Yes, the starting gate from Micro to Open looked 1iIte a "Who's Who in Texas Motocross" with several classes being split, and in 125 and 250cc Pro action, qualifi~ had to be run. "Too Tough" Tim Butler (Yam) took the 125cc honors and Kirk "Superman" Spencer (Yam) took home the big bucks by taking 250 and Open Pro overalls to pad his wallet with green gold. The intense racing didn't begin and end with the Pro classes, however. Notable efforts came from rider after rider and among the mOllt notable or outstanding was Micro Mini speedster Cody Marek and his Role RichlYamaha suppon YZ who charged from behind for a pair of wins. Cody's brother Stacey was another standout as he devastated Group A in Mini Senior action aboard another ROle Rich/Yamaha suppon bike. Group B and the Mini Stock c1asses were led brilliantly by Mr. Mini Bike, Bryan "Boom Boom" Abernathy who took his Yamaha suppon/Arlington Yamaha to the victory circle ahead of Richardson Kawasaki's "Racin' Jason" U~w in the Modified and ROle Rich Yamaha's Jeff Gibson in the Stock c1as. Putting a wrap on outstanding Mini rider perfonnances was Mini Junior hotshoe Damn Champagne (Yam) whOle 5-1 effon tells the story as Champagne proved he was race ready when he came back in round two for the win. Outstanding efforts at Wolfcreek were as common as nOle bleeds in boxing or knee injuries in football with ''just Plain" Mike Foytilt taking his L.C.S. Big Town Suzuki to wins in 125cc Stock and 125cc Intermediate Group A action. Ed Brake (Suz) and his Dallas Suzuki applied the pressure in the Stock c1as with Team W.R.W:s "Radical" Russell Brown (Yam) in FoytiIt's roOlIt in 125cc Intennediate. 40 125cc InteJmediate Goup B had Caner Yamaha's Mike Payne piloting his yeUow bird to victory arcle as round one winner Ed "No" Brake (Suz) 1ett1ed in RCond after two rounds of racing. Another standout in the ama_ ranks _ Corpus Christi', Woody Atwood (Yam) who took the touP 250cc Stock and 250cc Intermediate er-p A cIa.es, and Jon IUndhart (Yam) who devastated GrouJ' B of 250cc Intermediate, wimung by _ 251eCOnds. Rounding out the amateur ponion of the program was Kevin Shelburne (Yam) who led a large field of 250cc Novices to the winner's circle in each round as Mike Franks (Kaw) led the "over the hill" Over 50 rid~ to the winner', circle. An intense, uneasy, nervous feeling was commonplace as the 125cc Pros lined up for their qualifiers. The feeling wasn't limited to thOle waiting in line at the staging area or at the rest· room with anticipation of the racing to come. As Group A of the 125cc Pros rounded turn one in their seven-lap qualifier, several thought what they had come to see - a "Flyin' Bryan" Taylor (Suz) aerial display - was over. Taylor found hiJnself on the ground as the group rounded tum one. Seven laps later, "Brilliant Bryan" headed the fteld as they took the check· ers with Mike Clements (Suz) a dOle second and Mark "Peaches" Rakestraw (Yam) third. Group B qualifier had similar lap times. However, "Too Tough" Tim Butler aboard his rocket ship from Big "D" Yamaha finished well ahead of !leCond place rider Keith Eldred (Yam) from Pearland. Round two had speculators wondering if the classic duel between Butler and Taylor would materialize. It bepn with Consolation winner Steve Gauthier (Suz) grabbing the holeshot only to suceutDb to Too Tough's pres· sure. The anticipated duel failed to surface when Taylor, Gauthier and Eldred collided on a downhill while chasing a fleeing Butler. The tenaeness continued until the checken came with Clements keeping Butler honest. A distant third was John Bersch (Hon) with Chuck "The Hulk" Dawson (Yam) taking his Big "D" mount to founh. Overall it was Butler, Clementi, Bersch, Rakestraw, Dawson, Brad Honon (Yam) and Mike Mcintyre (Yam). Spectators had just enough time to catch their breath before the stan of the 250cc Pro qualifi~, the exciting round two being referred to as "the best race of the day:' Q.ualifying in round one meant ftnishing in the top 12 10 only half the field qualified for round two. Group A winner Ricky Blackwell (yam), with only two raps of practice, rode flaw1eu1y to victory after talting command ear1y. BlacItwell held on for the duration with Mark Rakestraw second, Kirk Dillon (Yam) from Big "D" third and Monte AnderIOn from Caner's founh. Group B qualifier had Kirk "Superman" Spencer (Yam) talting top honors with D &: S Cycles' "Gassin' Glen" Goodier (Hon) in second, Race Ready's Sean O'Brien (Yam) in third and El Paso's Maby Mcintyre (Yam) fourth. Round two separated the men from the boys as Ricky Glaser (Yam) took the holeshot and never looked back. Just behind Glaser is where the racing took place as Nick ''The Sticlt" Cordova, Spencer and "Collision Course" Craig Riddle (Kaw) battled. What became a four-way battle for the lead climaxed with lesa than a lap to go when "Superman" took the high line around "The Stick" with "Collison Course" talting notes in founh as Glaser managed to hold off the hard charging group. Overall it was SfleD5er faster than a speeding bullet m first, Blackwell, Glaser, Cordova, A1ley Semar (Yam), Rake· straw and Monte Anderson. As the lUll dipped low in the sky, the Open Pros finished what was a drain· ing day of racing. More powerfuJ than a locomotive, Spencer made it a double, without talting a drink, as he took top honors in Open Pro action as well. Spencer moved into the lead early in round one and held for the duration and teammate Monte Ander· IOn (Yam) moved to second as he continues his comeback climb. Goodier (Hon) finished third in the talented fteld of veterans. Round two, the racing got intense with the sun adding a little mystery as to where the benns actually were. Darren "The Spoiler" Rhoten (Yam) held the fast lane as he came back to old fonn after a fifth in round one to win round two. Overall winner Spencer settle for second, and AnderIOn moved to third with "Gassin' Glen" i Stutts steals Capitol City night MX moto. Stutts immediately went to see if Beckham was all right before returning to his own pits. Jerry Farmer moved past Johnson and Honon late in the moto to finish second. Honon tried every line on the track before settling for fourth behind Johnson. In spite of having last pick at the linr due to his fll'lt moto DNF, Glaser powered to another devastating holeshot. Honon stuffed his Husky into second with Jerry Farmer and Stutts right behind. Glaser pulled out a big lead during the first lap while the next three riders fought for poeition. Stutts got around Fanner and dove inside in the fll'lt turn to pass Honon. GlaRr continued to stretch his lead to three-quaners of a lap over everyone but Stutts. Stutts closed to within a quaner lap but got nocloeer. Glaser held on to win with Stutts second and Honon third. Stutts took the overall with Fanner second and Honon third. Four other rid~ put in fine rides to win both motos of their Jespective c1asses. Lester Munson and his CanAm laid waste to the Over 50 clasa with ho1eshots and giant leads in both motOl. Greg Beach made his return to Austin after a long ablence and swept the 250cc Novice class on his old Honda after battles with Ralph Rust (Hon) and David Reneau (Yam). Rusty Burns dominated the 125cc Novice clasa and Hardluck Pitts returned from South America to destroy the Mini Senior clasa. Austin', weather is just coming into its own and there should be IIOIDe good racing. See ya' all there. By Kerel Kremer Results .Dlno _ _ JR: J. in founh.
