Now I've got to go out and win a short .track." As was the case in his pre· vious half mile and TT wins at Ascot, this victory was at a J.C. Agajanian· promoted event. The point standings changed a bit as point leader Steve Eklund went down in a fll'St comer incident, but remounted to finish 10th and keep his points lead. A sour engine followed by a crash in his heat left Jay Springsteen out of the main event, so Mike Kidd's fourth place finish moved him to second in the standings, where he trails Eklund, 52-42. Kidd and felIow Roberts/Lawwill Racing rider jim Filice, who finished fifth in the National, were HarleyDavidson-mounted. The new Yamaha 750 V -twin received its first dyno run earlier in the week, but according to Men Lawwill, there was not enough time to make the bikes race ready for this event, though they wiU be ready for the May 3 San Joee Mile. Team Honda's V -twins were on hand but lacked the speed to run with the front runners. Their best finish was a ninth in the Trophy Race turned in by Jeff Haney. The rate of attrition in the National was fairly high as riders dropped out way back due to crashes and mechanical troubles. Behind fifth place Filice in the order were Scott Pearson, Bubba Sboben, Wayne Rainey and Steve Morehead, with Eklund rounding out the top 10. Randy Goa challenged for the lead early, but came u:r with a sour engine and cruised aroun the track to finally wind up 11th. Time trlels Five riders broke the existing 39.02 IeCODd record. Grand National Champ Randy Goa lIee1Ded determined to get back in the groove after a lackluster Ascot TT performance, and pushed his Brent Thompson-tuned factory XR 750 around the oval in 58.622 seconds. Terry Poovey turned in a 58.7!»5 lap on his Ted Poovey-built heat. Defending Sacramento champion Hank Scott and former Sacto winner Mike Kidd also broke the 39-second ban:ier. . . Kid~, .w~o sold his Harley-DaVl~n after JOmtng the Roberts/La wWlll group, borrowed it back, but it omy lasted rwo laps in practice. He borrowed another machine, belonging to Darrell Cummings, and used that bike for the remainder of the night. Heat8 Riding a Ray Beck Harley, Scott Pearson jumped into the lead of the first beat, trailed by Ricky CampbeU and Steve Morehead. Alex Jorge.nsen and Randy Goes made their way up to the; leaders by the IeCODd lap. jorgy cut through to second rwo laps later, then .-ci Pearson on lap five. As Jmgensen took the lead, Morehead coasted off the track when his battery became disconnected. Pearson took back the lead a lap after he lost it, but then Goas came from third to first in one lap. The final four laps were a see-saw battle for the lead between Jorgensen and Goes, with the Megacycle Cams/High Pointsponsored Jorgensen pulling a move off the final tum to take the checkered by at least two inches over Goes. Pearson was third and transferred tot he National; CampbeU was founh and headed for the semi. ShoeilJack SiIrmore-spoosored Terry Poovey showed the rest of the second heat riders the way to the first turn, with Jay Springsteen and Billy Labrie scrapping for second. Springsteen seemed to slow going down the backstraight, and then tangled with another rider and went down in the founh turn. Poovey continued to lead up front, but second was now beld by Rookie fun Filice on a Men Lawwill Harley. Labrie was third, soon to be pressured by Brad Hunt and Scott Parker. Hurst took over third at the midway point in the 10-lap race, then went by Filice a lap later. With two laps to go, Filice got his second place back and Hurst staned to come under attack from KloulWiIecofTex PeelIH-D/Diamond/ S6:W/ND/Rick To1do-Iponsored Park· er. Parker nabbed the final transfer on the ninth lap, and then he preaured Filice to the point where t1le rwo of them were right on Poovey as he took the checkered flag. Hum and Labrie fol· lowed, with Haney a distant sixth on the Honda. The third heat was Family Scott as brothers Hank and Gary battled out front.
