aster City - Searchlight - Sidewinder Road - Confusion struck .in the Veteran's class too as Bill Saluman was steadily moving hiS Maico forw.ard only. to take the wrong trail and lose about 15 places. This left Vet Amateur Rick Burros in the lead with Desen M.C. member Pete Kenney right behind for the Expen win. Pete's riding real strong and says he's going all out in the points chase. Regular Amateur winner ahead of Rick was Steve Kiunke in 11th overall. . Senior Heavyweight Morris Norman managed to hold off Gary Charters' pesky little 125 Suzuki for the overall Senior win. The Novices wanted to show that they could dice it out on the trail also so Mike Jones and Dave Kelly reeled in Winkel and fought over the lead for the rest of the race with lones winnning by a bikelength. A coupk of bikes back was Lori Farmer for another Women's win. She just had Benny Padilla do her Mono's suspension and was raving about it. Funher back was sister Triria for second. Why is Lori s.ponsored by Team Buckeroo while Tricia settles for "Papa Farmer?" . Turnout was slim this weekend with 280 racers making the stan line. Too many people ~ probably still thrashed from' riding Viewfinders' last weekend. A raftle was held for Rescue 5 to provide them with much needed funds and turned out' to he a great idea..Let" see more of thai! of trials riding. Second Open A Vet Guy Biggs (Yam) and first Open A Larry Woodruff (Doug Douglas CanAm) reportedly lost most of their seconds at the check. A couple of well placed field checks later and the finish of the first loop was at hand. Being unknown checks of unknown mileage, riders had to keep time all the way to the finish of both loops. At the end of a half hour break with odometers reset to zero, riders started the second loop up the same sandwash as the first. Just before the end of the wash, the second loop spliced off into some neat 24' mph ridges. A check-in followed by a tie· breaker check out' had most riders still on zero. Drochak, first Open B Senior'Erick Lehmann (Malcolm Smith IT465), second Open B Vet Tom Cole, second Open B Senior AI Nourian and first Open C Senior Steve Harman, all on 465 Yamahas, rolled through that check in a solid wave losing just one second each. A few miles fanher and things got really interesting. The course went thiough a series of shallow canyons. ridges and rolle~ at SO mph. One check and lots of rocks and dust later and .only six riders were still on zero. Drochalr.. Lair. Woodruff. Cole. fint Open C vei Leroy Wilson and first Open C Steve' Norman were all that m.ade it. Hard Iud story of the day goes to Tom Cole who rolled into the next checlr. a minute hot. Ouch. two pOints and one .ec:ond lost. Lehm.ann, first Open B Jotlll Owen (IT 425). 1980 D-58 number one Bob Zullo (second OpenA), .1980 P-38 number one .Kerry Standifer'(first Open A Vet) and Guy Biggs just missed the card flip and dropped one point at the end of the "special test" section. An easy cool off ride to the ~ts allowed most riders to make the finuh on time. Craig Lair and Larry Woodruff took two man team brass, and with John Owen, three man team honors. 'Warm temperatures. excellent course design and marking, couneous and efficient checkpoint' and sign up personnel; what more could one ask? How about asking Joe Pit racer to stay home and give us safe riders a break? More people got hun on Saturday than during the race on Sunday. Most notable was 1980 D-38 number three. enduro ace Bruce Borton with a broken collar bone. The next D-58 enduro points race is a "One Day Trial" May 10 at Plaster City. Watch the calendar section for more info. Also, a Tecate, Baja, Mexico enduro is rumored to be int he works for this summer. • DrochakwlliS 0.38 Bush Bunny Endu~' , By Larry Woodruff' PLASTER CITY. CA. MAR. 22 Open B Vet Keith Drochak rode his YZ465 to a near perfect score (two seconds dropped) at the DS8 Bush Bunny Enduro put on by the Bush Eaters M.C. The only rider on a bike other than an Open class machine in the top 15 was second overall 250cc A Craig Lair' (Doug' Douglas Can-Am) with 10 seconds lost. Keith and Craig are members of the Bar Benders West M.C. which placed eight out of the top IS finishers. The Bush Eaters ran a poker run before the enduro with a ATC 110 for first prize. Tom Bryant of Chula Vista rode home a winner with four eights. The second prize, a $200 welding set, went to Norm Faulkner who held two pairs, aces and kings. The third prize winner of a $100 Delgado helmet was Chad Reed (kings and queens. 10 high). Congrats to all the other prize winner and special thanks to ",11 the great companies and people who donated the prizes. Instead of running the minis. threewheelers, and women on the fint loop of the enduro, the Bush Eaten wisely had the easy poker run for them to have fun on. This left riden two loops of heavy duty time-keeping without worrying about the wife and kids. The club used a different bike for mileage this time than the Jail House enduro. Most riders had to adjust r.lths every five miles. As the error was consistent through the ride, it was just another aspect of time-keeping enduro riden must adapt to. • After a long sandwash the first loop led straight into some of the weirdest moonscape'like terrain I've ever seen. Not long after the three-mile speedo marker came the first loop tie-breaker check. As some were not quite used to the -speedo error. checkers were entertained with some outstanding displays Results OVERAll: Koilh IlfochIk. OPEN A: 1. lMry Woodruff; 2. Bob ZUllo; 3. BIK -.
