co ~ ...... Six-pack ....ht for Cantaloupl at SactoMX By "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, MAY 22 Temperatures during the day were in the upper 80s so Team Yamaha's Donnie Cantaloupi of Stockton decided to have himself a six·pack, 'Loupi stylel He brought three Yamahas, one for each class, to Sacramento Raceway's night motocrtlllll and won six, count 'em, six motos, two for each class. Sue Wood and Debbie Jamerson continued their Powder Puff Expert battles with Sue coming out on top this time. Debbie won the first moto with Sue right behind. Debbie was again in front in moto two, but Sue went WFO for the win and overall Now that Sue has re-entered the berm-bashing businesa on a 125 Yamaha, she and Debbie have had lOIDe well fought moto battles. These two fox·o-croesen also race in the 125cc Novice c1asa and regu1ar1y deflate young moto-macho egos. Dawnita Farris put another Yamaha in first in the Powder Puffs, but Melodye Alicea gassed her Kawasaki in for sec· ond overall. Jay Cook won the 125cc Novice first moto but found himself in second behind Tim Copeland on the last lap of the second moto. Cook tried des· perately to stick a wheel underneath Copeland as the two - you guessed it - Yamahas headed toward the checkered. After a few. unsuccessful attempts, Cook clutched his one-two·fiver out of a right-bander, jumped a berm and flew right by for the win and overall. Copeland was sec;ond overall with Bernie Franza's Kaw-pie third and Jeff Whit on a Mugen fourth overall. Ed Minton holeshot the fU'St 125cc Pro race, but by the end of lap one, Cantaloupi had moved his Yamaha from fifth to second and was pressuring. 'Loupi finally got by on the last lap for the win with Minton, Dave Weatherbee and Chuck Aksland following. Aksland and Minto led early in the second moto, but Donnie was soon by for the win and the overall. Abland was second for a third overall and Minton third for second overall. Cantaloupi got out front of the first 250cc Pro moto from the stan. Dave Wood was moving up from fifth with Jimmy Robertson right behind him. Dave was soon into second with Robertson third. But Jimmy has been real hot at Sacramento Raceway recently and zapped a petrified Wood to take second behind Cantaloupi. Wood was third with Aksland founh. Aksland shot out in front of the second moto, but Cantaloupi soon took over the lead and held it to the checkered. Aksland finished second after a brief challenge by Randy Chapman's Maico. Chapman finished third. Cantaloupi won both Open motos without much problem. Lee Miller and Tim Phillips traded 2-5 finishes in each moto with Miller's 5-2 score taking second overaJl to Phillips' 2·5. Aston, Cantaloupl double at ZAP NMA qualifier By Bill Spencer BRENTWOOD, CA, MAY 24 Combining a National Motosport Association qualifier with a big time CMC Pro motocross using two race tracks with the same staning gates may have sounded difficult but worked, despite not getting the turnout that the promoters thought they would on the Memorial Day weekend at Sand Hill Ranch. A very warm and dry day was made even more difficult when local water trucks went belly up, and promoter Larry Kleist had to rent extras at a very cOllt1y pan of the promotions. Raang wile, it was still great with mini flashes Tim Aston, Tyson Vohland and Chris Plain doing most of the winDing while Team Yamaha's Donnie Cantaioupi rode three Pro cluaa, taking the two big·bores and dropping out of the125s with gearbox problema. Tim Aston did the double deed in 80cc Expert Stock with Tyson Vohland unable to get off the comers with his stock YZ. Shawn Wooten took Intermediate 9-11 with Chris Plain the winner in the Intermediate 12-16 catagory. Gene Kay won the 9·11 80cc class with Obie Leff in for his double win in the 60cc Novice 9-11 group over Jamie Wooten. Tim Aston was again the Expert winner over Tyson Vohland (both Yamaha suppan riders). Chris Plain took the l00cc Stock win on his Oalt1and Yamaha YZ while Tyson Vohland was the 105cc catagory winner over Tyrome Earl and John Garcia in the combined classes. The 125cc Proe were the first of the big guys out on their own race track with Don Cantaloupi the no nonsense winner of the opener over Paul Duchscher and Mike Whalen. In the second moto, Team Yamaha's Cantaloupi was long gone after some fine work with Rick Ryan when the YZ125 got pushed in with some inter· nal gearbox problems. Ryan, Moto·X Fox/Champion Yamaha rider, had been riding in front and along with Don for enough laps that he was long gone for that moto win, but it was a long count for the overall. Seaside MotorSpon Center's Paul Duchscher took the big bucks with a 25 on his Yamaha. second going to East Bay Yamaha's Troy DeHerrera with a 6-2 and third to Mike Holmes on the South Bay Suzuki with a 4-4. Whalen , wa in for founh with a 5-6 and Ryan's 9-1 count got ftfth. The first round of 250cc Pro was a bump· and-run special with Cantaloupi coming from the back to third while Rick Ryan continued to amaze the troops. The not quite 15· year-old speedster was a big time Mini Whiz kid nearly 10 years ago along· side Jim Filice, Randy Mamola, Doug Cbandler and Chris Carr. Those other guys went the flat track way and this kid is looking very much like the same caliher competitor, already a seasoned veteran with a IUppon Yamaha ride and Moto-X Fox backing, along with Champion Yamaha of San JOR. Ryan won the first moto with a fifth in the second round for the second overall. Cantaloupi won the second round and overall but was under a lot of Pl'ellll\lre from Yamaha of Palo Alto rider Shawn McConn, not quite up to snuff with a bout with the flu. McConn held on for the third with a 6· 2 count over Chris Grewer on the East Bay Honda at 5-5 and Troy DeHerrera, a fifth at 4·4. The Open Pro show was a no contest affair for Cantaloupi who was obviously using today's races as a good way to keep in shape when the Nationals aren't running. It was the big pair of ones for the likeable former mini racer with Chris Grewer back in form with two twos on the new CR450R and Donnie Hawkins in for third on the Palo Alto Yamaha. Preston, Woslck, Heiberger haul at ArgyleMX By "Nuclear" Neukam DIXON, CA, MAY 17 "Anybody can close their eyes." was Mike Preston's modest way of accepting congratulations for winning the 125cc Expert class at a dust-plagued Argyle Cycle Park. It's always windy at Dixon and this was no exception. The wind dries the track as ~ fast as the water truck can wet it wlule the only water that stays collecu in various holes, creates ponds ana breeds "dust-o-sloehl" Mike Johnson was out in front of the first 12Sec Expen moto for about twothirds of a lap but hit neutral coming out of a right-hander, and Rodney Smith slipped his Yamaha by. Smith staned pulling a small lead as Team Moto-X Fox Suzuki rider Mike Preston was up to third behind John· son after about a 10th'place start. Preston quickly took second as Don Nelson moved into third. Preston had closed in on Smith by the last lap and flew by to talte the win. Smith was second fonowed a ways back by Nelson, Ricky Ryan, Troy DeHerrera and Larry Coleman. Wayne Martin took a nasty spill as he landed off the jump in front of the (not so) grandstands and broke his collarbone. Everyone hopes he'll be okay as the wound looked pretty nasty. Good luck Wayne. The second moto was shonened to five laps (from seven) and Preston was victorious in the moto. and for the overall. Allen Si1haneIt was second and, combined with a first moto ninth, was fourth overall. DeHerrera was third for the same overall, Jimmy Robenson founh and Smith fifth for second overall. Due to an extended delay while wait· ing for the ambulance, the 250cc and
