MaeCraeken does some DeAnza dIcIng By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAR. 15 It was another double win for Maloolm Smith's Eric MacCracken at DeAnza Cycle Park. Mac Cracken led a total of 60 laps of ... 34 racing on his way to four moto wins in the 250cc and Open Pro classes. In the 250cc class, it was Greg Zitterkopf (Yam) that came close to stopping MacCracken's domination. He pushed the leader for the first half of the first moto, then slowly began to lose time. He was still a fairly close second at the end of the ra.ce, but in the next moto a crash dropped him back to ruth place. Second went to Fred Combs while Zitterkopf still managed to take home third place money. Both Combs and Zitterkopf ride for Advanced Cycles. In the Open class, the only rider able to match MacCracken's pace was Moto-X Fox's David Gerig (Hus). Gerig only lacked a couple of seconds in both motos. Finishing third in both rounds was Eddie Michetti (Mai). The small-bore Pro class was topped by Rodney Brand on his Desert S.uzuki. He led all the way in both motos with Dale's Modern Cycle rider Randy Yetto (Yam) in second and Dave Rose (Suz) in third. The 250cc Intermediate class held a three-way battle for top honors. Kelly McGuire (Yam) led throughout moto one with Dale Ream (Yam) in a close ................ , . second. Rich Schumacher (Hus) was all by himself through most of the moto in third place. In the next round, Schumacher came back, grabbing an early lead and holding out for seven laps. McGuire and Ream started mid-pack and worked their way up together, passing Schumacher in the same spot. Once again, the results read McGuire, Ream and Schumacher. Starting on the same row as the Intermediates and beating them all in both motos was the only 250cc Expert, Kenny Campbell (C-A). Brad Fay (Hon) was top man in the 125cc Novice class. He diced with Chris Heinrich (Hon) in both rounds while Rick Roark (Kaw) added a little green to the scene by coming up from behind to finish third. Results s.n PEE WEE: 1. Hunt !Yom); 2. The Open class, which is usually quite small at Corona, was for a change the largest Pro class. But Mac Cracken had no trouble in getting the first moto holeshot. From there, he held the lead all the way home. Tom Browne (Yam) was in second until Greg Zitterkopf (Yam) took over on the second lap. Zitterkopf proved he could go at least as fast as MacCracken through the rest of the race, but several seconds separated them all the way. It was in the next moto that Zitterkopfwould have his chance. Mac Cracken was on top again, but Zitterkopf found a line into the lead on the second lap. In the meantime, John Greenway (Yam) was dicing with Jerry Black and Browne for the number three spot. Greenway, who hasn't raced at Corona Raceway in nearly a year, proved he could still manage the night course well enough to come out on top of the scrap. As the race went into the final lap, the order was Zitterfopf, MacCracken, Greenway, Browne and Black. Then MacCracken's pace picked up at the same time as Zitterkopf began to get careless. The result was a pass two turns before the finish giving the win to MacCracken. MacCracken had less trouble in the 260cc class where he led every lap of both motos. Andy Northrup (Hon), who had proven himself to be nearly unbeatable all year at Corona, announced that this would be his last Pro motocross ride as he turns to Speedway for the coming season. He put in a strong ride in the first moto on his aging Honda, finishing second. But he DNF in round two, leaving Fred Combs to nab the runner-up spot with a 5-2 ride. Keith Williamson (Yam) wasthird with a pair offourths. Although the high school motocross league ended last week, the first round of the two'part invitational championship was still held. Turner makes hIstory at CMC Saddlebaek MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, MAR. 15 The year was 1970 when Jim Wilson, riding a Greeves and a Zundapp equipment, won all three Professional classes at Saddleback Park. After a ll-year dry spell of no grand -slams in the Professional class, "Radical Ron" Turner turned in the big one at the IRC $!lOOO sponsored event. Riding three stock Suzuki floaters, Turner completely dominated the entire day. Last year Turner was one molO away from this same feat but a last minute surge by Rick Maki on the last turn at Saddleback dropped Turner to second place behind Maki. To add a little spice to the three class win, Turner won all six motos he had entered, This has never been done by any Professional rider. Quite a feat considering the competition. Sunday was a big day, IRC Tires put up the purse for the Pros and also paid by moto wins, but Turner did not spread tbe wealth. The track was in excellent shape and Banzai Hill was wed to add some additional excitement. In the Open Pro class, Ed Arnet (Mai) grabbed the holeshot in mot one with Yamaha's Pete Snortelan following. Don Griewe (Mai) and Mick Dymond (Yam) made up the top four. By lap three, Arnet had bailed an Snorteland was pulling Griewe and th field. In the middle of the pack, Turner was picking off other ride and on lap 10 he pulled up on thir place Dymond. By lap 12, Turner ha pushed Griewe ahead of Snortelan for the lead but Turner could sme the checkered flag and on the last lap side by side Turner muscled his wa into the lead and took the win. Griew was second over Snorteland, Dymond, Nevada's Kevin Davis (Mai) and Scot Johnson (Mai). In moto two, Turner was ahead 0 the pack by the first tum. Arnet w trailing Turner with Snorteland i third. Turner began to pull and th race was on for third. Amet had a tigh hold on second but Snorteland, John son, Griewe and Jennings were whee to wheel. Jennings was on the gas wit his 4S0 and passed all the front runner11 except Turner. Turner went awa with the win and had a 50-second lea over second place Jennings. Third wa Arnet followed by Snorteland, Johnso
