TEN YEARS AGO Over 160 riders were on hand for the first AMA professional half mile of the year at Ascot Park. In the Expen main event, Triumph-mounted Tom Roc:Jtwood took the win in front of Keith Mashburn's Yamaha and Dave Aldana's BsA. Kenny Roberu (Yam) bested Stan Walters in the Junior feature and Sal PalUIO grabbed the Novice main. Scott Autrey came back from mechanical troubles in Novice competition to win the speedway exhibition over Bill Cody and Rick Woods. Out of state riders took the top three places in the 250cc Expen class at a motocross at Cyclespons Park in Houston, TX. Californians John DeSoto and Tim Han placed 1-2, in front of Ohio's Dick Burleson and first Texan Wyman Priddy. Malcolm Smith and Ed Shinault teamed to take the motorcycle win in the Laguna Salada 200 off-road race near Mexicali. Gene Fetty finished second with the team of Bob Ewing and Preston Petty third. Founh overall, first 125cc was the father and son team of Earl and Larry Roeaeler. The first Winter-AMA event was held in Orlando, FL, and the 250cc class saw Barry Higgins and Gary Bailey ride to the top two spots. Mike Runyard defeated Bryan Kenny to win the Open class. J.N. Robens again rode at the head of the pack in a 0-37 European Scrambles, winning the Open class with Rich Thorwaldson finishing second. Mike Patrick showed Tom Poteet the way to the checkered flag in the 250cc race and Mitch Mayes topped the Trailbikes. Paul Garnant was named Manager of U.S. Suzuki's Racing Depanment. Prior to the appointment, Garnant served as Suzuki's National .Service Manager. Details on the construction of Evel Knievel's Skycycle were announced. It was utilizing a steam jet engine (which used superheated Tumwater from Olympia Brewing Co.) after discovery that the smallest available solid fuel rocket would launch the machine on an Arizona to Utah journey. Kitievel planned to jump the Snake River later in the year. Pat McCaul, Dennis Huff and Bill Budde won the feature events at the Hi Hats M.C. benefit scrambles in Maninez, CA. The proceeds of the event went to a medical fund established to help six little girls injured in an auto accident. Preston Gerber was the Open class winner in a scrambles held at Fairfield, UT.
