D. ~nlral Pipeline Newman, Spencer, Rakestraw winners at Whitney MX By Charlie Wiese WHITNEY, TX, NOV. ~~ North Central Motocross continued with the racing, weather and track conditions improving with each drop of the gate as dirt enthusiasts from Micro to Four Wheel Drive went for it all day long. The exciting day of racing was definitely spectator worthy with "Mugen" Mel Newman, Kirk "The Kid" Spencer and Mark "Peaches" Rakestraw taking overall wins in the "Texas tough" Pro classes at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch. What could be considered intermission was filled with plenty of excitement with three crowd-pleasing events, the first of which was a Three Wheeler race that was won by Travis "Tapped Out" Motley (Hon) with Beth Surber (Hon) in second at the end of the action-filled event. The second event that was new as well as exciting was the Four Wheel Drive class that was run on a special course with plenty of water added for special effects. When the sloppy event was over, Jerry Surber, Jr. Oeep) had the quickest run in the timed event with Steve Stewart taking his Toyota to second in the first ever Four Wheel Drive competition at Lake Whitney. If action is what you wanted, you should have seen the 1~5cc Pros go for it as "Mugen" Mel Newman (Mug) took the lead in each moto when the gate hit the ground and piloted his way to consecutive wins. However, in round one, Chuck "The Hulk" Dawson (Yam) applied some pressure in early action as "Mugen" Mel gave "The Hulk" all he wanted with third place going to Keith Davis (Hon). Round two was much the same with LCS' Newman taking an easy win as Dawson faded to seventh via soil sample problems. Randy "Fluid Form" Sullivan put on a beautiful display of come-from· behind riding in round one and he was back for more in round two as he ended up second in the moto as well as the overall column after a fourth in round two. Keith Davis took his TCR Honda to third overall with a pair of threes as Big "0" Yamaha's Dawson finished the day in fourth. Kirk "The Kid" Spencer (Yam) took off the kid gloves in 250cc Pro when he put a second round do·or·die last lap pas: .that put him at the head of the dass. ) In round one, Husky's Derek W~ .lng was flawless as he sped to victory after moving by early leader Mike "Dr. 1" Jones (Yam). At the end of round one, Weddding was in command as "The Kid" moved to the second position just ahead of "Dr. 1" with Kirk Dillon (Yam) in fourth. Round two had "The Kid" out front and on the gas only to drop to third when he took an unexpected soil sample that allowed Jones and Wedding to slip by. Spencer remounted and moved by Wedding just before the white flag. On the final lap, Wedding's bike went belly up as Spencer put a brilliant pass on Jones for the overall win. Jones recovered for second, Dillon finished in third with Wedding winding up fourth overall with a seventh in round two after a two· month layoff from the race scene. The final race of the day was the demanding Open Pro class that was dominated by Carter Yamaha's Mark "Peaches" Rakestraw. Rakestraw was flawless as he took both rounds with teammate Kirk Spencer keeping close company in each molO. Third after quite a battle was Dallas Yamaha's Steve Mulholland, who finished third in each moto with fourth place going to Brian Evans (Mug), who finished fourth in each round. Jorski impressive at Oklahoma MX By Rebecca Sands OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, NOV. 16 Once again, Trey jorski's green winged machines made a clean sweep of all three Expen classes at Motorcycle Raceway's day race. As a sparse turnout of spectators watched, the weather grew colder and wetter, forcing track owner Tommy Newman to cut Novice and Amateur classes from five laps the ftTSt moto to three. Experts were cut from seven to five. Both motos of the 1~5cc Expert class saw Jorski jump into first the first lap and stay there. Competition behind him was heated. Todd Smith (Kaw), who ftnished second both motos, did some fine riding, but not without challenge from Tulsa's Gavin Punch (Suz) who accepted two third-place finishes. Lance Crawford (Yam) captured two fourths. Jorski again dominated in the Open Expert class, but Jim Thomas, riding a new '81 Yamaha, confidently crossed the checkers in second place the first moto. Todd Smith (Kaw), with a bad start, worked his way through to take third. The second moto, Thomas rode after Jorski with Smith after him. Thomas withstood Smith's pressure to claim second. • ------ i T~O YAMAU-Jl E ~ 24020 Narbonne Ave.• Lomita.
