MInIs swarm at IRA Arroyo MX By Terry Rezek SAN BERNARDINO, CA,JUNE 7 SCott BumwoI1h took the CMC Seddlebeck 2I5Occ Pros. Drury, Holley ma.terAME moonlight MX By Laure Richard VALENCIA, CA, MAY 29 It was quite a night of racing at Indian Dunes, .hosted by American Motocross Enterprises. The fint Pro race off the line was the 1251, with Simi Cycle Yamahamounted John Drury fint to the first tum. Fellow Simi Cycle rider Jim Simons (Suz) was in hot punuit of Drury, and International Yamaha's' Steve Schmiu held third. Schmiu later took Simons for second, but there was no way Drury was going to give up the lead. Round two saw Simons taking the checkered fint with Drury a safe second over Cycle Products West Suzuki rider Perry Cendro. Drury was the overall winner with Simons second. Cendro's 5-5 placed him third. When the 250cc Pros blasted off the line for their first moto, Bob Kline and his Dick Allen/Kal-Gard Yamaha assumed the point position, with Yamaha's Jim Holley and O'Neal Suzuki rider Ken Zahrt running 2·5. Holley pressured Kline for a shot at the lead, but Kline held him off and took the first moto win. Kline pulled a repeat holeshot in the second round with Holley again right on his tail. Holley again kept the pressure on and this time he was succesBful, passing Kline and taking the overall win. Third in the standings went to Kolbe Can-Am pilot Steve Rawson and his 5-4 tally. It was back to back wins in the Open Pro class for Foothill Yamaha's Joe Root as he led holeshot to checkered flag in both motos. Second went to O'Neal Yamaha rider Doug Lawrence and third was taken by Rob Martindale (Phil's Cycle Shop Mai). Re.ults 1211 PlIO: 1. John Drwy lV....; 2. Jim Simano lSuzl; Some of the Pros who normally dominate the Arroyo track were absent today but the racing was still as hot as the temperature. The Minis were out in force, probably sharpening up for the NMA qualifier which was to be held at the Arroyo facility June 14. The Over the Hill Gang also had a good turnout, proving once again that it is still poesible to have a good time while you're racing. Things really started buzzing when the second race of the day got underway. This was the 80cc Stock Beginners and all the 60s. When these track termites began swarming, you knew that the future of racing was in good hands - small but goodl The fastest of those small hands belonged to John Howell, riding a Rustan's Yamaha. Ahout 10 seconds after the stan, the other 60s knew that trying to catch Howell would.be like picking up watermelon seeds with soapy hands. He squined to the lead of the 60s in both motos and slipped past about half of the earlier staning 80s by moto end. Of those 80s, John Hastings made an early bid for the lead by shooting out of the middle of the pack to get through the fint turn first. He was only able to maintain that lead for one lap before Steven Gamble elbowed his way to the lead and, once there, would not relinquish it to the repeatedly attacking Hastings. Moto one finished with Gamble in first, Hastings second and Jason Coolbaugh in third. Moto two had a new contender for fastest off the line as Kenny Collier hit the top of the staning hill first, but by the time the pack hit the scoring area about 500 meters later, Coolbough was in the lead and looking for air. Gamble got a mediocre stan and had to work to get second by the end of lap one. That was not good enough and by the end of lap two, Gamble was in first to stay. Hastings worked his way to third by moto's end to get second overall for the day behind Gamble. The BOcc parade continued into the next event. The two Expert/Pro riders showed why they had that c1a8ification when Jason Rincon put his super quick Kawasaki first off the start and Larry Brooks used his great natural talent and his CRF Yamaha to fight past Rincon and streak in for the win. Intermediate Jason Prater was clearly looking for a higher cla.-mation in t ArI M the Pros to take fint in his class for this moto. Moto two was Brooks' ball game; he led from gate to flag, looking back only occasionally to be sure there was still someone on the track with him. There were plenty of people back in second. Bill Surratt was there right off the line and through the first complete lap when Prater moved up to take second away from him and hold that position to the end. Rincon came in on lap three to hold third briefly but Surrat got back in there to finish the moto in third behind Brooks and Prater. Only slightly funher back, Novice Roger Ebling rode another Rincon Kawasaki to two moto wins to take first in that class. The next event pitted the Open and 250cc Intermediates. Mark Anderson (La Habra Yam) grabbed an early lead and held it to the halfway point. Mark Johnson (Southland Suz) dove under Anderson and came up for air in the lead. Anderson tried mIghtily to get it back, but ran out of moto. When the gate dropped for moto two, Anderson snatched the lead immediately. From the fint tum to the checkered flag, Anderson managed to stay just a tire's breath ahead of Johnson. With a better finish in the second moto, Anderson took the overall. Joe &ymoDd the 1251. t C..I I Dymond led Burnworth for several laps in moto one of the Open Pros but it was just in time that Burnworth would begin to pull the field. By lap seven Bumwonh had a stable lead and Marino was only one bike from Dymond for second. Bumwonh won for a moment but his disqualification gave the win to Dymond with Marino second and Maico-mounted Dale Lewis third. In moto two Bumwonh was unable to compete so the dueling was between Marino and Dymond for the overall. Marino took the lead right off the gate and led for 14 laps. No rider could get close, 10 Marino'. 2-1 score was good .enough for the overall with Dymond (1-2) placing second. Lewis (5-5) was third. The 250cc Pro division was all Burnworth, though DG Hondamounted Jim Tarantino gave Bumwonh a slight run for his money. In moto one Bumwonh took charge of the the 14-lap event, mounting up a 14-second lead over Tarantino by lap 10. Tim Lunde (Yam) held onto third with Norman Nilsson (Yam) and Ted Hoyt (Yam) trying desperately to gain a position. The moto ended with no really drastic position changes. Burnworth won easily with Tarantino second over Lunde, Nilsson and Hoyt. In moto two Bumwonh turned in another impressive ride to give him the points for the overall. Tarantino again pushed Burnworth the entire moto but to no avail. Tarantino finished second overall with Lunde, Hoyt and Nilsson making up the top five overall. Micky Dymond has the Saddleback track pretty well wired. His double wins in the U5cc Pro class awarded him the overall honon. Moto one had some position swapping in the early laps. Dymond took the lead on lap two after the early leader, Jon Faure (Hon) bailed with a good lead. Vince McMahan (Kaw) shot by Rubin Torres (Suz) on lap four for second place and these two riden pecked at each other for the entire race. Bob Green (Suz) made a mad charge for some points after a last place stan, moving his way up to finish founh. Dymond won easily with McMahan second then Torres and Green. Dymond did it again in moto two which gave him the overall. A good ride for Torres over McMahan gave him second overall after switching positions the entire race. McMahan was third overall with Green fourth. Results tIllcc JR: 1. J. _ lVoml; 2. M. _lVoml. MINI JR: 1. K. SlrendlVoml; 2. W. Bone; 3. T. _ lVoml. MINIINT: 1. R. _1K8wl; 2. D. _ lVoml; 3. M.
