Rodgers, but Rodgen didn't give an inch and they both collided and went down. Harris went by the downed riden and took fint, also giving him the overall win. with R08e second. Re.ults 125 lEG: 1. llo¥id W_ NomI; 2. Keith Sao --"lSuzl: 1 Troy lonz IVomI. 210 lEG: 1. Stubby.tand. tall .tOTHGMX By Bang Bang Bobo SAN BERNARDINO, CA,JUNE 7 To some, "Arroyo" may mean "Creek Bed," but to those in the Over The Hill Gang who raced there, "Arroyo" may be a dirty word.' Ninety·p1us ~ tem~ture, a sizzling track WIth uphills and sudden drop·offs, powdery berms and hot uphill hairpins wu a lot to swelter in for some. Stubby Steve (Mai), who seemingly was unaffecte.d by the hot weather, was fint in thr Expen class. In both matt» he won the drag race out of the start gate to the fint tum and led the red and yellow parade wire·to·wire. He' was challenxed only once by Jelly John (Hus) in the second mota when Jelly John worked his way through-traf· fic to pass Jungle Joe (Yam), who had been pressuring Steve, for second place. Steve went on to score I -1 for top brass, Jelly John wu-5-% for second place. and Runover Ron racked up %-4 for third. The Amateur class. always unpre· dictable and m08tly evenly matched, started in the second wave of the same even1 as the upper dass Experts. Gringo Glenn (Yam) may have had an edge on his competiton. having raced Arroyo previously. He took the ho1eshot and led his group start to finish. However, mota two was to see Get·off Gary (Mai) take ~he checkered flag fint. As scoring 'would have it, neither took fint plac.; honon. This went to hard charging Ding Dong Dennis (Yam) who rang up a 5-2 total for the overall win. Corroded Carlos (Mai) went 2-5 for second place. The third place slot was filled by Gringo Glenn (Yam) who was 1-5 at the tally. Hard luck on a hot day gave Get-off Gary a 7-1 forfourth. Once again in a display of consistency and improved riding, Buggs Bill (Yam) easily won fint place in the In· termediate class. Holding up his index finger after each mota, Buggsy meant he was "numero uno." The scorekeepen confirmed his claim. giving him a I -I for fint overall. Second place went to Chew·it Chuck (Yam). a recent graduate of the Novice dasa. Chuck was also consistent in that he was second into.the first tum in both mot08 behind Jalapeno J08e (Suz). He held second place throughout both mot08 to score a %-%. Jalapeno Jose rode a hot race to garner a '-5 score for third . The Novice class wu won by Toad Tom (Yam), scoring %.% (is consistency the thing?) for fint place. Beep Beep Bob (Mai) won the race to tfie tint tum in both mot08 but was able to hold his position only in mota one to total 1-5 for second place. The spoiler for Bob was Nee-hi Norm who got a slow start in his fint mota but came out strong in mota two to fill third place with his 6- I score. Re.ults EXPERTS: 1. Slubbot S - lMol~ 2. JUNE S Every Friday night there is a consistent group of riders who race on the Dunes mini track. These riders know each other and their abilities and it's not too often that a new rider will come visit this event and walk away with an upRt victory. Well tonight, "King Richard" Saxton from Las Vegas, NV, came and shook up the local riden in the 61cc Modified 9· 11 event. And Glenn Gordy from Beverly Hills knocked off the competition in the 85cc Stock Beginner 12 and' over race. As you may already know, Saxton is a Yamaha factory racer. Why did he make the long trip? The King had to go to the Yamaha factory to pick up a couple of new bikes. So since he had come all of tile way out to SoCal he and his brother David decided that
