...... 00 0') ...... The odds were against him going into the final round, but Terry Poovey (right) took Babe DeMay to winner's eirel.lInd collected $10,000. Harlel-Davidson Dirt Track Series Poovey • WIns, cops big bucks By Henny Ray.Abrams DAYTONA BEACH, FL, MAR. 7 Texan Terry Poovey won the final' round of the nine event $72,000 Harley-Davidson Dirt Track Series and with it the 22 $10,000 top prize. Poovey trailed Gary Scott by 18 points coming into the race and could only win the series if he won the race and Scott didn't qualify. In true storybook fashion, that's exactly what happened. Scott finished sixth in his semi, with only the top three going to the main. In the main Poovey, on the AI Lamb Honda/Shoei/Bel·Ray/ Babe DeMay tuned Honda CR·250 got the holeshot and withstood the pressure of Billy Labrie for the entire race. Labrie finished third in the points race. Scott took the $5,000 second place prize. "I just had everything going for me tonight," Poovey said. "I just have a lot of good help in Babe DeMay, AI Lamb and make sure to mention my brother Teddy." Right off the start there was a sense of excitement in the air as Poovey won the first of 20 scratch heats. Gary Scott on the KK Motorcycle Supply/Jack Sisemore Traveland bike started third in the third scratch heat, but moved up to win. Poovey's heat was the fastest. The "Pooh Bear" came right back in the fust of the eight elimination heats and took the win. Labrie took the second and fastest heat. In the fourth heat, Billy Schaeffer romped to the win, but Gary Scott had to pass people to finish fourth, thereby guaranteeing himself a second row start in the semi. Labrie, on the Daytona International Speedway/Fletcher's H· D Honda won the fust semi by a quarter of a lap over Steve Morehead and Greg Tysor. The second semi was a slam·bang affair with three different leaders, but when all the bumping was done Mickey Fay had beaten Billy Scott had been the uncontested master of the holeshot all series long, but for the last two nights he was a bit off form and started last in the field often. Although he would move up to sixth, he was out for an anxious rught of spectating. Wayne Rainey, Schaeffer and Steve Hall transferred to the main. Poovey vanished from the field in 'the fourth and fastest semi with Scon Drake and Bubba Shobert chasing. The holeshot in the final belonged to Poovey with Labrie second ahead of Morehead and Herndon. Labrie pressured for the entire ten laps, but couldn't find his way around Poovey and had to settle for second in the race and third in the points standings. "No I don't have a sad taste," Labrie replied to the announcer's question. "I started winning the last couple of races. When you don't make the first two races it's not tOO bad." Labrie missed the finals of the first two races at Jacksonville with ignition troubles. He collected $2,250 for the third place finish. Finishing third in the race was Mike Kidd/America Honda sponsored Billy Herndon. Since Herndon is a junior he is ineligible for series points and bad to settle for the third place prize money for the race. "My brakes went out on the first lap," said Herndon. "I didn't think I was going to make it." The rider Herndon passed for third was fourth place [iDisher Steve Morehead. Morehead finished fifth in the final point tally. "I made eight out of nine main events," the KK Motorcycle Supply/ Cyclear Fairing/Diamond Bill/D's Leathers sponsored "Findlay Flash" said. "I'm not that good of a rr rider so I'll take that." But the night belonged to Poovey who shared some plans with the sell·out crowd. ''I'm going to call my wife. She'll be real happy," Poovey said." I'm going to get me a house now. " Poovey admitted he didn't think he had a chance of winning the top prize. after the Thursday night rr which put Scott 26 points ahead. But Scott didn't score a single point the final two nights and the victory went to Poovey. When did Poovey think he had the race and series in the bag? "I never did," said Poovey. • Results 1. Hank Scott hotinST By Henny Ray Abrams DAYTONA BEACH, FL, MAR. 6 Hank Scott on the KRW/Team Jesus/Jack Sisemore Traveland/ RPM Yamaha short tracker won the first night of short track racing as his brother, Gary, watched from the sidelines. Hank got the holeshot and held off a late lap charge from the winner the past two nights, Mickey Fay. For third place finisher Steve Hall it was a first appearance in the winner's circle in the H·D Dirt Track Series. Although Gary SCOtt could mathematically have clinched the $10,000 top prize tonight, he failed to get out of the scratch heats, finishing tbird to Hall and Ervin Smith. Second place in points Billy Labrie also didn't make the program as. he finished fourth in his semi with only the top three advancing to the point paying main. Taking over second in the points was Terry Poovey, who's seventh place finish put him 18 points behind Scott with one race left. If SCOtt qualifies for the main tomorrow night he has the title automatically, since Poovey could only come within one point of Scott by winning. Labrie's night started out wrong as he finished second in his scratch heat. Then in his heat race he was thrown in with fOUT other National numbers and a top junior. He finished founh giving him a back row stan in his semi. Scon's fast heat time put him on the pole in the first semi. As the pack hit the first turn Scott was hit and went down hard with Scott Parker running over his back wheel while he was still under it. After a few minutes he got up, but may not have been up to form as he finished second to Billy Herndon but ahead of RonnieJones. The second semi was red-flagged when Terry Poovey bumped Bubba Shobert who went down in turn three. As soon as the red flag came out Labrie, who was running back in the field, came into the pits and changed sprockets. It was to no avail, howeveT, as he could only muster a fourtb place finish behind Billy Schaeffer, Fay and Poovey. The third semi didn't have the excitement of the first two as Steve Hall on tbe Esprit/Klotz/ Bauer's Cycle Yamaha wired the field. Greg Tysor, a novice winner here two years ago, took the fourth and final semi. The word around the pits before the race was to watch out for Hank Scott if he got the holeshol. Hank disappointed no one as he was first to the narrow, black groove with Fay, Tysor and Herndon on his rear fender. Tysor and Herndon slipped off the groove and Steve Hall took advantage of it to bolt into third. "I was just having a great time. I was enjoying every minute of it," third place Hall said. Up' front, Fay was mounting a late lap charge, but Scott never looked back and got his first series points since the first race of the series at Jacksonville. The first person to greet Hank in the winner's circle was his brother Gary. "That was beautiful. Way to go, Buddy," Gary said to Hank. "Nothing's been going right down here, but I didn't let it get me down. I want to thank the Lord. The Lord never forsakes," said SCOtt. "I knew if I rode that line they couldn't catch me." "I got kind of a bad start," said Fay. "It would have been three in a row." • Results 1. Hank Scott !Yam); 2. Micilav Fay (Hon); 3. S _ Hall (Yam); 4. Billy Herndon IHon); S. Greg Tvsa IC-A); 6. Second win to Fay By Henny Ray Abrams DAYTONA BEACH, FL, MAR. 5 For the second night in a row Micky Fay of Auburn, Washington, won the Memorial Stadium TT. The Roger Stanley sponsored/American Honda supported rider once again swept to the fast times in every race that he
