Marty Smith takes D·38 HS By Loretta Pipkin BURRO BEND, CA, MAR. 29 Hig~ flying motocross star Marty Smith shined in the Din Riders' seventh annual Rabbit Run. Team Suzuki's Smith capped the 30 overall win with a good challenge from D-58's Leon Livingston. After an eight year absence, former number one plate holder Ed Foland made it back to the desert with a good showing starting in the first lap where he was fifth on a 125. The rocky terrain of the 20 mile loop didn't hinder Smith as he made the first loop in 20 minutes flat. Livington was 50 seconds behind. 0-57 rider Paul Christiansen was third "I had a good start," said Christensen. ''Smith, Livingston and I were right there, except Smith doesn't ride on the ground - he's in the air most of the timel We diced a little through the hills, then he just pulled away and I crashed three umes." "I went down, too," said Smith. "After the bomb I got to the top of a hill and misled the tum. Two guys got past and one went down; I guess that was Christiansen. Anyway, I followed the other ODe (Livingston) down the wash and pasaed him on a hill." On the second loop Smith picked up another 50 seconds over Livingston, who hung in there for aecond. Through the wash Paul Eddy was picking up a nagging Darryl Richardson in fifth spot. Foland and Christiansen were third and fourth. On the third loop Smith and livingston were .1-1 and Eddy got by Richard· son, Foland and Christiansen for third spot. By now they were in the final loop, ... ~~.~~~.~~~~ was shoving the mid 90s. Smith lapped 19 riders before taking the checkered flag, Livingston got 11, and Eddy got three more. Bill Reams captured the Vet Expert class with Ed Mundy second. Number one Vet Bob Larson fmished fourth with a grin, stating it just wasn't his day. Results OPEN EX: 1. L-. l.MngIlan lYomI: 2. Mike _ lYom); 3. J.n _lYoml. 260 EX: 1. Morty Smilh CSuzI; 2. Zoller zaps D·38 HaM By Loretta Pipkin CALEXICO, CA, APR. 12 Lady Luck rode with Mark Zoller as he took his Pro Cycle KTM to the overall win in Imperial Valley M.C. 's hare 'n' hound. The rugruged Yuba Basin, off Highway 98 w. the scene of two loops, one 22 miles and the other 55 miles. The start was front-wheel·straddle on one line and with dead engines to the moans of Desert wile Zoller, Leon Livingston and Dan Mathews all picked a better line. Suzuki's Marty Smith, out for his second desert race, was back in the pucker bushes in a hole. However, by the first check he had regained his composure and ,the lead. Baja rider Zoller was a minute behind at the end of the loop. Smith pitted as Zoller went by him. Smith flashed out and was past him in a flash. Dale Stevenson limped in with bent bars, a crimped wheel and a nice case of rash after doing a Flying W passing Paul Eddy 12 miles into the flJ'st loop. Amateur rider Tim Martin went down hard and Brady Harris stopped and gave first aid, staying with the downed rider until the paramedics arrived. Tun broke a co1Iarbone and was severeIy bruised and had to he airlifted out as a precaution. Gassin' it proved a little too much on the second loop. Smith ran out of petrol one, and a half miles from the finish. Mike AIsof, in the top five, went dry. Matt Hope stopped and gave ~ ps. Hope also gave up two finish poIIuons. Don Mathews was moving up fast with plenty of gas. This was his desert and he knew how to read it. Zoller had now backed off a little on the big 495. "After I passed Smith and he was out of gas I just knew I was going to have the same fate. That's when I realized Mathews was right on me and I 'had to go for it." Zoller crossed the finish a half a bikelength in front of Mathews' 250. There was less than a pint of gas 'in the tank. Terry Stauwald, a 125 Amateur, captured his class and third overall. , Strauwald ~ a movin' up young rider; one to watch in the desert. Fourth was Matt Hope, fifth went to first Vet Ed Mundy, followed by an unhappy Smith who rode to the pits rather swiftly. Mike AIsof was seventh and Roger Adsit was eighth and first Senior., 0-58 has two events coming up before summer break: the Notorious Dawgs' SO-mile Hare Scrambles April 26 at Yuha Basin, and a one day trial event for desert and enduro riders at Plaster City May 10. Clark collects Rovers D·37 HaH win By