Elledgeanet Dunlap decimate Bushriders GP By Dick Thompson OLYMPIA, WA, FEB. 8 Yamalia, Pace Management and the Seattle Times made it enjoyable for the Black Hill Dirtriders Motorcycle Club to put on an exciting grand prix. Hats off to the Thurston-Grays Harbor ORV officials for their assistance in establishing an excellent course through the hills, trees, meadows, creeks and MX track of the ORV park. Every rider received a T-shirt, Supercross ticket and an en· joyable but challenging ride. The Brush Light class was the first one out on the course for a full 90 minutes. Mike Jesner left no doubt who was going to win this one, but the most interesting ride was put on by Tad Richards. Richards was plagued by mechanical problems and dropped from second on the first lap down to sixth, but somehow managed ta keep it running and moved back up to second by the checkered. At the finish, it was Jesner on an IT, Richards, Ron Gray and Floyd Saunders. With approximately 50 entries thundering off in the Brush Heavy (201cc up) class, it caught everyone's attention. Mickey Dunlap turned in a blistering 10: 10 lap. Mickey riding for Paulsons, led from wire to wire with Dean Biddle in second and Dan Johnson in third after the demanding go-minute ride. In the Motocross Light class (0200cc), Bill Joyce on a Honda showed everyone he not only knew the fastest way around a motocross track, but also through the brush. Joyce led the race from start to fmish. Blaine Elledge had a strong ride going in second, but ran inta mechanical problems and had to pull out. At the checkered it was Joyce, Eric Hall and Jim Mix. The Motocross Heavy class proved to be the climax of the day. The last race of the day had nearly 60 entries in it. Some of the Northwest's finest riders were there. The green flag dropped for the Le Mans start and it was Elledge out in front with Doug Raines, Buck Murphy and Mickey Dunlap in the front 10. Blaine wasted no time in setting the fastest time of the day at 9; 18 on the first lap, 50 seconds faster than anyone. Raines and Murphy, the veterans, had a see-saw battle for the full hour. Mickey Dunlap made an excellent charge through the pack over the narrow course from eighth to fourth. But it was Elledge on a Yamaha from the green to the checkered flag with Murphy second and Raines third. Hadlock hits a double at Fernley MX By Wretched Racer WINNEMUCCA. NV. FEB. I Two weeks ago, Robbie Hadlock cleaned up the Open Pro class at Fernley. This weekend the venue was Fernley again and again Hadlock aced both Open Pro motos plus both 125cc Pro motos, all on Hmodel Yamahas. The event was promoted by the Western State Racing Association (who also puts on the legendary Virginia City Grand Prix) and Hadlock's wins put him way out in front in 1981 WSRA points. Femley's damp sand course. thanks to a week of snow showers, was in good shape for running counter-clockwise _ this trip. The very chilly day was tough on spectators but ideal for racing. When the porta· potties finally did ar· rive. it became a perfect day at the track. First Open moto, Hadlock flat outran everybody. Conrad Stitser, on his old standby KTM, and Jay Heying debuting a new Honda CR450 came in second and third. After this mota. two of the Pros were disqualified for pit riding. So racers take note: The WSRA is really tough on pit riders. Second moto was one of the most ex· citing I've ever seen. Heying banzaied the holeshot with Hadlock pressuring. Half a lap along, Hadlock bailed on some back course whoops, ran alongside his bike on one side, bounced to the other side to run along some more, and bounced back aboard his YZ465, all without slacking off fromWFO. Meanwhile. Heying was getting used to his new Honda and really cutting hot laps. Hadlock finally closed on Heying and in the front section right in front of the crowd. Hadlock stuffed a wheel under Heying and literally elbowed his way by. Next comer. Heying tried to return the favor. but was muscled to the ground by Hadlock. The tumble bent Heying's machine badly enough to ca.use him to lose a lap before resuming the battle. Hadlock went on to win, Stitser moved up to second again and Dan Simonian (Yam) picked off the number three spot. That also turned out to be the overall finishing order. Hadlock aced both 125cc Pro motos, too, getting something of a tussle from Kevin "Goofy" Truax (Yam). Second mota, Hadlock was so far ahead he once took a substantial soil sample without threatening his lead. Fernley's first/second turn combo was the place to spectate during starts. Besides the aforementioned Open Novice pilup, the 250cc Novices held a first-moto destruction derby there and the 125cc Novices stacked up like cordwood both their motos. The Minis made it through and, since "Radical" Randy Kay was out with a shoulder injury, Chris Harjes, "Termite" Flory and Greg Searle led the way for the huge Mini field. Results OP EX: 1. A.
