Storer, Manweb hot at CMMC MX By Rod Eschenburg SAN DIEGO, CA, APR. 19 Kawasaki Motor Corp. rider Sam Storer parlayed three wins, two seconds and a fourth place into a clean sweep of the Stock a.nd Modified Minis plus the Special }'o5cc Mini class. Both of the regular 80cc Expert Mini class wins came off tie· breakers; the Stock class wu a 2-1 ef· fort over Russ Winltler (Kaw), and the Modifieds produced a wild three way tie·breaker over Paul Dennis (Yam) and WinItler. Storer's 4-1 wu good enough u Dennis had a 5-2 finish over Winkler's 2-5 go. The 10Sec class waan't even c101e u Storer cruised to a four-point advaD~ over Paul Dennis after top Experts Kenny Dunlap and Chris Swift were eliminated by crashes in the two SOcc classes after posting' first moto wins. "Bullet Bader" Manneh changed to the Yamaha brand and promptly took both the Stock and Modified 12-16 . Intermediate Mini classes. Manneh seems to have .learned that you sometimes have to "slow down to go fast" as he scored a come from behind tie· breaker win over Richie Dobbs in the Stocks and seemed content to run just fast enough for the Modified win again over Dobbs (Yam). However it wu Dobbs who will be a new Expert for the next race meet; his second was' enough to move him past the transfer point mark. It lookS like Manneh will be right behina him though; like about three more racesl Moving to the 125cc Motorcycle classes, once again Yamaha support rider Ronnie Lechien ripped the Experts for a two for two blast of both the Stock and Modified classes. Although Kawasaki mounted Charlie Harries was able to give Lechien some competition in the Stocks - actually leading for a couple of laps - Lechien was in command all the way and is yet to be defeated at Barona this season. Once again the 125cc Intermediates provided great action, and event hough Honda of Oceanside rider Billy Evans took both classes, it wasn't easy. In the Stocks, Evans took a come from behind win over Suzuki of Poway rider Bobby Voorhees, and in the Modifieds, Evans had a squeaker win over Don Seay (Suz). Ron Lechlen ItnItched his moto win atreak to nine 8t SpeedW8y 117. Enroll in the 1981 Official Suzuki . SChool of Motocross. HardIck, L echien contInue at Speedway J.J.7MX By Rod Eschenburg CHULA VISTA, CA, APR. 22 Suzuki support rider Clint Hardick swept both the 500cc and 250cc Pro classes at Speedway 117, but the show of the night was once again the 125cc Pros where Yamaha support ride Ronnie Lechien scrambled to a fifth straight victory. While the box score shows that Lechien went two for two and eItended his -moto win streak to nine straight we're sure that Ronnie would admit to the fact that more than oj little luck was involved in the wins. 1980 Continental Moto·sports Club and Speedway 117 125cc Pro champ .Rick Johnson (JT Yamaha rider) was on hand for the first start of the 1981 Coke Championship season and grabbed a super holeshot in the . first moto. The wild three abreut start saw a charging Jon Faure (Escondido Hon) hit the deck and Lechien running back in fourth. Lechien finally worked his way to 1=--==..::.=::=:;:<=-==-=-=-=-=':=-=-:"::.:.:'::::"::,,:: ~ == =::. =-==-_ .....~"'="'="=:~;..===..=.=-=---::: .. 111 third, but it looked like Johnson had the win wrapped up with Scott Meyer (Suz) in second. All of a sudden Johnson slid down and trapped Meyer and Lechien was in the lead with Meyer in second and Johnson third! Johnson came back for second, and the stage wu set for a second round show-down. The gate went down in round two and Meyer.and Joe Bond (Kaw) were up front with Lechien and Johnson very ti,ht in third and fourth; they both disposed of Bond and then the race for the overall was on. Johnson looked to be the faster and started poking his front wheel up alongside Lechien, and just when it looked like he wu going to make a quick mid-air pass, pow, the chain came om Lechien was home free in second, but this is not this rider's M.O., so he went to work and caufht Meyer on the last lap and posted hIS ninth straight moto victoryl With the 125cc;..Pros leaving every· body guping, it was hard to focus on the top sporting rider class, but here goes. We're picking the Mini Juniors where first timer Cory Falter (Yam) took a wild tie·breaker over lut week's winner Jeff McCoy. Falter looked to be the winder in the first moto also, but a late lap, scrambling effort by McCoy dropped him to second. The win in the second moto and the' overall made it three straight for the second year rider as he went two for two on the preceeding Sunday at Barona Oaks. In ATC action, the Open Modified big bore blasters saw "Dyno Dean" Sundahl and his factory Honda go two for two in spite of great pressure first from teammate Mark "WaJ:Cey" Weixeldorfer, and secondly, from privateer Honda rider Mike Coe. .