DeVore Fortney RED MOUNTAIN, CA, APR. 12 Terry Clark (Hus) and Bruce· Ogilvie (Yam) made cameo appearances out in the desert and ran away with the show at the seventh annual Rovers' Boner Run. While neither Terry nor Bruce race, regularly in District 57 anymore they like to come out every few months to show everyone they haven't lost their touch. Actually, Terry was at the Invader's race in March and ran a tough second to Balentine so he was hungry for an overall and that's just what he got. . No one made it easy for Terry since besides having Bruce to deal with, there was Up-Tite Husky ace Dan Ash· craft who dogged him the whole race just as he did at Invaders. Dan is the hot 250cc rider this year with a couple of firsts and a few seconds to take the unofficial points lead. The bomb was a couple of miles north of Charlie's Place with a faiJ'ly unused run back toward Charli 'so A \,.. .. too .. 'P I LeMans start was used which helped spread the riders out a bit but what really slowed them down was the incredible amount of dust off the start. After blowing wildly all day and night Saturday the wind died down to a standstill for race morning. Three miles out the riders were aiready in single file and coming over or low hill it was Ogilvie in the lead but not looking as fast as usual. Right behind were Desert Viper Rick Schumaker (Hus) , Ashcraft, Rick Zajic (riding pie plate), Kenny Upp (Yam) and Clark. The course headed straight down some fast trails towards Hwy. '595 before heading north on a ridge to the 4 Aces' starting area and back towards camp. Before they reached the pits Terry had moved into fourth with only Ogilvie, Schumaker and Ashcraft ahead of him. Off the Novice/Beginner start it was pie plater Greg Winkel 011 a 465 Yarnaha holding a shaky lead over Invader Dave Kelly (Suz). Moving up fast were Desert Viper Mike Jones on a Yamaha water'pumper, Ray Conway on a 250 Husky, Dirt Digger Rich Kinscow, Badger Steve Klein and Invader Dale Criske. Conway didn't stay in the hunt long as his clutch went bye-bye right after second check. Into the pits it was Klein, Kelly, and Jones behind Winkel still holding his lead. , Beginners are denied the excitement of pitting and go straight into the fm· ishers chute. First district rider in there behind three pie platers w. Heavyweight Pete Tolmasoff followed closely by fmt 250« Jeff Goodman of the Desert Rats. Other Beginner winners were C biker Glenn Jones of the Desert Vipers, Vet Bob Murray, Trail Novice Eric Hallengath of the 4 Aces and Senior Ken Chamberlain. The second loop headed out of the pits towards the Spangler Hills on a ,chewed-up cross-grain trail and then over to Station Road where it hooked up with the first loop which was re-run . the rest of the way back in. This made for a 50 mile loop which required an alternate gas stop back at the road crossing. It was between the pits and the alternate gas stop that racing luck pushed some riders ahead, some behind and some broken or lost. Terry Clark muscled his Husky past Schumaker, pulling Ashcraft with him. Ogilvie's rear backing plate started crumbling, giving Clark the lead with Ashcraft still in tow. Bruce salvaged third by holding Schumaker at bay who in tum kept Kenny Upp in fifth. Kenny tried his best but was slipping and sliding due to his rear tire suffering from an acute case of Disappearing Knob Syndrome. Moving up past Rick.Zajic into sixth was Checker Howard McCasland on his 495 KTM with Chuck Stearns still a ways back of Rick. Chuck was having a battle fighting off Checker Pete Postel on his water-cooled Yamaha. Pete was looking for another C bike win to keep him in the points chase but it wasn't his day as he lost the course coming down a steep hill before the gas stop and missed a check. Since the checks weren't numbered Pete never knew and continued on, only to be disqualified. Even more frustrating was the fact that the next C bike was Tom Elias way back in 18th. Taking over ninth w.as new Expert Tony Megla. Squeaking into the top 10 was a very stock-looking IT250 ridden by Mike "Downhill" Alexander who hasn't been out in the dez for a couple of years. Nobody else can ride an IT that fast so let's hope "Downhill" is back to st!Yt 1it A j t'.·1 I..... t.. ........ '.J J
