I W:~:;;~~"''''''·CoUf'''~~ !! e Ii Moto two started with a Jennings holeshot and Turner locked to his rear wheel. With Turner pressuring, Jennings turned some very fast laps and nearly held off Turner's challenge but once again the second half of the moto belonged to the tireless Turner. Jennings followed Turner to the payoff window with Reisinger picking up the third place share of the purse, and Suzuki rider Bob Rutter edged out Lunde for fourth overall. o 00 0') ~ Results OPEN PRO: 1. Turner grabs bIg share of SSM $800MX By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, OCT. 11 Team Suzuki's "Radical Ron" Turner topped the Open Pro class in runaway fashion, then stormed back to defeat a large ·18 field of top 250cc Pros. Turner's day was almost flawless, winning all four motos he entered and being challenged by only Yamaha rider Ed Arnet in the flTSt Open moto and Honda-mounted JeffJennings in the 250cc class. In addition to the exciting Pro action, almost 200 sponsmen riders vied for $1000 in prizes sponsored by Motocross Action Magazine and donated by Mugen, DC, JT Racing, MXA, PJl, Scott USA, Bel-Ray, Sun Line, Oakley and DeCoster Products. Moto one of the Open Pros featured Turner and Arnet in a race· long drive from mid-pack. Yamaha riders Bob Marino, Bill Hagen, Mickey Dymond and Bob Schulz jumped into the early lead for first while Turner and Arnet suffered from poor starts. With Arnet leading the way and Turner close behind the two riders began picking off the leaders near the halfway point. As the pace quickened near the fmish Turner slashed past Arnet and carried his momentum as he flew by Marino for the win. Arnet also passed Maimo before the checkers with Dymond finishing fourth, Schulz fifth and Hagen sixth. Arnet was unable to make the start of the second Open race after falling in the first 250cc Pro moto and this left Turner with a clear shot at the win. Turner easily opened up a safe lead by lap eight and cruised the remaining 10 laps with machine like precision. The battle for second went down to the wire with Marino edging Hagen and Dymond. Marino picked up the second place money with Hagen finishing third overall and Dymond fourtb. The 250cc Pro battle was a two rider duel between Turner and Jeff Jennings. Turner gOt a better start in the first moto but still had to contend with Kawasaki rider Robert Reisinger, Yamaha-mounted Tim Lunde and Jennings. Jennings closed on the Suzuki test rider several times in the early going but at the checkers Turner was well in front. VETS: 1. Lynn McGraw (Yam); 2. Jim Galatioto (!Caw); 3. Riel< WIIlOon (KTMI. Joe HIgh school season sfarts af Corona By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, OCT. 10 Corona Raceway gave a preview of the upcoming high school motocross season last week with the annual Todd Miller memorial invitational event. This year, as last year, the top teams are going to be Redlands High and North High, the teams that ran away with the top two spou. Putting in a surprisingly good finish was Arlington High in third. Last year Arlington was handicapped by a small team, but this time around they have the enthusiasm to make a serious challenge. The winning Redlands team was topped by 125cc Senior winner Mike Edwon (Yam), who also raced and won the unattached l25cc Pro class. Second in the 125cc Senior class was another Redlands rider, Richard Hoffman (Suz). Nate Rauba (Suz) was the only rider to break up the Redlands domination of the class, taking two thirds for Arlington over Redlands' rider Todd Gibboney (Yam). North owed most of its points to the Mini Senior riders. James Conti (Hon) topped that class over North teammate Eric Steil (Suz). Redlands' rider John Green (Hon) was third. The class that gave Arlington its best finishes was the 125cc Novice race where Tony Dejulio (Kaw) and Mark Decker (Yam) finished first and third for the school, being split up by North·s Gus Kopp (Yam). Upland High finished in fifth place overall, but they had one of the top riders of the night in Pat Weber (Suz). Weber took both the 250cc and Open Senior classes. Redlander Tom Hodgin (Suz) was second both times. The unattached divisions saw a great duel in the 250cc Pro class between Andy Northrup (Hon) and Juan Benavidez (C-A). The two riders took off with the lead in both motas and went at it hot and heavy. The battle became so intense that at one point in the first round, they crashed into one another and both went down. Then they simply remounted and continued where they left off. Northrup was the first one to cross the line in both rounds. Taking a distant third was Suzuki of Riverside rider Danny Burtt. Promoter Ron Crandall was experi. menting with an old idea of having an Expert class to accommodate riders stranded in the wide gulf between the Intermediate ranks and the Pros. Taking Corona's first 250cc Expert class was Mike Roach (Yam) with -a 1·3 score. After winning the first moto, he was leading the second moto until the last lap when a crash put him behind Ron Rehnquist (Yam) and Mike Blake (Hon). Overall, it was Roach, Blake and Rehnquist. Kofa/arvl doubles afCRC.'ghf mlnlcross finale By Nanette Marie VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 10 The California Racing Club wrapped up both its Tri-Valley Suzuki Dealers' Summer Night Motocross Series and its 1980 night minicross series at Indian Dunes. During the evening's action, the drawing was held for the grand prize of the whole series, a brand new Suzuki RM80. and the winning ticket was held up on the mini track by Pee Wee/ Junior Cycle rider Ronnie Densford, one of the many riders who attended every race of the Friday night series put on by CRC and the sponsoring Suzuki dealers. The second race was the Junior Cycles, Stock Novices and Experts. Kal-Gard/l000 Oaks Yamaha rider Kyle Lewis ran away with both of the motos, as he usually does in the Expert ranks, but in the Novices, the action was hot and heavy all night long. Bubba Erickson, riding for Bell Helmets, grabbed the holesbot in the ftnt moto, and ran his lead all the way to the checkers for a wire·to·wire victory. Jeff Reynolds and Steven Kotajarvi battled for second the entire way, but Kotajarvi was the rider in command of the TUJlDeT-Up slot at the fmish, Reynolds having to settle for third ahead of Chris Cole and Troy Welty. Round two was all Kotajarvi's, Just like Erickson, he took over from the stan, and went wire to wire for the victory, which also gave him the first ~ trophy as we1l. Erickson suffered a mid'pack start and had to charge up from sixth in the first moto and tty to catcb Kotajarvi. His bid came up short as he slipped by Ronnie Densford, Welty and Reynolds, but could not get around Chris Cole, the runner·up, and took third at the wire. Erickson's third was good enough for second 0Yerall, with Cole grabbing third. In the Modified ponion, many of the same riders were back out and
