behind Kelly Moran and Curoso. After nine events the U.S. overseas team had a 34~-19~ lead. (The ~ point came from dividing the lead points in the dead heat.) Christian broken the tapes at the start of event 10 and was ready to return to the pits when Penhall requested that Alan be allowed to stay. The officials consented and Penhall went on to take his only victory of the day with Christian also picking up his best finish ending up second. Schwaru, who had also won event eight, took event II after Ferrell was sent to the pits for breaking the tapes and causing a red flag. Reserve riders Dave DeTemple and Larry Kosta also caused a red when they crashed in tum one on lap one. Reserve rider Denny Pyeatt and Schwartz then crashed in tum three Yo bile the red was out for Kosta and DeTemple. All were able to continue with Schwaru ending up the easy victor. Kelly Moran closed out the preliminaries by taking event 12 over Curosa, Fishback and Oxley. The score at the end ofthe preliminaries was U.S. overseas team 45~, U.S. home team 26~. The main event brought together the two top point men from each team. Schwaru was on the pole and immediately assumed the lead over King, Fishback and Curoso. Schwaru had a comfortable lead when he got some traction and did a wheelie in four and another on the front chute at the end of lap two allowing King to close in. King almost snuck by on the inside, but Schwaru was able to shut the door in turn one on lap three. Schwaru hung on the rest of the way with King a close second followed by Fishback and Curoso. Craig Schaefer took the win in the exciting Handicap main. Shane Hawley, who took the victory Friday at Costa Mesa, jumped out front at the start. Keith Larsen was running second when he lost it in tum four on the opening lap forcing John Sandona into a pretty laydown and causing a red flag. On the restart, Hawley again took control with Dennis Bransford taking second until Phil Gagnon got him at the line for second at the end of lap one. Schaefer took third at the end of lap two and moved to the inside to challenge Gagnon for second. Schaefer and Gagnon sandwiched Hawley as they blasted by him going into tum one on lap four. Schaefer came out first with Gagnon right behind and Hawley dropping to the back of the pack with problems. Schaefer was able to hold off Gagnon over the final two laps for the victory with Sandona third, Bransford picking up fourth ahead of Hawley and Larsen who got credit for sixth. Jimmy Busby made an impressive showing in Junior Speedway as he moved from the 30-yard line to take the victory over Craig Hancock, Jordan Duncan, Ronnie Corey, Trennan Cirello and Jessie Finch. A fine gesture was shown by Bruce Penhall, Bobby Schwaru and Schinman and Associates (Dave De Temple's sponsor) as each donated $20 for first, $10 for second and $5 for third in the Junior Speedway main. Can-Am's John Martin is very determined. In 1980, John won the Indiana Black Coal. placed 3rd overall in the National standings and came within a mindslip of ISDT Gold in France. What John Martin has done so far is impressive. But even more impressive is the way that he does it. By himself. Without platoons of factOry support .... people. But with one very is pretty much like any you could buy: Marzocchi forks; Sun rims; bulletproof Bombardier-Rotax engine. Things that mean a lot when you have to wrench for yourself. "If I wasn't a sponsored rider~ says John Martin, "not much would be different for me. I'd still pick the same bike to ride~ Are we seriously suggesting that, with a little money and a lot of determination, even aprivateer has a good chance at a National Enduro title? ,...
