. . -e:-tall. . - .............. - I I Moran brothers, the Ventura Raceway added another superstar to our invisible hall of fame - this time, the Champ. Bruce Penhall performed with pttdictable billiance last night; unfonunately he raced in England, not in front of the ultimately disappointed crowd who turned out for speedway Tues4ay night at the Ventura Raceway. A last minute scheduling change postponed Penhall's visit to Ventura until next week. Lance King did show up, and even Penhall couldn't have done much better than the 17 -year-old who won both main events in convincing style. When he turns 18 in a few months, King will join over a dozen U.S. riders now competing in the British Speedway League. In the handicap ponion of the program, King, Dave DeTemple and Mike Muntean all rode fast through slow traffic to win heat races off backyardage markers. Young Dennis Bransford won the final heat off the , zero-yard line. In the first semi race, Keith Larsen and Muntean wett side by side when Larsen crashed directly in front of DeTemple who was trailing. DeTemple laid it down perfectly, thus avoiding unsightly tire marks acrosa Larsen's body. According to Muntean, Larsen crashed on his own. According to Larsen, Muntean knocked him over. According to the referee, the race was restaned minus an irate Larsen. Alan Christian didn't care either way as he won the restart off the 50-yard line. Tom Hughes won the other semi. King made it look easy as he won the handicap main event by 10 or so lengths over Craig Schaefer. His primary competition had a leu enjoyable time in the six-man race. DeTemple broke down on the second lap. And Christian, in trying to bump his way past Hughes, missed and found himself sitting on his wallet in the last tum - good enough for fifth place. In the four-rider scratch races, where each man starts at the gate, King, Christian, DeTemple and Moose Kennedy (all 90 Ibs. of him) each took easy, noneventfuJ victories. In the first semi, Fillmore's Bob McLain got a super stan and led his race until he went too high on the last lap and was passed by Muntean but still managed a second place finish good enough for a transfer to the main event. Astonisbingly enough, Christian, who won everything except the National Championship last year, failed to make the main as he came up with a dead motor at the wrong time. The scrateb main was all King as he led from start to finish. besting DeTemple, McLain and Muntean, to complete a very productive evening. In Second Division racing. Ed Castro won his heat and the main by plenty. In Third Division action. Mike Baeder enjoyed the drive back home to La Habra as he took the main and his first ever trophy. Steve Mainini of Ventura, who passed his rider's test but an hour befOtt, finished second. Wednesday the ATC s. Odysseys. and go-brts take over the Ventura Raceway as they will every Wednesday night until September. • Results a..- King; 2. DIMt DeTompIo; HANDICAP MAIN: I. a..- King; 2. ~=-; 3.
