Moose Kennedy, who staned on the 10, took the lead on the start over John Foster and Jeff Tomlin. King immediately went to the cushion and was in the second spot by turn four. Exiting four, the 17 -year-old King around Kennedy and went immediately began building a huge lead. Mike Curoso had also been moving through the pack. getting Foster for third on lap two and taking second from Kennedy in turn four on the third lap. King had built up an unsurmountable lead to record the victory over Curoso and Kennedy. John Sandona ended up fourth followed by Foster and Tomlin. The first three riders all rode Weslakes. Chris Hedge moved ·up from Third Division and came from the 10-yard line to record the victory in the Second Division main. Ron Blanton took the lead on the start over Don Bovee, Andy Northrup and Hedge. Hedge and Northrup bumped in turn two on the opening lap with Northrup going down. Hedge moved by Bovee for second and wrestled the lead from Blanton in turn one on lap four after a half lap, side·by·side battle. Bransford and King clobber Costa Mesa Lance King (top) defeated a strong Scratch field at Costa M .... Danny Becker tries to force his way underneath Gary Ford. By Ken Kellogg COSTA MESA, CA,JUNE 19 Age made no differenc~ to Lance King tonight as the young man dominated the Scratch main event at the Orange County Fail"J{Tounds defeating tbe best scratch rider in history, Mike Bast who could only muster a third. The Third Division main event gave Alan Davidson a chance to win by good riding, not just luck. That IS, not everyone fell down on the second lap. Davidson took the lead and went the distance unchallenged. Bentley Barrett went into second place on the second lap with Jim Bradley challenging. Even more so, he was fightling off Pam Bennett. She just missed third. The Second Division main got off to a slow start. In fact, it was a real bad start with too many riders going down, and it had to be restarted. On the restart, Pat Hawley was in first but Dennis Abbott went under him on tbe third lap and took the lead. Chris Hedge. who has won the last two main events here, moved into third and on the last lap, turn four, he moved into second place. At the same time, another one of the hottest Second Division riders, Rob Pfetzing, moved into third. Hawley took founh. Once again Dennis Bransford took the win in the Handicap main event. Bransford has been improving ery week and is becoming a regular winner at Costa Mesa. He did a fine. job of holding off Jeff Tomlin and Danny B~cker for most of the -race. Tomlin was in third for most 'of the race, but on the last lap, he managed to get under Becker and take second. Believe it or not, taking third for the first time in quite a while was "Berserko" Becker. Could ole number 22 be on the return? It·s very possible. Becker looked good, nearly pulling a wheelie at every turn, yet maintaining complete control of his machine. Finishing fourth was crowd favorite Dave Sims. The Scratch main sevent was a tremendous lineup of speedway heavies -- Lance King, Mike CurOlO, Mike Bast and Bobby McLain. The ract began with all four riders together in turn one. King pulled a slight lead coming out of tum two. Curoso and Bast were next with McLain fourth. Bast seemed to have a little bike trouble on the second lap, and King was able to expand his lead. Curoso was able to clearly take comm'VId of second place and that's how they ended the night -- King, • Curoso, Bast and McLain. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Lanco King; 2. Milto Curooo; 3. Mikellaot; 4.
