E • TEN YEARS ~ E AGO J.N. Roberts and Max Switzer took their 400 Husky across nine hours and 54 minutes worth of prime Nevada desert to win the Mint 400, ending a two·year win streak by Yamaha pilots Mike Patrick and Phil Bowers. Malcolm Smith and L.E. JohanllllOn finished second on a 250 Husky, while DeWayne and Gary Jones placed third on a 250 Yamaha. Patrick and Bowers were fourth. The most unusual entry was a full·on - extended front end, sissy bar, the works - Triumph chopper ridden. by Jim Connolly and Richard Sieman. Super Hunky? CZ·mounted Brad Lackey, still riding with handlebar·mounted peace dove and shoulder length hair, took the 250cc and Open Expert classes in a motocroas at Puyallup, W A. Giving a MXGP preview, Washington's Jim Pomeroy (Bul) battled with Lackey before settling for second in the 250cc and third in the Open class. John DeSoto (CZ) also battled with the leaders in the Open class, but illness kept him down to fifth at the finish. The Long Beach City Council made fmal its ban on motorcycle and mini· cycle riding on private or public land, unless written pennission had been granted. The council gave noise as the \ major reason for their action. A week earlier the council approved the use of Long Beach Airport for commercial aircraft, despite a vehement protest by residents living near the airport. Lane Leavitt topped a P.I.T.S. observed trials in northern California, dropping only seven marks through 30 sections. Paul Oll'iges was three dabs back for second. AMA 0·37 hare scrambles, it still came down to a drag race to the finish for first overall between Whitey Martino and Larry Pfuuenreuter. Martino (Hus) got the nod by an ultra ·slim margin, with second overall, first 250cc, going to the Bultaco·mounted Pfuuenreuter. Ron Salzman finished third overall, first Amateur. ...... A preview of Bruce Brown's film On Any Sunday played to enthusiastic reviews.
