Never highly puubliciz...t1 due to the nature of the event - quickest to LA wins - this year's run was no exception. There were two motorcycle entries, one a five rider team of George Egloff, James Fonney. Ray Bockie, Geoff Adams and Perry Bushong riding a 1979 BMW R65. The team finished in 58 hours. 25 minutes which was well off the 1979 two-wheeled finish of 44 hours. Egloff was also on that t...am. Behr also ran into weather problems and finished some 70 hours after starting. The overall winn...r was a Mazda RX 7 which. completed the approximately 2.959 miles in !I!I hours, !l9 minutes averaging nearly 90 mph after departing New York on October 18. Ever wondered how to go about getting good training to be a motor· cycle mechanic? The American Motorcycle School in Santa Fe Springs, CA. has recaived FedenII funding to train and certify motorcycle mechanics. The pilot program, which starts Nov. 3, is open to Los Angeles County residents who are 16-21 years old. The only water-cooled bike at San Diego was Goat Breker's new KX which also featured a small front disc brake. He only rode it for the first few laps of practice, though, before returning to his" regular air-cooled 250. David wiD have his work cut out for him, racing the likes of Graeme Crosby on a Yoshimura Suzuki and Yamaha development rider Sadao Asami. The FIM Congress which concluded October 25 on the island of Malta saw no major rule changes in MX or road racing, according to AMA delegates Mike DiPrete and Bill Boyce. DiPrete was re-elected to a post on the MX and trials commission while Boyce was also returned to his position on the technical committee. The U.S. will again play host to three MX GPs: 500cc at Carlsbad on June 21. 125cc at MidOhio on July 19, and 250cc at Unadilla on July 26. Venezuela withdrew its bid for a road race GP due to track reconstruction but Argentina was awarded a GP and will open the World Championships on March 22. The FIM changed the name of reliability trials events to enduros, so it appears the ISDT will now be the ISDE or Intemational Six Days Enduro. A commillee is looking imo a change in tires for endurOll with emphasis on efforts to reduce erosion in areas where events are run.
