Northern california-Northern Neved.Oregon-Wuhlngton-ldaho-Uteh-AIuka- NORTHERN DATELINE The section between checks six and seven was another tight one and served as the tie breaker with everyone late. Occasionally, the pace let up and the riders were able to enjoy the spectacular vista of snowy peaks around them . Section seven to eight contained more new trail and a much-talkedabout ~caJ IO-foot drop into a creek, a section that only Clizbe and Morgen· thaler zeroed. The course continued on at a 13 mph average over varied conditions to the finish. Lyle Duronso did an excellent job of organizing the event by using the rule book to challenge the mind while the course challenged the body as 37 of the 82 staners finished the 77 -mile course. Unfonunat.ely, Lyle had bike problems while sweePing the course and missed his awards pr~ntation. The top A team contained a B rider and the trophy was held for a decision from Lyle. Top B team was a Mt. Baker entry consisting of Augie Kooistra. Dan Wilbur and Larry Milne. ...... 00 ~ ...... Results A ClASS: 1. S _ Church lSI; 2. Ron CIizbe (5); 3. Concessions were furnished by the Lion's Club and fine trophies were built by Judy and friends at Shin Jazz of Reno. In the Open Expen clash, Jeff Cloutier (son of Rokon Gator) got some KTM white on Tony Berluti's Yamaha before coming up with the II victory. The Open Junior confrontation found Dan DOSlIe}' the winner (also a second in the 125cc class) with Kevin Brown and Tim Dyer in hot pursuit. Yamahas reigned in the oneand-a-quarter Junior and Expert battles with Rick Delcarlo and Robbie Hadlock topping their respective cJa.-s. Mark Maninmaas proved, as he has done before, that 500cc thumpers are not dead by squeezing out the Open Novice win over ring-a-ding-mounted Loren Caudle. In the 250cc Novice action, John Moore, H. Caner, Richard Shon and Steve Cano got the bralil. In the 51-man 125cc class, James (soon to be bumped) Morningstar won with Steve Brown giving him some trouble. The Mini guys' results showed Troy Newman, Chad Corron and Matt Hawk receiving the 80cc Novice trophies with Brett Flory and Randy Kay the Junior and Expen glory. The l00cc Novice brass was collected by Tracy Lund on a Suzuki. These minialUre mighties deserve a lot of credit for conquering the big bike whoops with their pee wee suspensions. The Geritol races saw Redgie Mull charging up his pacemaker and flying to a I-I Veteran Expen victory with lap times within 10 seconds of the sportsman Experts. Tim Greene. present prez of the OTHG, got the second-place spot on his Maico, but ate an anltJe on the way (Scott boots anyone?). Ray Smedes captured the VeteranJunior honors. In the II·man Novice race, Ron Rippi and Jon Dupratt played choochoo both motos until Dupratt faded with beard rot. In the "death-warmedover" clashes, Jerome White rode his Swedish steed to the Old Timer Expert win and Bob Bogue took the Old Timer Junior first place on his Maico. V.C.'s Tim Fiupatrick, Sr. held a good lead both motos to snatch the Old Timer Novice victory with Jim Helming of Austin taking home the second place brass on his Kaw. Also seen attempting to come out of retirement was Bob Cavaltis of the Winnemucca Flying W Club, but the beer and hard 1iving did him in rapidly (two more Flying W races are coming up Mar. 15 and Apr. 5). Hermalene Wick gets the "iron bra" award for riding four motos (Vet &. OTHG). although she was last heard muttering incoherently about the advantages of foo-fooness and dishpan hands. Also, speaking of the XX chromosome set, Jenni Miles was looking good banging ban with the 125cc berserkos and will be ready for the Women's National. Results OPEN EX: 1. J. Clout. (KTMI; 2. T. Double opener at Hills Ferry IT By Bill Spencer NEWMAN, CA, FEB. 21-22 Opening the short track season in the middle of February in northern California seems a bit odd, but the two at Hills Ferry Speedway were successful in both weather and turnout with a beautifully clear Saturday night and delightful, warm Sunday for the quarter-mile din oval. Competition appears to be better than eYer with few riders winning double events. W~ many of the Mini kids now riding the big bikes, the caliber of competition is greatly enhanced. In lOOcc Expen Saturday, a few more bikes showed up, but it was Winkie Freitas the winner just like before, along with Kurt Chandler back for his first run since the horrendous crash at Lodi back in September. Craig Johnson led off the main but got palled by the two big-time Black Platers. That shouldn't last all that long as Johnson has style. The biggie for Mini kids is still 80cc Expen and it is one of the most hotly contested events across the country. When the National comes up in M.ichi· gan later in the year. the NorCal contingent should be well represented as it has been in the past. Winkie Freitas took the double header for the night with a great drive around Dean Vincelet (both on Salinas Kawasakis) while Scott Casey took third. P.). Sanchez gave up the Minis and went right out to win the 250cc Novice c1asII on a Bob's Garage Kaw with IlouIt
