- c.a .._ - ............... _ Moon, the referee, said they could have URd 12. Through all this, promoter Harry Oxley managed to put on a superb mow at the Orange "County Fairgrounds. There were the usual lIpilll and thrilIa, but an even better show went on - the Scratch main matched rivals Mike Bast and Alan Chriatian. In the Third Division main, the whole race belonged to zero-yard line riden. Guy Ermolenko was first into tum one and opened up his lead every 'lap 10 that by the end of the race, he was at least 10 bike lengths in front. Second place and finishing the race with a wheelie (which may cost him more than he earned for the night) was 1246. Third was John Gant and fourth went to Dave Wooten. The Division Two main event had Rick Miller take the gate shot and in tum one was all alone in first place but not for long. On the second lap, Ron Blanton took the lead and soon Miller was in fifth place. However, Miller did manage to work his way back into second place. On the last lap and in the last tum, Chris Hedge, who had been slowly working his way through traffic, pUled both Miller and Blanton and stole the win. Blanton finished second and Miller third. The First Division Handicap main seemed fairly predictable. As figured, hoth the favorites - Shawn Moran and Lance King - got off to great starts. But so did Dennis Bransford. Bransford didn't know that he was supposed to loee; he was first into tum one with Moran right on his tail. Third was Steve Lucero with King fourth. Kun Strommer and Sterling Cogar went down together and both were out of the race. On the third lap, Moran moved into first putting a hard charging Bransford into second. Both Steve Lucero and King were breathing down Bransford's neck. Dennis was able to hold them off and at the finish it was Moran, Bransford, King and Lucero. E"ven with all the restarts and crashes, the Scratch Main event was very doee to being run at the usual time. This was due to lOme fantastic hustling by the pit steward, the Anaheim High Siden M.C..and all,the other track crew. The match up for the big banana was Mike Bast, Alan Christian, Jeff Tomlin and Bobby McLain. Bast was first into tum one but Christian was a doee second and on lap two Alan went under Mike and was about an inch into flnt place. But this lead wasn't to last too long. On the next lap, Bast regained the lead with about the same distance Christian had over him. Riding in his first Scratch main, Tomlin was doing his best to keep up with these heavyweights. Going into tum one, Bast was still in flJ'St place. Again, Christian made a bid for first. This time, however, he hit Bast's bike, and the bikes locked up taking both riders out of the race. Tomlin had to lay it down in order to avoid making tire tracks on either Christian or Bast. Alan got right back up and on his bike and finUhed the race to take what he hoped was the win. Irwin Moon declared the race was over but backed up one lap and that Christian was disqualified for causing the crash. So the finishing order was Bast, Tomlin, McLain and Christian. • ..... 00 .....
