Dillon, who recently' turned 21, is extremely fast and a rea1 athlete. As soon as he develops some more desen savvy, he will be very hard to beat. Third overall and first 250cc Expert was "old man" Dale Demaris. Demaris, who is well over 30, was plagued with bike troubles in 1980 and seems to have them soned out now. Demaris is still a potential winner whether it is a desert race, a mud run or a reliability trial. Results OVERALL: 1. Brad Tu",idge (KTMI; 2. Ron Dillon (Yom); 3. D.... Demoris IHue); 4. Hudkins and Holly team up and haul for Cascade win By Larry Ulrich BEND. OR. FEB. 14 The Cascade M, C. held their annual two·day desert event on the long three·day weekend of Washington's birthday or Presi· dent's day or whatever you call it. Today's team race staned the weekend and 93 teams signed up. Each team member was to ride three laps on a 12· mile coune and change riders each lap. They were flagged off at noon and then the Amateurs were lined up. This was supposed to be a dead engine, banner stan. Everyone had their engines off and were waiting for one rider to do a 30-second repair when the wind made the banner twitch and everyone was gone. First rider in at the end of lap one was Grant Hudkins on a 390 Husky, lap time 11 minutes. That's a 65 mph average. That's damn fast when you consider he stopped at two checkpoints, went through a couple of slow comers and negotiated some 30 mph sand dunes. After the first lap, Hudkins' panner Alan Holly took over the riding chores aboard his new Honda 250 waterpumper. A well-known Husky rider was heard to say that this Honda can stay with a 390 Husky on this flat Millican Valley coune. On this shon coune, it is much more of a spectator event than the usual desen race. When the riders come in. they must change armbands. Some riders ride their own bike. while some use just one bike and switch riders. There is a lot of excitement watching the riders change. More than once, you could see riders sliding in and falling off their bikes, then hold· ing up their arm while the pit crew took the armband to give to the other team member. At this team race you will see all kinds of riders teamed up, Amateurs and Experts, Old Timers and Amateurs. etc. It is an Oregon Motorcycle Riders Assn. points race, but it just pays 10 points for finishing toward your normal class. Tl.e riders don't take this race very seriously. It's a lot of fun and the thought is to finish for the points. At the end, it was Hudkins and Holly followed by Cliff Humbard and David Monon. As mentioned earlier. the Amateun tuned .bout five minutes after the Experts. Right up there in 14th overall was the Amateur team of Lyle Klenski and Jim Harris. They came in right ahead of two top desen Experts - Tom Lillis and Dale Demaris. Steve Henry and Curtis Dice of Idaho took first Lightweight Expert and Brett Kindall and Tim Leeche of Reno took first Lightweight Amateur. Vern McCall and Jim Watts of the Ponland area showed up a lot of the kids by taking 21st overall and flI"St Old Timer. Watts was riding a new water-cooled Yamaha 125. Brad Grosbeck and Wendell Gump took first in the Beginners class in 41st over· all to beat a lot of "non-Beginners." 00 0') Results TEAM RACE: 1. Gron! HudkinsiAlen HolIv (HW Ex); 2.
