DeAnza sportsmen serIes starts By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD,CA,MAY3 DeAnza's long awaited sportsman series got underway last week with a strong turnout. The four week series will be awarding over $8000 of goodies from a long list of sponson including Malcolm Smith Produeu, Hawks Apparel, Works Per- fonnance, Tcrrycablc, PJI, Bell Helmets, J and M Trophies and more. On May 24, a drawing will be held from all of the entries determining the winnerofa 1981 YZSO. The sportstnan who gathered the mOllt poinu was Mini Beginner Dale Bolen (Yam), who topped his large class with a 4-1 pcrfonnance. The first moto was led by Mike Fitzgerald (Hon) from beginning to end while Kent Snyder (Yam) came up from a 10th place start to finish second. Keith Monabito (Yam) had held second through mOllt of the race, but ran into trouble on the last lap and dropped back to II tho Round two had Bolen take the lead early and keep it all tbe way home. This time the come from behind performance was done by Dino Terracciano (Yam), who started eighth and finished second for third in the final standings. Second overall went to Snyder who was third in round two. Fitzgerald had trouble in the fint lap and could only manage an 11th by the checkered flag, giving him sixth overall. Top 125cc rider of the day was Mark Milam (Yam) in the Novice class. Milam took both wins in spite of a fint moto stan that was well out of the top 10. Jimmy McManus (Suz) had gotten the holcshot and diced throughout the race with Mark Decker (Yam) and Todd Lindsley (Suz) before Milam came up and paseed all of them. Carlson (Yam) and Olaf Svcnscn (Kaw) trading the lead several times. A last lap mishap COIIt Carlson the lead and gave the win to Quigley. In the second race. however, it was Don Jandt (Yam), who was second in round one, that took the lead on the second lap and held it all the way home. That with Lindsley second. McManus and Decker were at it again in fourth and fifth with McManus coming out on top. Then McManus inherited third when Con Berner (Yam) dropped out in the late laps.
