2ND ANNUAL Tommy Newman (Yam) shot into the lead of the first Senior Minibike moto before Michael Hammer (Yam) got serious, pressed and passed Newman. Newman pressed harder, got back around and led to the finish. Bobby Lowman (Kaw) took third. Chuck Jones (Kaw) pulled the holeshot in the second moto with Newman and Baxter following. Newman wouldn't let up and passed for the lead. Jones finished second with Baxter third. Tony Lucente (Yam) grabbed the holeshot and held on to win the first moto of I25cc Expert. Dennis D~ft (Yam) rode in second with Steve Hendricks (Yam) sticking close. Bob Sanford (Suz) had a sma,1I misunderstanding with the gate, got up and quickly moved through the pack to fourth place. Hendricks got around Daft to claim second. The second moto, Sanford pulled the holeshot and rode to earn first across the checkers. Hendricks rode all the way in second to earn first overall. Over 100 riders turned out to challenge' the !l20-foot hill at Red River Cycle Ranch. Nebraska and Iowa were represented by several riders anxious to get climbing. Gary Waddell brought his new I IOOcc-plus custom built Yamaha down for a try. It is definitely one of a kind. The THA had changed the makeup of their classes in an effort to make a place for everyone. There are two divisions Stock and Modified. There are four c1asIes in the Stock divi5ion (125, 185, 250 lind Open). To qualify for these classes, the bikes must have stock size wheels and most important of all must not be extended. Several riders tried out special combinations in the Exhibition class in preparation for the Widowmaker. James Blanton debuted a 900cc Triumph running on alcohol and pulling chains. It had a special swingarm and on his last run the shock mounts broke. Blanton still had a good run and seemed pleased with the engine. Henry Polley's SC500 Yamaha sported three shocks, a super-long hand made swingarm and a metal paddle tire. He was satisifed with its perfor- mance but the surface of the hill was not suited to the paddles. A good rain Saturday made the hill tacky and traction was no problem. Nearly everyone had faster runs on their second tries after the hill had dried a little. Gene Topliff, riding a Triumph in the 750cc class, was one exception. He made a beautiful run and when the clocks stopped, it had taken him 6.15 seconds to go !l20 feet. For the rest of the first round, the riders tried to catch him. Duffy Douglas and his 465 Yamaha came closest in the Exhibition class and gave the other riders lots of hope. Douglas topped the hill in 6.20 seconds. The second round became exciting during the !l70cc class. After a disappointing first ride, Mike Polley hit the top in 6.65 seconds on his Bultaco to take the win by a big margin. If the other riders could improve a little, Topliff would be in trouble. Duffy Douglas repeated his Exhibition ride in the 500cc class. He seemed to have his 465 figured out. His time for the win was 6.24 seconds. John Blanton on his 465 was second WIth a ride that took 6.!l7 seconds. Topliff could not repeat his fast run the second time. Even though several riders significantly improved their rides, no one could knock Topliff out of first. Mike Polley used a 750 Kawasaki to top the hill in 6. 2!l seconds for second while George Carlisle took his Triumph over in 6.44 seconds for third. The Open class riders could not get it together even though it seemed to be their kind of hill. That left the Exhibition riders to do the job. It looked for a split second like George Carlisle and his IOOOcc Triumph had a chance near the end of the class. But somehow after a super holeshot, he got 'Crossed up and stopped abruptly in a rut at about 150 feet. Gary Waddell made an easy run up the hill the first time feeling out both the hill and his radically modified Yamaha XS II. He waited until nearly the end of the climb to try again. He looked over the first 100 or so feet of the hill and decided to start a few inches away from the most popular spot. He worked his spot over. brought up his tricked out Yamaha (he has gotten just a bit lazy and instead of kick starting, he's modified a chain saw with a ratchet assembly that attaches to the side of the engine to start it). His holeshot was beautiful. The chains were working well and then the gremlin that got Carlisle got him. Waddell's beautiful, powerful bike landed in the same spot. That left Topliff and his Triumph on top at the first Texas hillc1imb of the season. See you May 24. • COORS .... High Country Classic 00 ' 0') ~ 0.. « BEGINNERS Be AMATEURS 6 FOOT TROPHIES Sat.
