"California, one and two," yelled the "Simi Flash," Pete Hames, after he topped fellow Californian David Rosa on the first night of short track racing at Memorial Stadium. Hames, who has won all three main events that he has made while in Florida, grabbed the holeshot on his Bill's Pipes/Corona Raceway sponsored. Jack Dannenberg tuned Kawasaki and pulled steadily away from Rosa and third place man Kurt Hanford of Fort Lauderdale. Florida. The program got under way with a familiar face winning the first of eight heats. Hames, of Simi Valley, California, took the first heat, which Jooked like it might be the fastest, until the final heat which Tim Houghton won on a Yamaha. Houghton came right back to take the first semi and a direct transfer to the main. William Peru took the second semi, Kurt Hanford the third, and the fourth and fastest was won by Hames. On the narrow groove Memorial Stadium track the start's the thing and nobody knew it better than Hames. Hames went out to the front in his now familiar fashion and just pulled away from the pack. Behind Hames, David Rosa was holding the Don's Plumbing of Concord, California/LC . Racinl{ sponsored, Harry Lillie tuned Yamaha barely ahead of Kurt Hanford on the Phil Peterson's H-D/ND sponsored, Jeff Clawson prepared bike. "It's pretty tough, but it's slick on the insieit-," Rosa said. "But it's a fun track. It·s the best one I've ridden since I've been here." Hames concurred. "It's fun, it's a blast. That's the first time I rode ·against him," Hames said of his fellow Californian. Hames would have to face the Juniors the next night and what did he think his chances were?
