Flame, smoke. and considerable lubricating oil were thrown and the din was

Most such moton were used on the

Time for Hayes
It's almost that time of year againl
Election time, tha I is ...
Bob Hayes is running for Los
An~les City Council. Now we can
help those who belp us. Hayes has
been a great supporter of off· road
vehicle use. and he's a biker too.
Normally, I try to refrain from
commenting on "internal politics."
But now, I feel I mUit. I mUit say
lOme things concerning Rob Rasor's
"From AMA" column (AMA Desert
Watch, No. 10, January 1981).
While I do feel Mr. Rasor is quite
correct about the need to brandish
"legal symbols", I do take grave
exception to his remarks about the B·
to· V. Mr. Raaor, in his review of "bad·
ground," omits a few salient points.
for example:
1. Louis McKey, and many others,
~ AMA and Diaria 57 to
take aaion to regain the B·to·V.
_They did nothing.
2. Diltria 57 has consistently refuIed
to take IItrOng and/or effective
aaion to protect rider's rights from
BLM abuse. (All the while sitting
on a very plump "legal defense
fund.")
5. Diarict 57 has consistently refuIed
to work. with other ORV organiza·
tions to provide for an effective,
consistent strategy to combat
BLM's abURI. (At one point a D·
57 official stated that D·57 and
the other ORV groupe had nothing
in common.)
4. Racing interests within Distria 57
have consistently. testified to BLM
in a manner detrimental to all
other "dirt bike" users (including
other AMA members).
5. The B-to-V "trail rides" have, to
date, been our most effective (~d
most times only) form of protest. I
am firmly convinced that without
the "trail rides" and Louis McKey's
actions BLM would have dared
far greater abuses. The "trail
rides" and Louis McKey's actions
have had several beneficial con·
sequences, namely:
a. A large group of riders have
been made aware of the "prob·
lems" we have with BLM and
the Desert Plan.
b. Many have been motivated to
become aaively involved.
C. BLM, Sierra Club, and others
have been made to realize that
we are not going to go away
simply because they wish it.
d. The greatest benefit is that the
"trail rides" gave us time: time
for Rob Ruor. AMA and Dia·
ria 57 to get involved and
aaually start doing lOmething.
(Without the "trail rides", long.
coune point-to-point bike races
would he a dead issue.)
I am extremely glad to see AMA
finally join the fray. If they want fo
project a tough ima~; I'm for it. If
they want to carry the fight into the
couns, u NOC and CORVA have
done for years; that's great. But. don't
disparage the foundations upon which
your current actions are built.
Without Louis McKey and the "trail
rides" you would still be cowering in a
comer. trying not to anger the all·
powerful BLM. Build on these
foundations, be proud of them; if you
DOW' have a better solution. we will all
be with you. We have a big enough
fight ahead, without an internal war
to determine a ~peclting order." I
suggest that we all get on with it.
