Two lor TarantIno at CRe Dunestown round at Saddleback By Lee Taylor ORANGE, CA, MAY 10 The third race of the California Racing Club's Dunestown Series, got off to a lumbering start at Saddleback Park. 22 The watering truck ran afoul, trapped on the side of a hill like a beached freighter. After dumping much of its load and creating a mud pond, the bulldozer came to its rescue, pushing the truck back to safety. The Mini races were rerouted and by the time the 12!K:c Pros left the line, much of the water had drained away. Andy Kirker, piloting a Suzuki for Torco and Hi· Point, grabbed the holeshot in the fint U5cc Pro moto. Following close in second was a ncw Pro, Ruben Torres, aboard a Suzuki for Kal·Gard. Torres discovered trial by fire with John Whelchel (Yam) breathing down his ~ncy and pressing hard for second until a rear flat forced Whelchel to the back of the pack. Easing himself by Richard Sands, Jeff Stanford and Darel Francis, Roger HClUley claimed the third place slot. When the moto wound to a close, Kirker led across with Torres and HClUley firm in second and third respectively. The second time around, found a batde for the lead between Suzukimounted Chris Swank and Van Nuys Cycle rider Darel Francis. With Kirker running third and Yamaha suppon rider Jeff Stanford in founh the action was hot and heavy. Hensley and Torres, running fifth and sixth reo spectively, were fighting tooth and nail to break back into the top three. Stanford was on the gas, out for top Yamaha contingency money for the class and slipped a wheel under Swank for the moto win. When the checken waved them home, Francis crossed over in second and Kirker fought Hensley off for third. Kirker ended the day with the winner's share, Stanford took home second place loot and third place money went to Hensley. Jim Tarantino, riding for Honda and DG, simply bliued the field in both the 250cc and Open Pro classes, taking down back-to-back wins in both contests. When the 250cc Pros roared off the line, Bob Kline, riding for Dick Allen Yamaha led the way with Tarantino on his tail. The Pros had more than their share of bad luck. Todd Clark tangled with Mike Shoemaker with both riden going down_ Clark recovered in time to rejoin the race but was set back from third to scvcnth. Steve Banning, Maico-mounted for Whcclsmith, escaped entrapment and took over sec· ond. With Kline now back in founh and pushing third-place John Whelchel it was utter madness. The only one with any breathing room whatsoever was Tarantino, out in front and burning up the track. When the moto wound·to a dose, Tarantino disappear, ed across the line and out of sight, Banning came home in second and finishing third was Whelchel. When the machines roared to life for the second time it was Tarantino out in front, followed by Kline, Banning, Yamaha suppan rider Jim Coffey and Whelchel. Kline wcot down, but recovered and was back up in fifth. Tarantino, meanwhile was all alone out front, far from the crowd. With Manning second, a battle shaped up between Whelchel and Clark for the third place slot, carrying them down to the finish line with Whelchel taking third, mere inches ahead of Clark. Kline finished in fifth and Coffey was sixth. Tarantino took home top money for the day, Banning scooped up second place loot and third overall went to Whelchel. Results eo NOV: 1. John _ (Y"": 2. Friday night, also was a qualifier for CRe's July 12 race at the Los Angeles Coliseum with the top 50% of every class qualifying. Steve Schmitz, riding a Yamaha, simply ran away with the 125cc Pro race. The fint moto saw Schmitz way out in front with Suzuki·mounted Rob· ert Laughlin running second and Perry Ccndro punuing in third. The second moto was an inatant replay with Schmitz, hands down, a wire to wire winner. Laughlin picked up second place loot for the evening with third overall going to Cendro. In the Open Pros, it was "nostalgia night" for Root fans. The fint moto foun Root holding onto the lead and fending off Tom Kelly. Towards the cod, Root dumped his Yamaha, leaving Kelly and his Husqvar· na the room they were looking for to take the moto win. Whco the big bore machincs CllIDC to life for the second moto, Root was there and taking command. Once more Root's Yamaha bit the dust and Kelly took over, holding Root back to second down to the wire. Kelly claimed top money for the clas with Root scooping up second overall loot. Whco the 250cc Beginners roosted off the line for their first moto, it was Mike Quimette (Yam) on his way to a spectacular pair of back-to-back wins. Mike McCracken was firm in second until dropping his bike and being set back to fifth. Arvan Lunsford, aboard the only Honda in the top three, scooted on into second and held posi· tion down to the moto's end. The second round of action saw once more, a Quimcttc/McCracken feud as the two Yamahas faced off. Again McCrackco wcot down, this time in front of three charging racers_ He found a window open to escape through and was forced back to ~th. With Lunsford now in second, McCracken started flying, moving steadily up through the pack and into third. A race of the ccotury wcot down between McCrackco and Lunsford for the second place slot with McCracken slipping a wheel under in time, claiming second. When the checkered flag waved the ride.rs home, Quimette took home the gold, Lunsford claimed second overall and third overall went to McCrackco. Bob Kline took on the 250cc Pro class and claimed a pair of aces for his sponsor, Dick Allen Yamaha. Kline led from the stan of the fint moto with David Lynch, piloting his Honda in second and Yamaha racen scattered throughout the pack. By the end of the moto, Kline led acroSs with Lynch finn in second. Wben the machines roared off the line for their second encounter it was Kline wbo once more led the way. Willy Simons, who had been riding a hard and challenging race, went down, suffering knee injuries and was out of tbe race_ Yamaha-mounted Doug Taft took over second with John Biffle, new to the Pro game, running a stronjt Joe third and fighting to hold back Brian Chcrcslthoff. Bime's lead was cut off at the pass as Rick Maki moved on into third, forcing Bime to founh_ Biffle dropped his bike in the back section of the track, and was out for the night. With Kline clearly the runaway leader, a Lynch/Maki duel for second became hot and heavy with Lynch grabbing second away from Maki right at the checkered flag. Taking home top money for the night was Kline, scooping up second place loot was Lynch and rounding out the top three money taken was Taft with a 5-4 ride. Resul ao BEG: 1. Troy Welty lSuzl: 2. Gerig gets two at CMCAscotMX By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, MAY 7 For the longest time, most every Pro class win at Ascot was taken by either Todd Peterson or T&O Yamaha sponsored Tim Lunde. Now the Pro class racing at Ascot Park is being invaded by some talented racers who usually race a t a differcot neck of the woods. This evening, David Gerig cleaned up in both the 250 and 500cc Pro classes while Steve Schmiu blasted the 12!K:c Pro class. Husky·mounted Gerig aced out Juan Benavidez aboard his Can-Am in the first moto of the 250cc Pros while Tim Lunde settled for third_ In the fmal moto, Norman Nilsson gave Gerig some competition but Gerig prevailed. A flawless I-I score allowed Gerig to away with the biggest pon.ion 0 the 250cc Pro money. Nilsson was second overall followed by Benavidez, Pete Murray and Lunde. Track 'N Travel Maico rider Dale Lewis waged war against Dave Gerig in the 500cc Pro class but Gerig held the lead in both of the motos for the fint place overall win in front of Lewis, Chuck Lunde, Troy Lee and John Stapleton. Steve Schmitz, a hotshoe at Indian Dunes. won the fust 125cc Pro moto but had to dice heavily with Roost Factory rider Frank Pilato.
