Gerig's fU"St moto romp to the checken came at the expense of Yamaha rider Micky Dymond who struggled vainly in an attempt to close within striking distance of the fleet Husky pilot. Tony DiStefano powered his bigbore Swedish iron into contention after a poor start and pulled close to Dymond to place third at the finish. Pre-race favorite Roben Reisinger suffered problems that dropped the new Kawasaki suppon rider to 12th at the finish. Gerig planted his knobbies firmly into the soil on an extra nice Saddleback course and moved into the early lead of moto two. Gerig soon held a commanding lead over the field but Reisinger was on the move from a midpack stan and as the moto wound down he closed rapidly on the cruising Gerig. The final few laps bad the crowd on their feet as Reisin~r's char~ fell shon at the checken and Gerig completed his perfect ride. Dymond picked up third for the moto and second overall as DiStefano went home with ~hird place money and Reisin~r finished founh, Reisin~r took his reven~ or revenue. if you will - in the 250cc Pro class as he held off an amazing char~ by Honda team rider Jim Gibson in the second moto. Gibson had powered away with the initial moto leaving Reisinger to battle with Gerig and Maico rider Ed Amet. Reisinger finished in the number two slot as Gerig finished third. Amet fourth and Kawasaki rider Dave Hamada rounded out the top five, Gibson tangled with the gate at the stan of race two and finally charged up the Saddleback stan hill nearly a half lap down of the leaden. Reisin~r was quickly away with the front position while Gaig and Arnet trailed in second and third, Gibson wasted little time slicing through the pack and was soon in founh behind Honda rider Bryan Maloney who gamely held off Gibson for several laps. Arnet dropped from the race with mechanical difficulties and Gibson sandwiched himself between Maloney and the Kelvin Franks-tuned Honda of Gerig. Gerig's mount seemed an even match for the factory Honda and it was several laps before Gibson was able to dislodge Gerig from second place. Gibson quickly reeled in Reisinger as two lapped riden blocked the traclt and refused to allow Reisinger to pass until the last lap. With Gibson on his tail Reisinger pushed his Uni-TraIr.er to the limit and hung on to wUJ.Reisinger picked up the overall win money with Gibson getting the runner-share of the pune. Gerig rounded out the top three. Suzuki rider Bob Elliott won the first 125cc Pro race on a new waterpumper but failed to finish the second moto. leaving Yamaha rider Mike Beier, Todd Peterson and Scott Manning to argue over the fint place laurels. Beier seemed to have the second moto sewed up until slowed by a deflating rear tire. Petersen went on to reach the checken fint and take the overall win. Beier finished with a 2-2 score for second overall and Manning picked up third.
