hern Neyada· Soathern Callfornla·Arizona·Soathern Neyade, Chambers, Troy Cline Seitzlen , and Brian Benton bests CRC nlghtMX By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA,JUNE 12 The California Racing Club is attracting riders who ordinarily race elsewhere by offering the motocross community a chance to race July 12 at the L.A. Coliseum. Since tonight was a qualifier for the big upcoming event, hund=is decided to race with CRC. Richard Reese entered the 125cc Be· ginner divi, sion three event and made his presence known in the first moto. He cranked his Suzuki into the lead in front of Greg Benton and Major Alford. In the deciding final moto, Reese was in second behind Benton and charging rapidly. But then he boggled and hit the dirt in one Qf the comers. Richard fired his bike up again and got it going. He lost two positions but it didn't take him long before he was second again. If he would have had a few more laps perhaps he could have won but the checkered flag came out and Benton got the win over'Reese and Richie Cole. The top five were Benton, Reese, Cole, Alford and Jon Hall. The 125cc Novice division one class also had a good two man battIe... Perry Hildebrand smoked them in the first mota and this included Rich Truchinski and Andy Ward. The real action was in the second moto. Hildebrand was chasing Mark Woodson around and someone had to give. As it turned out they both gave way when they came to the Dunes' new stadium jump. It is hard to negotiate the tight comer by the tree and Perry and Woodson found this to be so. They went down with only Hildebrand working his way up to a good position, second. Truchin· ski had the lead and he held it straight to the checkered flag and raised his hand up high in the air, happy because he had not only won the moto but the entire event. Overall it was Truchinski, Hildebrand, Mike Inman, Ward and Ben Wyon. Garratt, Arnold frontrunners af redesIgned SaguaroMX TUCSON, AZ,JUNE6 Riders and spectators arriving at Saguaro Raceway Saturday night were surprised and delighted to discover a radically redesigned and inlmitely more chaUenging track confronting them. Nevertheless, undaunted by the raceway restructuring, Super Seer rider Mike Garratt and B&R Suzuki rider Ricky Arnold unleashed their awesome talents to win their respective Pro classes. The first 125cc Pro moto saw Arnold pull the holeshot, followed closely by Ron Watmore (Yam) and Dave Trudeau (Yam). Arnold and Watmore pulled away from the pack as Mike Goodrich (Suz) passed Trudeau for third. The moto ended in that configuration, with Arnold first, Watmore second and Goodrich hanging on for third. In moto two Goodrich, smarting from his finish in the first moto, slipped into the holeshot with Amold and Watmore in tow. Early into the race Watmore fell, and Trudeau grabbed the third position. The remainder of the race was motocross at its wild and wooly best, as Goodrich' and Arnold dueled with telic determination to puU the race out. But it was Goodrich, who expertly used lapped riders to his advantage, finally winning the race. Arnold and Trudeau took second and third, respectively. Overall it was Arnold, Goodrich and l':rudeau. Moto one of the 250cc Pro class began as Mike Garratt leaped into the lead on his Roger McCluskey-tuned Yamaha, trailed by brothers Ron and Rick Watmore (Yam). Ron Watmore passed Garratt quickly, catching him on the downhill V-tum. Garratt closed again and, attempting to cut underneath Watmore on a tum, crashed, allowing Ricky Arnold and Rick Wat· more to grab second and third. Garratt reclaimed the third spot when Rick Watmore stalled negotiating a tight comer. The race ended with Ron Watmore fmt, Arnold second and Garratt in third. Garratt grabbed the holeshot again in moto two, with old nemesis Ron Watmore in second and brother Ri.ck in third. And once again Ron overtook Garratt, this time squeezing past near the end of the lap six straightaway. AU eyes were on them as they broke away from the rest of the pack, creating an insurmountable lead. Then Ron, looking for a double win, encoumered bike problems and was forced to pull out of the race. Garratt took over the fmt position followed, at a distance, by Rick Watmore and Arnold, who, on the final lap, passed Watmore to take second. Garratt took the moto win and fmt'overall, Arnold finished second overall and Ron Watmore, dusty and disgusted, finished third. O'Mara fakes two at AME Indian DunesMX By Laura Richard VALENCIA, CA,JUN 14 7 The winds that whipped up the dust and the heat didn't stop racers from showing up at American Motocross Enterprises Indian Dunes MX. There was nO stopping Team Honda's Johnny O'Mara as he took back to back wins in the'125 and 250cc Pro classes. In the 250cc Pros: O'Mara took charge from the drop of the gate. He was followed by International M/Csponsored Mike Shoemaker (Yam) and Yamaha support rider Tim Locey. Locey aced Shoemak~r for second, with John Whelchel (Yam) fourth. Round two saw O'Mara again lead from gate to flag. Locey and Shoemaker, running 2-5, put up a good fight but there was no catching the fleet Johnny 0'. Locey did capture second over Shoemaker. In the 125cc Pros, O'Mara took another holeshot in the first moto, and rode away to the win, foUowed by Suzuki of Van Nuys' Bill Ouelette and Simi Cycle-sponsored John Langhammer. The second 125cc round saw a bit of a surprise: O'Mara was back in the pack after a bad start. Simi Cycle's Jim Simons had taken the lead with Ouelette and Jim Papper following closely. O'Mara didn't let the bad start bother him and was up front by checkered flag time for his fourth moto win on the day. Overall it was O'Mara, Ouelette and Papper.
