GARDENA. CA, MAY 51
The Din Diggers M.C., whose
members include some of the
more recognizable names in
southern California motorcycle-
42
dom, brought together lOme more
great names on the last day of May.
Aleot Park was the lite of the gathering of IUch names as Indian, Matchle11,' Ariel, and Gold Star. as well as a
holt of "Old Timen" to ride them.
The beautiful spring day brou![ht
out the Iilr.es of Keith Mashburn, MIke
Haney, Clyde Earl. and Walt Foster to
match lap' with a couple of hundred
current Pro riden, "retired" Pro'
riden, desert riden. motocrmaen,
speedway guys. and just about any
other claa of two wheeled competiton
imaginable,
When the cbeclr.ered nag fell,
however. the big money winner in the
500cc Pro clua was current Pro Novice
bouhoe Pete Hames. Hames took all
three motoa in the class aboard his
Yamaha thumper, even though in one
race he crashed hard enough to bring
out tbe restart flag and the
ambulance. Recently un-retired Don
Grigsby chased the Simi Valley rider
all the way to gather up second place
overall ahead of John Sperry and Jay
Lewis.
Another Pro Novice. Bud Carroll,
riding a 500 for the fint time ever,
topped Walt Foster and Sparky
Edmonston in the 500cc Expen go.
Local sportsman rider John Perez held
back fonner Pro rider Dean Sykes, Jeff
Johnson. and Ken Greene to take
home the 500cc Amateur gold. The
500cc Novices ran what seemed like a
whole day's wonh of racing themselves
due to their large numbers, with
Honda-mounted David
Urquhan
emerging as king of the hill over John
Noonwonhy and Shawn Hughes.
Woody Lindsay, Yamaha powered.
bested the Open Single Novice class
riden with Dennis Pinhero picking up
second place over Mitch Shook. "TBone" Grigsby took the Open Twin
class over talent Iilr.e Mike Haney, who
was aboard his Houston IT Nationalwinni~ Triumph. Stylish Larry Bird,
also Tnumph-mounted. finished third
ahead of fellow District 57 rider Ron
Bell. Bell and Grigsby were both
riding Yamaha twins. Open Single
Amateur/Expen gold went to Haney's
"IT 580" ahead of Bird and Jon Clark
on a day that saw many riden doing
double duty. racing two (sometimes
more) claaaea.
In small bore action , Terry
Singleton dusted off his 175 Honda to
t ••r . Ne"•••••••t.er. C.III.rnl.·ArI••
take the win ID the 200cc class.
Singleton's domination left Tom
Holmes and Lost Angels M.C.'s Larry
Blum to fight over second with Holmes
getting the spot. The 250cc Novices
went round and round with Paul
Clipper gettinS the nod over Guy
Duckett. Nonhern California was well
represented in the 550cc class, as fint.
second, and fifth place riden were all
from over the Grapevine. Errol
Longboya's Honda emerged on top:
followed by Brent Videgler and Jim
Chapman. Jimmy Cooke and Lynn
George ftIled in the top five.
Keith Mashburn, who was the fint
rider to ever post a win on the thennew Yamaha 650cc venical twin about
10 yean ago. borrowed Jimmy Cooke's
Honda
to
win
the
250cc
Amateur/Expen class. John Rudder
rode the final moto with a flat rear tire
to finish founh and pick up second
overall. with Jim Kesler third and fint
Amateur.
The Vintage races were a sight to
see (and so were some of the vintage
riden) , with hand shiften, rigid
frames. and 4O-year old Firestone tires
scattered throughout the field. Rick
Zimmennan
powered
his
H-D
Sporuter to the Early Vintage class
win,
hand-grooved
16-inch
automobile tire and all.
Don
Browning and Robert Tryon rounded
out the top three. The "Late Vintage"
(huh?) class went to Bob Bell's
Triumph, but only after a protest of
his frame was disallowed. Jack
Hateley-sponsored Demo picked up
second place over Bob Whitcher and
Dave Strohman.
The ever popular sidehacks showed
up in large numben, with the lowslung rig of Loreto Masella/Jim
Hanneman coming from behind to
take the checlr.en over the desen-type
hack of Bob Hicks and Ron Seydel.
Crazy guys Jim Shennan and Kevin
Becksted Honda-ed their way into
third overall. with Ken and Dale
Jorddan finishing founh.
1 hope that about coven everybody.
in an event which gets bigger and
better each year. Hopefully the
Dinosaun will reappear at Ascot next
year. as track preparation was good
and the races ran off very smoothly.
Despite numberous get-offs. the
ambulance only made one run for a
reponed broken ann as just about
everyone went home happy. The long
day of racing made for a few "siezedup" forearms and some tail draggio,
but nothing a Coon or two wouldn't
cure.
j.C. Agajanian will host a "Four
Stroke Only" race of his own on Friday
night. June 19th. so if you would like
to hear the beautiful sound of no ringdings. be there. All riden and claaaea
will be welcome.
