CA, MAY 51 The Din Diggers M.C., whose members include some of the more recognizable names in southern California motorcycle- 42 dom, brought together lOme more great names on the last day of May. Aleot Park was the lite of the gathering of IUch names as Indian, Matchle11,' Ariel, and Gold Star. as well as a holt of "Old Timen" to ride them. The beautiful spring day brou![ht out the Iilr.es of Keith Mashburn, MIke Haney, Clyde Earl. and Walt Foster to match lap' with a couple of hundred current Pro riden, "retired" Pro' riden, desert riden. motocrmaen, speedway guys. and just about any other claa of two wheeled competiton imaginable, When the cbeclr.ered nag fell, however. the big money winner in the 500cc Pro clua was current Pro Novice bouhoe Pete Hames. Hames took all three motoa in the class aboard his Yamaha thumper, even though in one race he crashed hard enough to bring out tbe restart flag and the ambulance. Recently un-retired Don Grigsby chased the Simi Valley rider all the way to gather up second place overall ahead of John Sperry and Jay Lewis. Another Pro Novice. Bud Carroll, riding a 500 for the fint time ever, topped Walt Foster and Sparky Edmonston in the 500cc Expen go. Local sportsman rider John Perez held back fonner Pro rider Dean Sykes, Jeff Johnson. and Ken Greene to take home the 500cc Amateur gold. The 500cc Novices ran what seemed like a whole day's wonh of racing themselves due to their large numbers, with Honda-mounted David Urquhan emerging as king of the hill over John Noonwonhy and Shawn Hughes. Woody Lindsay, Yamaha powered. bested the Open Single Novice class riden with Dennis Pinhero picking up second place over Mitch Shook. "TBone" Grigsby took the Open Twin class over talent Iilr.e Mike Haney, who was aboard his Houston IT Nationalwinni~ Triumph. Stylish Larry Bird, also Tnumph-mounted. finished third ahead of fellow District 57 rider Ron Bell. Bell and Grigsby were both riding Yamaha twins. Open Single Amateur/Expen gold went to Haney's "IT 580" ahead of Bird and Jon Clark on a day that saw many riden doing double duty. racing two (sometimes more) claaaea. In small bore action , Terry Singleton dusted off his 175 Honda to t ••r . Ne"•••••••t.er. C.III.rnl.·ArI•• take the win ID the 200cc class. Singleton's domination left Tom Holmes and Lost Angels M.C.'s Larry Blum to fight over second with Holmes getting the spot. The 250cc Novices went round and round with Paul Clipper gettinS the nod over Guy Duckett. Nonhern California was well represented in the 550cc class, as fint. second, and fifth place riden were all from over the Grapevine. Errol Longboya's Honda emerged on top: followed by Brent Videgler and Jim Chapman. Jimmy Cooke and Lynn George ftIled in the top five. Keith Mashburn, who was the fint rider to ever post a win on the thennew Yamaha 650cc venical twin about 10 yean ago. borrowed Jimmy Cooke's Honda to win the 250cc Amateur/Expen class. John Rudder rode the final moto with a flat rear tire to finish founh and pick up second overall. with Jim Kesler third and fint Amateur. The Vintage races were a sight to see (and so were some of the vintage riden) , with hand shiften, rigid frames. and 4O-year old Firestone tires scattered throughout the field. Rick Zimmennan powered his H-D Sporuter to the Early Vintage class win, hand-grooved 16-inch automobile tire and all. Don Browning and Robert Tryon rounded out the top three. The "Late Vintage" (huh?) class went to Bob Bell's Triumph, but only after a protest of his frame was disallowed. Jack Hateley-sponsored Demo picked up second place over Bob Whitcher and Dave Strohman. The ever popular sidehacks showed up in large numben, with the lowslung rig of Loreto Masella/Jim Hanneman coming from behind to take the checlr.en over the desen-type hack of Bob Hicks and Ron Seydel. Crazy guys Jim Shennan and Kevin Becksted Honda-ed their way into third overall. with Ken and Dale Jorddan finishing founh. 1 hope that about coven everybody. in an event which gets bigger and better each year. Hopefully the Dinosaun will reappear at Ascot next year. as track preparation was good and the races ran off very smoothly. Despite numberous get-offs. the ambulance only made one run for a reponed broken ann as just about everyone went home happy. The long day of racing made for a few "siezedup" forearms and some tail draggio, but nothing a Coon or two wouldn't cure. j.C. Agajanian will host a "Four Stroke Only" race of his own on Friday night. June 19th. so if you would like to hear the beautiful sound of no ringdings. be there. All riden and claaaea will be welcome.
