SPEEDWAY WEEK Penhall and Sandona score atlMS By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 12 Defending National Champion Bruce Penhall outdiced the field in the fint comer and went on to take the victory in the scratch and a piggyback ride back to the pits from a gorgeous trophy girl in front of a few thousand rans who wished they were 14 again. FIShback and Pmhall finished in a draw in the Match Race which was run in two rounds. Fishback won the first round which was run onJuttior Speedway bikes while Penhall won the other ponion whm the riders both used their own machines. Penhall again showed the class which has made him so popular with fans, officials and fellow riders as he presented John La Doucer and surprised referee Irwin Moon with copies of his new hard cover book. Penhall then stayed after the races to chat with fans and sign autographs at the T ·shin booth. On Apr. 19, seven-time National Champion Michael Bast will make his 1981 IMS debut. This time King was first out of the gate but being the pro that he is, Penhall took to the outside and won the race at the wire by a tire's width. The scratch semi fmal with Dubb Ferrell, Steve Bast, Dave DeTemple and Lance King was one of the best races of the night. Bast took the gate, but basically, all four were in tum one together. Coming out of turn four, it was Bast with DeTemple on his rear tire. Third and founh were Ferrell and King. The next lap, King took third, but the real battle was up front between Bast and DeTemple. Dave was close enough to almost get past at every turn, but Bast was totally unyeilding and at the wire it was Bast, DeTetnple, King and Ferrell. The Third Division main looked very much like a Second Division race. The riders came out of the gate fast and didn't totally lose it in tum one. The racing was good and it was an impressive win by Robert Pfeuing followed by Mike Baeder, Ed Castro, Steve Nonhrup, Mark Weaver and John Gant. Ftnoll; &.
