The gold and the glory long associ· ated with Yamah a and Budweiser, shared the limelig ht with some suprem e exampl es of good sporum an· ship. In the 250cc Interm ediate clalS, bad luck befell Richard Ising long before he even got to the starting line when he was plagued with a bad clutch. Fellow racer Randy Morales came to his resCue. Morales wl!nt home, picked up a spare bike and gave Ising the pans he needed to r.epair the clutch. When Ising and Morales met on the line. Ising's bike fired up and carried him into the lead and right to the winner' s circle. Don Clark came home to second, Scott Boek finished third and Morales, who sacrificed his back·u p bike, took fourth. When the 250cc Pros blasted off into the desert, Team Honda' s Johnny O'Mara led from the start and domina ted his class through out the 50· minute race. Chris Howard challen ged O'Mara from second and John' Whelch el (Yam) took third plus top Yamah a money for the class. Whelch el ended the day with the overall 250cc series win, riding as a private er, and the series was his first experie nce on the 250cc bike. Whelch el, who has a suppor t ride from Yamah a on his 125cc machin e, ended the series wth a fourth in the l25cc Pros. When the l25cc Pros took qn the desert, comple te with streams to forge and heavy brush to clear. Jeff Stanfor d led the way, fighting every inch of the way to hold back the likes of A J. Whitin g, Donnie Hansen and Roger Hensley, a formid able trio that were out for the gold. A.J., true to form, method ically worked his way up to the front and turning his Yamah a loose, quite simply put the other bikes behind as he left a dusty battlefi eld for thewinn er's circle. Hansen came home to a strong second, Hensley held down the numbe r three slot and foUrth place went to Stanfor d. When the big bore Pros broke loose, Bob Schulz piloted his Yamah a off the line and 'Out into the lead. He soon found Mike Shoem aker pursuin g him OYer every inch of the 10·miles of sand, dust, water, mud and more dust. "The Shoe", true to nature, attacke d the turf with a vengeance, pushed Schulz back to second, and proceed ed to take comma nd. Jim Coffey, who had been sidelined with back and leg injuries for a long time, was back in action and smolting! He moved up into third and held off a field of seasoned Pros. Truly, one of the superst ars of the day was Steve Van Duzen, an 80ccExpert racer riding under the colors of Van Nuys Cycle. Runnin g second to Interm ediate Mouse McCoy at the start, a heavy duel went down betwee n these two, both fighting to hold Interm ediate Jeff Barbac ovi, aboard a
