·th.rn M....... Sontli.rn Californi.·Arizon.·South.rn Me••d. came around the first tum it was Tarantino leading the pack. After the flJ'lt lap Tarantino was in the lead, johnJon held second -and Gerig was third. MOIIt of the people there expected to see johnJon and Gerig pass hitn on the next two laps, but instead Tarantino moved out into a very comfonable lead. Gerig passed jolmaon to take over second, but could only hold it for two laps. Every time Gerig tried to pass johnson he would slam the door in his face. Gerig never gave up and tried every thing he could with no success. The flag came out to signal the last lap. Gerig pushed his bike even harder than before and johnson came flying over Devil's Drop with only a bike's lead. johnJon went into the last tum on the inside and Gerid chose the berm on the outside. They took the flag with johnJon in second by half a wheel, giving Gerig third. The surprising Tarantino took first place with a 24 second lead. Now it was time to see if Tarantino's 24 second lead was luck or skill. They moved up to the line for the second moto, the gate dropped and corning around the tum it was Gerig in the lead, johnJon second and Tarantino third. They stayed 1·2-5 for the first three laps and were pulling away from the rest of the class. On the next lap Tarantino passed johnson and two laps later he picked off Gerig for first. johnJon then piclr.ed his spot and moved past Gerig for second. Tarantino finished flJ'St with a small lead over JohnJon with Gerig a close third. Tarantino proved that he won on slr.ill more than luclrJ Results l500 PRO: 1. Jim T..mino (Honl; 2. Scott .Johr-. WlII'ams scores aga'n at OCIR MX By Steven Crosby IRVINE, CA, MAY 21 Wheelsmith Maico rider Dave Williams made it eight out of 10 for class wins in the last five weeks at Orange County International Raceway Motocross by winning the 250cc Pro class. In the Open Pros Scott Cavness scored his first victory of the year under the lights. And perpetual Intermediate Randy Skinner tried his band in the 125cc Pro c1ass and finished second to Tony Gomez after wrenching a knee in practice. Moto one in the 250cc PrOII saw DG's Wayne Reid grab the holeshot through the tight first tum with Williams and Greg Zitterkopf right behind. Reid was able to hold on for three laps before Williams puUed right alongside, nudged Reid over and made the pass. Williams then rode away with the win with Reid maintaining second over Zitterkopf. In moto two Williams and Reid piled up in the first tum and Oran~ County Yamaha rider Mike Kelly assumed the lead. John McCaughey moved into second and. by the end of the first lap, Reid put his Yamaha into third. Williams. fifth at the end of lap one, was moving up steadily each lap. On lap two he caught Kerr, lap three Reid, lap four McCaughey and on lap five, when Kelly went down, Williams had the lead. While Williams was doing his thing, Reid was also on the move'and took second overall. Williams almost made it his founh double win of the season when he took the win in the first moto of Open Pro. Williams won the moto easily while Scott Cavness and Greg Zitterkopf w~ a war the entire race for second. At one point the two riders were side by side for half a lap neither one willing to give an inch. Finally Zitterkopf put his Advanced Cycle machine into second for good. Moto two saw Cavness get the lead with Williams right behind. But on lap two Williams pulled off when he heard stran~ sounds from inside the engine. As his brother/mechanic Rocky explained later, when they put the motor t~ther three weeks ago he gave the rod two weeks to live. It lasted two and a half and Dave pulled off the track before it could do any more dama~. Meanwhile, Cavness and Zitterkopf were in another war for the win with the nod finally going to Cavness on his Anaheim Suzulr.i bike. The best sponsman racing of the night was in the 125cc Novice class. Joel Johns emerged from the first moto with the win with Darrell Wall and Scott Fellhoelter second and third. Things really heated up in moto two. Johns took another holeshot on his Yamaha with WaU right behind and Larry Woody's Honda third. FeUhoelter staned back in the pack and by riding on the ra~ edge was able to move into fourth by the end of lap one. By the third lap, with his rear tire hopping everywhere, Fellhoelter had moved into second. For the next two laps Johns and Fellhoelter diced it out with Fellhoelter fmally getting by in the back section of the track. Fellhoelter had been llirting with disaster the whole race and it caught up with him 20 feet from the checkered.llag. Coming over the last whoop~de-doo he was thrown back on the seat of his Yamaha and slid right off the back when it did a wheelstand in mid-air. By the time he picked it up and pushed it across the finish line Johns had passed him and taken the win. For all his efforts, Fellhoelter ended up third overall.
