Starting back in '76 with the "Chuck Schmidt Memorial," " , !. 58 it has been run consistendy and smoothly as the "1000" ever since under the able direction of the Roadrunnen Motorcycle Association of Wichita Falls with thousanda of miles and houn just planning the event each year. Stepped in the tradition of the "annual Ancell Ranch Run" which "took place" here for over 12 yean in the 19501 and early '60s when Harle,. and Indians ran through the over 14,000 acres on a "secret time" finish, the Texas 1000 does the same except is hold enough to carve out a big hunk of the entire state of Taas and still finish on a secret time. At 12:01 a.m. May 25. 252 riden lined up at Lake Belton in south Taas for the stan on the biggest Hondas. Harle,., Suzukis, Yamahas. BMWs and all branda you ever saw with the moat sophisticated trailen and campen tagging along behind induding one sponing a Coon cooler with the Texas license plate for a tailgate. the biggest litde trail house in Taas. From there they headed south to Pon Comfon on the Gulf Coast and then nonh to Lake Sam Raburn over in east Tau for a mandatory six-hour rest. Nat was New Boston for a final on-the-road check point before the final point at Lucy Park in Wichita Falls staning at noon on May 24. when riden staned drifting into the final checkpoint from storm-filled east Taas skies that marked the previous evening. When the final Sunday evening deadline sounded. over 200 managed to make the finish check and were met by free Coon and Coke to relax in the beautiful Texas park llCeDe and bed down for the night in Lucy Park. Roadrunnen officials headed by President Dick Sipes and safety officer Steve Willits then had their handa full soning out the results throughout another stonny night.
