DG Golden State Series: Round three Glover dominates stadium styled track By Terry Whyte. F,REMONT, CA,JAN. 18 A short, tight course with challenging jumps greeted the competitors as 300 Continental Mota-sports Club Pros rolled into Fremont for the third round of the 1981 DG Golden State 6 Series. The event would prove to be a sweep for Yamaha riders with Broc Glover doing double duty in the 250 and 500cc races and Scott Burnworth picking up t~ laurels in t~ 12Sec Pro contest. All three cLuses featured the most intenlc racing to date in the new Ieries. GIOYer had hia handI full right- ing off Wheelsmith Maico rider Marty Tripes in both t~ 250 and 500cc races while Burnworth wat challenged by Suzuki rider Ron Turner and ProTrac Yamaha rider Danny "Magoo" Chandler. The Vererans cia-. continued their traditional races between Pro motos. Bill Saltzman threatened to break fellow Maico rider Alan Olson's hold on the Veteran Expert class by taking the first moto ho1eshot aDd cbal1euging Olson th~t the day's activities. Olson prevailed in tbe eDd with a clear moto sweep and Saltzman had to settle for the runner-up bonors ahead of Huslty rider Rocky Coursen. 12SccPro "We had the works engine in a stock chassis," commented Scott Burnworth after winning a tough battle against Danny Chandler, "and it really worked out greatl" Burnworth and Chand1er had puled and repaased each other in a classic second moto duel, but Burnworth came out on top at he had in the first moto. Chand1er grabbed the ho1eshot away from Burnworth at the start of moto one, but overcooked the sweeper past the start area on lap two and took a trip to the turf at his front wheel waahed out. BurnwoJlh quickly moved into t~ front position and opened a safe lead over t~ batde for second between Yamaha riders Scott Manning, Erik Kehoe and Mike Beier. Chandler remounted far downfield at Suzuki rider Ron Turner moved up from a bad start to challenge Kehoe aDd Beier. Magoo palled 10 riders in one lap's time to work baelt into t~ top 10 and put t~ pressure on Suzuki rider George Holland who wat leading the points race through t~ first two rouDd of the series. "Radical" Ron Turner put the moves on Beier aDd Kehoe to nail down the number two slot at the moto reached the halfway point. Magoo soon followed Turner's lead and danced hia water-pumper into third leaving Beier, Kehoe, Holland, Manning and Yamaha rider Phil Larson to argue over fourth place at the white flag came out. Turner wat unable to reel in Burnworth and the positions held at the chec1ters. Holland timed the Fremont baeltwards-falling gate perfectly to lead the paclt through the first turn of moto two. Burnworth latched onto Holland's rear wheel and waited for an opening at Chandler settled into third aDd Lanoo worked into fourth. Bumworth inched wad of Holland at the completion of the first lap with Chandler quicldy following suit stuffing his way past both former minibike stan and into the lead. At the eDd of lap three, the order Wat Chandler, Burnworth, Holland, Larson, Yamaha rider Jon Nelson, Beier, A,J. Whiting on a Yamaha and Turner. Holland bailed on the next go 'round while Turner grabbed a handful aDd flew past Whiting, Beier and Nelson.
