score. Keeping the Husky riders honest was Juan Benavidez who put his Yamaha 465 into second in the first moto and backed it up with a fourth place in molO two to capture second overall. - DiStefano clinched third overall by placing in the number three slot at the checkers in race two. Robert Reisinger managed to pick up fourth overall as the only rider to ride both the 250cc and Open Pro races. Jim Weinert finished sixth overall on his first Wheel· smith-sponsored Maico ride. He had to start in the hole in the first molO and work his way into the lead. MOIO two saw him with the same problem and more. When he had taken the lead and was nearing the finish, he slid out in the big sandwash and lost the lead. Up and back into the race, he was able to regain the lead and continue on for the win. The 125cc Intermedia te/ Pro race was actually two and one-quarter molOS, due to a crash which brought out the black flag and necessitated a restaTl. It didn't mailer. The 125cc race is usually a Johnny O'Mara benefit and today was no exception. Johnny 0' holeshot all three starts and his overall lead was dependent only upon how far into the race you looked. As a mailer of mild interest, he not only lapped all the IDlermediates in both races but also passed all but second and third places of the Pro ranksl This 125cc Pro class is a marvel of consistency, with the top four winners finishing in that order in both molOS. This was the last point race for 1980, so when you get your official results. you should also know your final standings. Results 18 60 NOV: 1. 51..., Kothandrxi (Yaml. 60 INT: 1. Rob Rotlins ~~~~~~~~~.~~. ~~~.- .. - Jennings, Hansen, Kehoe victorious at SSM MX By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, DEC. 20 Team Honda's domination of motocross at Saddleback Park continued as Donnie Hansen swept both motos of the 250cc Pros. Battling with Hansen were Kawasaki riders Warren Reid and Goat Breker, Suzuki teamster Darrell Shultz, Honda's Johnny O'Mara, LOP's Mark Lawrence, Husky Pro Circuit rider Clark Jones and Kawasaki support star Robert Reisinger. O'Mara was quickest out of the blocks in moto one and carried his lead through the fi rst la p as the field of riders sellied into position. O'Mara's ride was short lived however, as his chain derailed from the rear sprocket and Hansen took over the lead. Reid moved into second place as Breker trailed and Shultz kept the pressure on the front three. Reisinger charged into the number five position as the molO neared the end and the final order was set. "Holeshot" Hansen lived up to his nickname in moto two as he powered into the early lead followed by Reisinger, Breker, Shultz and Clark Jones. Hansen was in full control of the moto from start to finish but the race for second was tight as Breker and Resisinger worked their mounts to the limit. Shultz lost half a lap trying to unclog his fuel vent and dropped to 10th at the checkers. Reisinger held off Breker for the runner-up slot but Breker clinched the second overall honors with Reisinger picking up third and Jones fourth. Minibike stars A.J. Whiting and Erik Kehoe dueled on big bikes with the two competitors splilling the moto wins and Kehoe claiming the overall 125cc Pro win. Honda rider Craig Dale and Suzuki ace Bob Ellioll tried to play spoiler roles but both had to settle for downfield finishing positions. Dale went home with the third overall money, Ellioll with fourth. Newly signed Husky riders Jeff Jennings, Steve Rhyan and Tony DiStefano provided the spectators with a show in the Open Pro class as Jennings went on '_l9:~"-~ nee..witb ... -pepfe~- l-}O 125cc NOV: 1. Benavidez banzais atDeAnzaMX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, DEC. 14 With the holidays closing in, many regular MXers decided to stay at home, but there was still a base of hard core fanatics at DeAnza Cycle Park to enjoy the pamally redesigned track. Among them was Fred Combs, who proved 10 be the hOliest rider of the day. In both motos , of the 250cc Pro class, Comhs piloted his Pomona Valley Kawasaki to the win convincingly over another Pomona Valley rider, Keith Dysert. The Open Pro class was on the track at the same time as the 250s and it was Juan .Benavidez on his Yamaha 465 who was able to give Combs the best run for his money. As a matter of fact, Benavidez led the first I g laps of the first combined moto, but then lost his footpeg on one side and was forced 10 let Combs take over. Both riders still took the win in their respective classes. In the next race Benavidez took the lead early from another Open class rider, Ken Taylor (Yam), and then took it all the way home. Combs was soon easily in command of his race and was content to follow Benavidez across the line. Taylor was second Open c1asser and Dysert was second 25Occ. Rich Hoffman (Suz) ran a strong race in the 125cc Intermediate class and will soon be trying the Expert ranks. In the first molO he simply ran away from everyone in his class as well as the 250s and Opens which were on the same row. But his task was much harder in the second round when he hit a downed rider on the first lap and crashed himself. Although he was slow in gelling restarted, he still managed 10 pass everyone in his class as well as the 250s and Opens again. Second in the 125cc class was John Dimmill (Yam) ahead of Mike Mahurin (Yam). In the 125cc Novice class it was Jim Pearson (Suz) taking the win. Pearson led most of the first molO, but a last lap slip up gave the win to Bryan Davis. In the next race it was Davis' ·turnfa ba~Ra-Pd-ttJMs.:-He· fiftimed a considerable distance behind Pearson in third place. Craig Bua was second on his Suzuki. Results PEE WEE: 1. Turner tops first CMC 4-stroke TT By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, DEC. 14 The expert track builders at Saddleback Park designed and groomed an excellent TT style course for the inaugural running of the Continental Moto-sports Club's Four-Stroke slideways event. Setting early fast times on the track were David Gerig on a Kelvin Franksprepared 500 Honda and Ron Turner, riding the super polent Horsepower Factory XR. Turner and Gerig made it a two man show for much of the after· noon as they went 1-2 in both the Open Pro and 500cc Pro races. Turner took command of the duel early in each race as he hooked his Honda's power up with the tacky Saddleback course and kept Gerig fighting through his roost. Gerig stayed in the hunt with some berserkly-styled sliding techniques but was unable.to dethrone Saddleback's most consistent victor. Steve Chandler rode his Yamaha to the third place slot in the Open Pro battle while Randy Blevins followed the Turner/Gerig duel to the flag in the 500cc class on a Yamaha thumper. As a side note, former three-time National MX Champ Gary Jones gave TT a try and picked up seventh place in the 500cc Pros, riding a street legal XLSOO that he rode to the races! Try that with a 465cc. In Ihe Veteran Masters class Chuck "Feets" MineTl pushed his ancient BSA single into combat with Horsepower Factory riders Jim O'Neal and Tim Daily. O'Neal came out on top with room to spare as MineTl and Daily dropped off the pace towards moto's end. Daily hung on to finish second while Feets sellied for third and ex· claimed, "Let's do this again'" Cliff Lell rode his Yamaha/Honda mini to victory in the Mini Expert division. Lett shoehorned the only four-stroke mini engine available into the superior handling Yamaha chassis and blew the wheels off second place finisher Rick Atkins. Mike Word slid his Honda in for third with Jobo Greenway picking up fourth. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Ron Turner lHan); 2. David Gerig (Hanl; 3. Steve Chand(er(Vaml. 500 PRO: 1. Ron Turner (Honl: 2.
