OPEN STOCK: 1. _~ IHonl; 2. 0-. ~ lHanI;3. _a-lHonI. - 8e#er, Maloney, 00 0') Lewis best CMC Saddleback MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, MAY 17 With many other tracks in southem California holding large purse events, the turnout for the regular Continental Moto-sponS SaaHeld takes a wild one at Speedway JJ 7 CMCMX By Rod Eschenburg CHULA VISTA, CA, MAY 20 With most of the Pros "saving it up" for the Continental Motosports Club point race at Ascot on the following night, the "big- 44 gie" of the night at Speedway 117's Coke/KPRI Stadium Cross weekly go was the as-usual gigantic 125cc Junior class where fmt-year rider Mark Saal· feld (Yam) parlayed a wild came-from· behind 1·2 effort to victory. Saalfeld, who has impressed us with victories at Carlsbad this year, roared from behind to a first moto victory over Yamaha·mounted Greg Garsica in a lat~·lap mid·air pass, and tben came up with a hard fought second in the IeCOnd round for the overall. Point leader, Suzuki of Lemon Grove rider Chria Shaw, saI~ a wild second overall with a 7·1 effort. Third was a tie·breaker for Keith Craig at 6·4 over Roxer Saem at 5-71 In the Pros, the big claas was the 1255 with Kawasaki Motor Corp. rider Curt McCuistion going two for two over very stubborn San Diego Suzuki rider Scott Meyer. After an easy first moto victory, McCuistion, was reallyextend· ed in the second round as Meyer ap· peared to have everything in hand until one slixht bobble gave Curt an opportunity he quickly capitalized on. Run concurrently were the 250cc PI'OII, and the IeCOnd moto was also the cliffhanger as Escondido Honda·mounted Brian Maloney squeaked out a close one over Woody Carlson (Yam). We say close becaUle after a dismal third in the first moto, Carlson came back for a runaway second effort, with Maloney having a tough time with Ron Hume who was inches behind every lap. Had HUIDe been able to move by, it would have been Carlson in a three-way tie-brealter. We may have been down on two-wheelers but the three-wheelers more than made up for it as there were record or near record fields in every class. Biggest class once again was the Open Stock where Honda factory rider Mark "Waxey" Weixeldorfer aced out teammate "Dyno Dean" Sundahl for the second straight weelr. with Mike Chester a close third. Sundahl came back, however. for a big win in the Open Modified! as Mike Cae had a tie· breaker second over Weixeldorfer. Big winner of the night was the Smitty's ATC and Dickson Design rider Tom Gaian who went four for four in sweep. ing both the 115cc and 140cc Modified!. Popping back to the two·wheelers, Mini Junior rider Cory Falter saw his 10·straight victory string (two more at Barona last Sunday) come to an end as he was downed two straight by Jeff McCoy. McCoy was coming off two straight at Barona where he is an Intermediate rider. Looks like both will again be rivals in our Summer Series at 117 as they both will be CMC Inter· mqiiates, too. And finally, John Canney. who has secured a ride with Premier Yamaha, scored his second straight Junior Cycle win (counting Barona) over Tommy Clowers, plus continuing with his Mini Intermediate victory string. The Saddleback track was changed a little to incorporate a slight uphill section similar to the National track used, and the change added much more life to the or Saddleback track. With only six 125cc Pros and six Open PIllII, the classes were combined. The 1255 started first with Mike Brier (Yam) taking the lead off the gate, never to be challeoged. Following Brier were Harley Hall (Suz) and John Chwastyk (Suz) to make the top three. About 20 seconds later the Open Pro class Slaned. Jim Rose (Yam) grabbed the holeshot but by lap three Chuck Lunde (Yam) took the lead with CMC number two rider Dale Lewis (Mai) clOlling and eventually overtaking Lunde. As the 14·lap event progiCSKd. Brier had mounted up a 50 second lead over Hall and Chwastyk and started to lap the Open PI'OII. As the moto ended, Brier won.and lapped the Open Pro winner, Lewis. Hall was second and Chwasryk third in the 125•. Lewis won the Open PI'OII with Rose and Lunde following. The second combined moto of the 125cc and Open bikes saw exactly the same front rtlJlJIers as moto one. Both Brier and Lewis dominated their classes for moto wins again and perfect scores for the day. Hall started the moto in fourth place but was able to move to second by lap eight, over· taking Bob Green (Suz) and Chwastyk. In the Open Pro class, Lewis led a majority of the moto but momentarily pulled off the track with mechanical problema, giving the lead to Lunde. Lewis restarted and regained the lead and the win. In the 250cc PIllII, "Mr. Holeshot" Man Tedder (Suz) led the field of 16 riders with Honda-mounted Brian Maloney closing. Pushing Norman NilsIon (Yam) for third were Wayne Reid (Yam) and Tim Lunde (Yam). On lap five. Maloney dasbed past Tedder for the lead on the uphill section and began to pull away. With the la winding down, Nilsson held onto ~ with Lunde moving ahead of Reid in the canyon section to permed Nilalon closely. On the last lap, Nilsson finally got by Tedder and thn both Tedder and Lunde tried everything in the book to overtake Nil80n for second place. But at the finish it was Maloney, Ni1slon, Tedder and Lunde. Moto two was all it took for Maloney to win the overall. His two good moto finishes awarded him the overall and the largest prize money of all the classes. Tedder was second overall with Lunde third over Andy Northrup (Fra) and Nilsson. Results Mill JR: 1.
