It was a gorgeous day at Woodland's motocross track. The tint Pro class out was the Open class which was combined with the Open Intermediate riden. The Pros scratched fint led by Chris Washburn (Yam) and Rowdy Blasdell (Hus). As fast as you could bat an eye, Blasdell dropped behind Barney Newman (Yam) and Monte Mitchell (Mai) and within another lap was off the track for some quick handling repain. He missed a couple of laps in the process. Meanwhile, Washburn and Newman went off on a chase of their own. Time after time, Newman was close enough to make a move but a bobble here and a lapped rider there kept him in second to the end. In the second round, Blasdell had the handling under control and was never challenged for the lead. Newman came off the line in second and held off an early push from Washburn be· fore Washburn tangled with an Inter· mediate rider and went down. Mitchell moved up to take over the second spot midway through, but Newman got a second wind and moved back up for the overall win. Rick Wylder (Kaw) dominated the Intermediate class with double wins ahead of Gary Bonds (Hon). Jim Anderson (Yam) and Blasdell led the 250cc Pro class, but on the sec· ond lap, Anderson dumped it to drop himself to the back and start a very atypical day for Jim. Steve Smith (Yam) held second for a couple of laps before being forced to retire with a broken scoot. Phil Oveland (Yam) held second just ahead of the charging Anderson, but after two laps Oveland yielded. Anderson was now on Blasdell's tail, but he clipped a post and became entangled in the bannen. Blasdell just rode off to the flag all alone. Oveland was second and Bruce Irwin (Hon) fin· ished third. Anderson, Blasdell and Oveland led the second moto. Blasdell nagged at Anderson for a while then moved on by. Suddenly, Anderson appeared to remember why he was out there and began charging. Blasdell held off the charge successfully for a while but final· ly yielded. The frrst l25cc Pro moto was led by Gary Harkleroad (Yam) and Duane Morris (Yam), a relatively new Pro at Woodland. Anderson was on the line long after everyone else left after getting tangled in the gate. Anderson's charge through the pack was quick and spec' tacular. Morris moved to the lead on the fifth lap, pushed by Anderson who took the lead a lap later and built it up. Anderson's bike then began to run rough and suddenly Morris and Oveland were hounding him. The three came through the whoops at the finish side by side. These whoops can send a single rider whipping around out of control. Andenon and Oveland were funnelled in to make Morris the jam in the sandwich and send flagmen, photo· graphen and ogglen scurrying. Every' one survived intact but there could have been a big question if it had been the last lap. They were too close to call it with any certainty. On the next trip around Morris was the unquestioned leader and he stayed there. Oveland was second. Anderson third. • Anderson led the second moto but his day ended just as it began - with problems. After two laps his Yamaha was done. Morris led the rest of the way. Oveland moved by Harkleroad a third of the way into the moto. They stayed that way to the flag. It was nice to see a couple of faces from out of the past panicipating again. Ron Dimeo (Hon) took home a fourth· place trophy in U5cc Intermediate and Dana McKee (Yam) earned third in l25cc Junior.
