Snorteland grabs apairatCRC Saddleback MX By lee Taylor ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 28 Pete Snorteland took on a gnarly track and just plain out rode the best" of them at Saddleback Park, taking home top money in both the 6~n and 250cc Pro classes at this California RacingClub.MX. In the 250cc class, Snorteland had to battle Jeff Jennings, aboard a Honda, wheel to wheel throughout two motos. The first time around, Jennings jumped out into the lead with Maico-mounted Will Harper in second and Andy Kirker running third. With Tony DiStefano in fourth, Snorteland was fighting his way through and took over second. Kirker held tight to third and fought to hold back Richard Sands, aboard a Yamaha and new to the Pro game. DiStefano was plagued with trouble and DNF, leaving the top three positions to Jennings, Snorteland and Kirker as the checkered flag waved them across the line. When the machines came to life for the second round, Snorteland led the charge with Jennings on hill tail. and Kirker in third. The top three nders pulled away from the pack and a wheel-to-wheel duel went down between Snorteland and Jennings for the win. Jennings found himself blocked at every tum by lapped riders and used every trick in the book to close ground on Snorteland_ When the finish line loomed into sight, Snorteland led the way for the overall win, Jennings took home second place loot and third across the line went to Tony DiStefano_ Finishing third overall was Verg Butler with a 55 ride. The 250cc Intermediates, attacked Saddleback turf relentlessly. The- first moto saw a battle for the lead that any of the top three riders could have taken. Greg Taylor. aboard a Yamaha, led off the line and soon fou-nd himself in a battle for the lead with Tom Miller and Dave Fernandez. Miller took over command and left Fernandez in second to hold back Taylor_ Riders were going down all over the track with a huge pile-up at the finish line. Taylor edged himself back into second and barely held Fernandez to third for the rest of the moto. The second time around, Bob Johnson assumed command, holding Fernandez to second, and Glen Wells, who crashed after a beautiful stan in the first moto, in third_ Now it was Fernandez who bit the dust, leaving second open for Wells. Once more, Wells had trouble and Pat Weber was there and waiting, zooming into second and holding to moto's end. Tim Hammel, who never had a break the first time out, turned his Yamaha loose and broke into the third place slot. When the checkered flag waved them home. Johnson crossed over for the overall win. Weber held on to second for the moto and Hammel held firm in third. Taylor took second overall with a 2-5 ride and third went to Miller for a 1-6 ride. Results 5(Hj() NOV: ,. Bob Headworth IYam); 2. SEPT. 28 It was another hot SoCal day for the Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts annual trial school and fun trial. This year the event was held at Indian Dunes Cycle Park. The instructor for the day was Andre Plouff, a local Expert and National class rider. He gave a two hour class on some practice sections before the students and other entrants tackled the 1O-section loop. Each rider rode all 10 sections desgined for both Beginner and Novice class riders. Both classes made fout loops around the one and one half mile loop. The 10 sections varied from soft sand, requirin$. good body En$'lish and throttle control, to rocky gulhes, deep river crossings to vertical climbs and descents. Sections one and two required the techniques necessary to get the rider through soft sand and up powdery ledges. The next two put the riders in a rocky canyon covered with fallen tree limbs and rocks ranging up in size to that of a bowling ball. The riders then tried their hand at climbing up and coming back down a three and. a half foot high led~. After some sections of fallen trees and slippery leaf covered ground came the river crossing. The crossing was wide and the river bottom was loose, requiring good throttle control and weight distribution. The final section ran along the face of a mountain cliff. Beginner riders hopped up and over a large flat rock and then did battle with gooey mud and tall reeds. The Novices entered over the same rock but at about midway through the mud were directed up to a narrow ledge some 20 feet up via a soft sandy climb. Then they traveled along the face of the cliff and then made a left tum to a near vertical descent to the exit. Results NOVICE: ,. Scott R_I; 2. Jim DoughOf1y; 3. Chris Mc'Hugh; 4. Andy Codone; 5.
