MIIrty Miller 191 dices with another rieler lit Corone'. night mot~...
Scott Manning duplicat~ his brother's act by pulling the 250cc Pro holeshot. Jim Tarantino (Hon) soon moved
into second and stan~ pushing Manning. Tarantino took the lead a lap
later and slightly pull~ away. At the
halfway point, Scott Gillman (Yam)
mov~ into second place and put in.a
strong drive to catch Tarantino. Soon,
however, he began to slack off.
Coming up from t~e rear was Greg
Zitterkopf (Yam) wit!,! Juan Benavidez
(C-A), who had start~ about !lOth
place. The two of them were locked in
a battle that carried them past Many
Miller (Yam), Manning and Gillman
into second and third place. When the
checkered flag came out Tarantino
had a slight lead over Benavidel, Zitterkopf, Gillman and Manning.
In the 125cc Pro class, Premier
Yamaha rider Doug Dubach was top
man. Early contenders Brent Blount
(Suz) and Craig Dale (SUl) dropped
out with mechanical troubles, while
Roger Hensley (SUl) rode his way up
through the pack to finish second over
John Savitslti (Yam).
Dennis Wooldridge (Hon) pun~
the holeshot in the 250cc Intermediate
race, but soon surrend~ the lead to
Gary Schriedler (Yam) who held it all
the way home. Scott Conaway (Yam)
moved into second place and was also
uncha1len~ for the rest of the race.
The battle for third, however, was hot.
Kenny Campbell (C·A) finally came
out on top.
At the end of the day it was time for
the fun event, the team race. For an
hour and a half, two riders would switch
possession of tbe same bike until all
three were worn out. Coming out easily
on top were tbe Manning brothers,
Scott and Troy. They even had
enough time to stop at the first aid
station at the halfway point to repon a
d~ rider in a back section of the
track.
HI,h school finale
at Corona MX
By Ron uwson
CORONA, CA, MAR. 6

The high school showdown between the Inland League's two
biggest teams, North and Red·
lands, came to a climax in the
last race of the HSMX season. The two
teams, both former champions, had
been dicing it out all year long at
Corona Raceway and the 1981 cham.•
pionship was to be decided in the last
race.
The classic match of the night was
in the 250cc Senior class. Two Redlands riders, Tom Hodgin (Suz) and
Mike Edson (Yam), were up against
Nonh representative John Mallacane
(Kaw). Mallacane was the first man
out of the hole, but on the first lap
Hodgin passed him. Edson hung back
in third for several laps, then came
alive, passing both den and taking
the lead for himself. As the race came
into its final laps, Mallacane drew a
second breath and repassed Hodgin,
then gained dramatically on Edson.
The race ended, however, before Mallacane couLd totally displace the R~
landsteam.
In the next moto, Mazzacane pulled
another holeshot, but this time he
didn't let anyone by. Hodgin remained
in second throughout the race while
Edson had trouble and finished a
distant third. That gave Nonh their
second win of the night. The first had
beeil in the l00cc Intermediate class
where Tony Martinez t~ Redlands
rider Geno Reynola. Ken Wilson,
James Conti, and Gary Dent all contribut~ wins to the Nonh cause, putting
them on' top with !l69 poin~ to R~
Lands' 345.
The division for smaLLer teams came
down to the wire also, between Esperaoza and Arlington. At the end of the
night the two tearns were tied in league
points, but tbe nod went to Esperanza
because of more individual wins
throughout the year. The Esperanza
wins of the night went to David NeviLLe
and Joel Johns.
A great 250cc Pro duel ended witb
Eric MacCracken taking another win
on his Malcolm Smith Yamaha. Marty
Miller (Yam) and Greg Zitterkopf (Yam)
put up battles, but the final results
were the same in both motOl, Mac
Cracken, Zitterkopf and Miller.
The 125cc Pro first moto had Brent
Blount (SUl) and Rick Rodgers (SUl)
run away with the lead while Gary
Denton (SUl) overcame trouble to fin·
ish third. In the next moto it was
Denton on top all the way while Blount
DNF and Rodgers took another second.
OveraLL tbe results read Denton,
Rodgers, Micky Dymond (Yam) and
Jack Scott (Yam).

was forced to retire. That gave the

In the 125cc Pro ranks, Rick Jackson

Cates l~ almost all of the first round

early lead and Cates making the pass

Eddie Michetti (Mai) collected a
long overdue Open Pro win at
DeAnza Cycle Park. It was a
strong Maico showing as Michetti
grabbed the first holeshot with Dan
Paulson (Mai) in second over Yamahamount~ Anhur Clever and Joe Stem
(Mai). It remain~ in that orcler all the
way through the race with Michetti
cruising in to a strong lead over
Paulson.
The next round beld more of the
same. Michetti was on top all the way,
but this time Clever finished second
over Paulson.
Eddie's father Ed Michetti hit a high
point also, taking the holeshot in the
Senior Vets class. He l~ for two laps,
then a sticlting rear brake lever COlt
him two positions as George Anderson
(SUl) and Paul Wilde (Yam) sbot by.
Getting a poor stan and then crashing
was DeAOla Vets champion Ron
Brehm (Yam). But Brehm slowly stan·

the pack. On lap four be palled Michet·
ti, then he went after the leaders.
While Brehm was making up time,
Wilde was working on Anderson. Lap
five saw the lead switch bands and instantly Wilde staned to pull a smaLL
lead, but soon he found that Brehm
was clOling in. In the remaining Laps
Brehm tried to find an opening, but
tbe checkers came out before he could
make his move.
Michetti again pulled the boLeshot

They swarm and attack every
month. Although the innocent
community of Corona, California
is given ample warning, there is
nothing that can be done to stop the
invasion of the mini thumpers. Scien·
tists are baffled by this phenomenon;
how can aging XR 755 be made to carry
their overweight and overa~ riders
around six laps of a track with sections
so tough that professional motocloesels
have difficulty? Nevenhless, the XRs
and their riders show up every month
for Malcolm Smith/Tour and Trail

This time it was a familiar sight out
in front, as Scott Wilkinson and his
wbite Honda pull~ out to an early
lead. In second place in the early laps
was Rick Atkins, but soon he dropped
out and handed the position to Mike
Word. In the back of the pack, both
Andy Northrup and Richard Hoffman
had ~tten off to bad starts, but were
pushing their way up fast. By the halfway point they were in third and
founh where they were to finish.
The next race was a repeat of the
first. This time, however, Hoffman
was able to pass Nonhrup in order to
net third place.. Wilkinson was again
the winner and received the lion's
share of the award goodies.
On the Pro side of the street it was
consistency that paid off. Advanc~
Cycle rider Greg Zitterkopf (Yam)
nai~ down the overaLL 250cc win with
a pair of second places. The first moto
saw Andy Nonhrup (Hon) lead every
lap with Eric MacCracken (Yam) in
bot pursuit. Fr~ Combs (Yam) was in
third in the early laps with Zitterkopf,
Scott Wilkinson (HOD) and Marty Miller
(Yam) chasing. Zitterkopf mov~ past
