TEN YEARS AGO , Bart Markel set a record that would last over nine years when he chalked up his 28th career AMA Grand National win. At the Charity Newsies half mile in Columbus, OH, Markel and his Harley-Davidson XR750 grabbed the lead at the beginning of the second lap and rode to victory, leading at the finish by almost half a lap. Don Castro (Tri) finished second ahead of Rookie Expert John Hateley (Tri). The man who would tie and then break Markel's record in 1980: Yamaha's Kenny Roberts, finished second in the day's Junior race behind Gary Scott (Tri). The Inter-AMA Mot0CJ'Q55 Series open. ed at Indian Dunes Cycle Park in Valencia, CA, and an American rider almost pulled off ali upset win_ With two of three motos completed, Bultacomounted Tom Rapp led Czechoslovakian CZ rider Vlastimil Valek. However, in the third moto, Rapp's chain was derailed by a broken brake rod and it dropped him to fourth overall. Valek took the win, followed by American resident Gunnar Lindstrom (Hus) and England's Dave Bicken (CZ). In supporting National class action, Lan LanlOn (HUs) was the winner over .Doug Grant (AJS) and Bryn Hokomb (Mai). In the days when horsepower and age were the basis for determining classes in minibike racing, Dave Miller topped Mike Byen in the 15 years and over, oVer seven horsepower class. In the same horsepower bracket for riders 9-11, Jeff Ward placed first ahead of Kelly Moran. In drag racing action at Beech Bend, NY, Boris Murray and his twin-engine Triumph drag bike set both ET '!ond top speed records in the Top Fuel. One run netted him an ET of 8.87 seconds at 174.08 mph. In a later run, Murray upped the speed mark, to 174.75. However, in the final elimination, Murray's chain broke, giving the event win to Larry Welch. Ron Taon, now more well known for his tuning, was the top rider in the day's Junior Eliminator class. George Smith won the Amateur class, and Bernie Schreiber was top lightweight. Steve Foster blasted the 250cc Expert class in an Alviso, CA, scrambles, leading Nick Nazzisi and Rick Hocking across the finish line. In the race, Scott Peanon took his first-ever win by topping the 100cc Novices. Mike Patrick (Yam) was the overall winner of the Los Coyotes D-37 hare scrambles. _ 23
