.. , "... _ ;""" 1. _ ,. ·Caned. Northern Califomi.Northern SANTA CYCLE SEZeeo Desert for 11 years now. Each year they heard the same lament from some of the riders: "If the loops were shorter, more riders would come out." So this year the £lyer said that there were new shorter loops. The flyer read: "Three different loops. You will ride a forest loop, then a desert loop, and then a mountain loop. Each loop about !l5 miles. Your buddy with the MX gas tank has no excuse now." They had another idea - a Beginners class. If you had not won a trophy before in a motorcycle race, you got to try the desert and only have to complete the first two-loops and the entry fee was half that of the regular fee. No OMRA points, however. Well, the plan worked as 412 riders showed on a snowy, read "wet, snowy," day. That meant that 412 bucks went to the Duck in California for the cause. Plus, it was a considerable number more than the previous few 100s. Brad Turnidge, riding a KTM out of Dallas, OR, was first Open Expert as well as the event's overall winner. As he wheeled into the pennant-lined finish funnel, he seemed genuinely surprised to be the first in. As it turned out, Ken Maahs on a Husky led the first two loops with a two-minute lead into the pits. Maahs got lost just before the finish and that was it. Maahs has never had a great amount of luck at the High Desert. He certainly was fast those first two loops. The start was the usual. At 10 a.m., they lit the bomb and lowered the flag and the Experts were off. They could at least see the smoke. By the time the Amateurs left the line, the snow cloud had descended into the valley and the big, wet snow flakes packed into goggles making it a trifle hard to see. Only 209 of the 412 starters finished. Richard McUne on a Husky finished second in the Open Expert class as well as overall. Joe McConnick was first 250cc Expert on a Husky and third overall. He can thank Ron Dillon for the latter as Ron stopped by his motor home to pick up a spray of roses for his fiance Connie. He did this while sliding into the finish fourth overall. Ron was not really worried about losing a position or 20, for today was the day he had decided to propose marriage. On his shirt, he had the words, "Connie, will you marry me?" and below that "yes, no, not sure" in blocks to be checked by her later. It didn't take her long to check the yes block. Helmets off to you Ron for a class act. Ron was third Open Expert and fmt Yamaha; Greg Beevers got second 250cc Expert on a Yamaha. Steve McCall, also on a Yamaha, was third 250cc Expert and sixth overall. McCall rode the fmt loop with a fouled plug, stopped to change it and rode like the wind to get back his time. Tenth overall and first 125cc Expert was Steve Henry on a Honda. Eric Hall, a motocrosser from Camas, WA, in his fmt-ever desert race, finished a respectable 27th overall and fifth • 125cc Expert on a Yamaha.
