(Colltinued from ptJge 27) Holland, Tarantino, Locey take DeAnza $2000 MX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, JUNE 7 Suzuki's George Holland was the fastest, smoothest and most consistent rider to show up for the $2000 purse race at DeAnza • 54 Cycle Park. His performance in the 125cc Pro class was strong enough to give him a virtually uncontested win with Suzuki West rider Gary Denton (Suz) picking up the pieces for second place over Dale's Modern Cycles rider Scott Manning (Yarn). From the start of moto one, Holland was unstoppable. He took the holeshot and quicltly began to pull away. Rick Rodgers of Riverside Suzuki was second through the early laps with Rodney Brand and his Desert Suzuki in third. Denton started off just ahead of Manning, somewhere around the number six spot, but both riden were soon working forward. On the seventh lap Denton passed Rodgen for second, but by that time Holland topped Denton, Manning, Rodgen and Brand. While Holland again pulled away at the start of round two, Denton, Manning and Brand had already choeen their finishing positions, riding in second, third and fourth, respec' tively. Dean Cates (Suz) was futh through the first half of the moto, then he dropped out, giving the position to Roger Hensley (Suz). In the remaining laps, Holland's lead stabilized and there were no changes in the top five. Jim Tarantino (DG Hon) might have won the 250cc Pro clasa just as convincingly if not for O'Neal's Andrew Jefferson (Suz). Tarantino jumped into an early fint moto lead with Craig Gormley (Yam) in second over Jefferson. Jefferson managed to pass Gormley and then he and Tarantino began to pull away from the pack. Manning soon moved into the third spot, but he was several seconds behind Jefferson. After the halfway mark, the space between the top riders didn't change much, but at the start of the. white flag lap, Tarantino blew it. He went down and stalled his bike in a tum, allowing Jeffenon to get by and into the lead. Jeffenon went on to win the race with Tarantino second over Manning. Tarrantino and Jeffenon were at it again in the next round. Marty Miller (Yam) held the third position until Manning took over. Then Mike Shoemaker (Yam) passed both Miller and Manning. Manning then dropped his pace with a flat tire while Gormley came up to challenge Miller for fourth. In the meantime Tarantino was edging away slightly from Jeffenon. A small lead then began to grow to a great one when Jeffenon's silencer fell off, slowing him down noticeably. At the end, Tarantino was safely in front with Jeffenon still ahead of Shoemaker, Gormley and Don Griewe (Mai). The fint Open class moto was owned by Greg Zitterkopf of Advanced Cycle. David Williams (Mai) took the holeshot but Zitterkopf got by on the second lap and was never challenged on his way to the checkered flag. Andy Jeffenon started in the middle of the pack, but slowly moved up until he was in third on lap four. Two laps later he was in second. Tim Locey (Yarn) had started right behind Jefferson and moved up with him. Once Jeffenon was firmly situated in second, Locey made his move and passed the Suzuki rider. At the finish line, Zitterkopf was still on top with Locey second, Jeffenon third, Micky Dymond (Yarn) fourth and Don Griewe (Hus) futh. Zitterkopfs luck took a tum for the worse in the second tum of the second moto. He went down in a pile up and was nearly last in getting restarted. The lead was in the hands of Tracy Oswell (Mai) for most of the race. But as the 12th lap rolled around in the 15lapper, Oswell dropped back to fourth and Locey took over. Zitterkopf had moved all the way up to second, but Locey, was strongly in front and the order was set for the finish. Oswell managed to repass Jeffenon to show up third at the line. Overall it was Locey, Zitterkopf, Jeffenon, Oswell and Scott Cavness (Suz). Results PEE WEE: 1, T.- Hohn (Yom!: 2. R _ GerIghly lHanI, JR evc: 1, Chrio Noch (Yoml: 2. AIIon Brohm (Yonll: 3.
