';~i . ~heD 'lUi' mmale came'up.' A
couple riden barely Rot slaned before
mechanical troubles forced them out,
though. Scot Harden's Husky began
loeing third gear ("It was marginal all
day yaterday.") and he returned the
bike to impound after riding a few
miles down the road.
Kevin Davis was another returnee
due to his KTM motor "shakin' a
whole bunch" in the frame. He tighten.
ed the front engine mount and dis·
covered the bottom one was mUsing
before going back out. He came back
again after a few minutes, though.
Mike Melton changed his right
shock at chedt one due to seals that
ltaned to go out.
The fastest fint grass track time was
168 shared by Cunningham and Gallo.
Stacy was one second siower for the
fastat 250cc time. Penton, Joyner and
Burleson on his 125 all had 178 second
clockings. Bush was second fastest 125
at 180 seconds.
The course after that used the same
paths except they were run backwards.
Riders seemed to treat the creek
crouings with more respect today;
more of them walked the bikes across.
LaVoie got caught, though, and his
motor sucked water making him a
couple minutes late to check seven. He
had also gotten stuck in a mud hole at
the grass track which slowed his time
to 195.
In addition to the second grass
track, an acceleration test was held on
a gravel road. Bruce Ogilvie powered
his Dale's Modem Cycle IT to the
fUtest Open clocIr.ing with 48.20
points. Stacy and Fredette tied at
49.85 for quickest 2501 while Ely's
55.95 got him the bat 175cc time.
Bush and Burleson were easily the
quidtat 125s with 54.50 and 54.95
points j t:llpectively.
The mOlOClWl course (IUD back·
wards today) suited Gallo just fine as
he sped to a 652. Kuenzer showed up
the Open bikes, however, with his 648.
Penton turned in the bat 175cc
time with a 685. Joyner, who was on
target for gold, ~ped to silver when
he encountered bike problems and
literaUy pushed his bike acrou for 951
points.
Burlt:llOn, Bush and Leonard put on
the best show of the day as they diced
back and forth in a battle that had
everyone on their feet. In (act,
Burlt:llOn and Bush clocked identical
682 times. Kevin Brown had a 682
also, but incurred 660 route points
that dropped him from gold.
The weather'which had held nis:ely
throughout the weekend, being mostly
cloudy but not raining, put an abrupt
end to the show after the last moto·
crou had been run as a thunderstorm
inundated the grounds. It probably
made the pits the muddiest pan of
both days.
