Northern California-Northern Neveda-Oregon-Washington'IcIeI»U~AIIIsk NORTHERN DATEUNE Wargo s mok es at SHR S Unday MX By Sally Sideliner ...... 00 BRENTWOOD, CA, FEB. 15 ...... Not even the gorgeous blue sky could outshine Bryan Wargo's Yamaha as he swept two Expert classes on his 125 and 250. All 0') four motos belonged to Bryan from the first tum to the checkers. Ron Coombs kept his 250 Kawasaki in front of Jerry Brandt's Yamaha throughout the 250cc race, but was no threat to Bryan. Dieter Klausing and Ray Flow pulled away in 125cc Novice Division Il with Rich Tiegel and Dorene Payne's Yamahas a good distance back. A fall by Ray cleared the way for the two Yamahas and Dorene showed she could ride with the men. Dieter holeshot the second moto again and four Yamahas took. home the points. Dorene placed second overall with Tiegel and Dave Laurents close behind. But Dorene wam't through for the day. After the first lap of 250cc Novice, she kept the lead from Sid Frankasky's Yamaha and took the overall win. Congratulationsl Division II of 250cc Novice was holeshot by Ken Klein the first moto with Mark Ibbotson waiting close by for a chance to pass. However, the chance never came in the first mota and Ken held onto his lead. In mota two, Ibbotson took the lead after the first lap and continued to hold his position for first overall, Ken settling for second. Kimo Casey riding for Supercycle in Concord took the lead through the first turn in 250cc Junior and wasn't about to wait for anyone. A 17-second lead held throughout the moto as Eric Conrad manuevered his Yamaha through the pack for second place. A pileup on the first turn of moto two brought Eric out in first. Mike Randal second and Kimo in fifth. These positions held for four laps and Kimo began to move. He passed founh and third place on the straightaway, but Randal ,wasn't about to give up his second. Randal used both sides of the track to keep Kimo from going by and finally a superb block pass on the bottom of the downhill gave Kimo second on the last lap. Not enough time was left to catch Eric who took home first overall. That stack of Cycle News piled over In the corner could become an attractive addition to your living room or trophy shelf. However, there was no mud and there were no complaints about the lack of it. As the ga te fell for the first race, the top six around the bend were all Vets led by Ron Long (Suz)/Dick Rolli (KTM), Larry Sause (Hon)/Neil Roman (Yam), Bob Knox (Yam)/Vem McCall (Yam) and Gary Bonds (Hon)/ Jim Wood (Hon). The top small bike riders were loner Bruce Barnes (Hon), Keith Foidel (Yam)/Mike Hauskins (Yam) and Mike Chase (Kaw), also alone. Long continued the lead for four laps before he dropped back to the tail of the pack. By the ninth lap, the Hanskins/Foidel team was at the top with Chase not far behind. Behind them. the pressure was comi~ through the pack in the father/ son team of John and Dale Semmler. Dale was aboard to put fust Chase and then Foidel/Hau.skins behind them. John took over to give Dale a breather- and both Foide1/Hau.skins and Chase went by. Dale came out and climbed back through a string of lapped riders to get back out in front. The last four laps were a close battle between Dale and the FoidellHauskins team. Semmler had it at the flag. Chase was back a little ways in third. All three had lapped everyone including the Bond/Wood Vet first-place team. The second race was also led by Long/Rolli, Bonds/Wood, Sause/Roman and Dick Burgett/Jim Newman (Yam). The first small bike was Chase with Foidel/Hauskins on his tail. The FoidellHauskins team moved into the lead on the ninth lap as the Longl Rolli team began to fade badly. Just about that time, the Semmler team moved up again and the Hauskins/ Foidel team began to fade enough to be lapped just past the halfway mark. Chase was in second, but far enough back to give John plenty of room as he took the checkered. The Bonds/Wood team added another ace in front of Knox and McCall. When the big bikes came out, there were 36 teams and it soon became a lap counter's nightmare. Some numbers were undecipherable to start with. Other numbers which were hastily applied to cold number plates began to fall off. Just when the lap counters would decide the guy with the wan on the end of his nose was number 666. he'd switch to his partner and there'd be a new mystery. It was a relief that the lead remained unchanged through the 41 laps. (ton Sun (Hon) led off and set a pace no one could touch for 45 minutes before he turned to teammate Kevin Jansen (Kaw) to carry the ba.nner well to the flag. Loners Rick Burgett (Yam), Mantey Mitchell (Mai) and Rowdy Blasdell (Hus) followed Sun out of the gate. Burgett held second at the end in spite of a gas stop and some brake failure. The Rick Wylder (Kaw)/ Barney Newman (Yam) team pulled up to third for most of the race not too far ahead of the Jeff Morrow (Kaw)/ Jeff Talbot (Hon) team. Loner Mark Hambleton (Hus) pulled up from a 20th spot on the first lap to finish fifth. Mitchell and Burgett led the charge in the second round, but Mitchell went down right in the line Sun was aimed for and Sun laid it down, too. A whole bunch of riders were tied up while Burgett, Blasdell, Newman and Hambleton went on their way. Sun was near the end of the pack when he got moving. Burgett and Blasdell put on a good show for a while with Blasdell moving into the lead. Burgett was forced to retire when the brake problem returned and his rear tire went flat. Blasdell, too, would retire after half the race from sheer exhaustion. Sun earned his way to the front for a few laps before turning it over to Jansen. Newman/ Wylder held second until Wylder spilled late in the race and woefully watched the Talbot/Morrow bike go by before Newman could take over. • Results MINI: 1. Jolt Mileo (Yoml; 2.
