The Open Money half mile was the premiere event at Corona, Wednesday night and 10 of of the best around were on hand to be bailie. It was Cannon who broke on top with Shawn Leipold in second and Boody third. Pete Hames, Bob Russell and Lawson rounded out the top six. On the third lap Leipold ran into trouble and dropped way back while Lawson went on the move and went by Russell. Hames and Boody to take over second. The top four now consisted of Cannon, Lawson, Boody and Hames. They remained constant for seven laps, the four literally separated from the rest of the field. Cannon's Rich Plueger. prepared Yamaha was running smooth and strong and he had picked the right line and was able to hold it in spite of Lawson and Boody dogging his steps every inch of the way. On the white flag lap Boody made his move and got by Lawson and was almost dead even with Cannon as the three came flying out of turn four. Cannon turned the wick up and brought it home with Boody and Lawson a close second and third. Hames, Craig Arm· strong and Rex Hailey rounded out the top six. The 250cc Money half mile was also chock full of good riders with 13 on hand to battle for the dough. It also had a few surprises when the results went up. Off the line it was Ross Klatt with Jeff Johnson, Pete Hames and Darren Hulbert riding double with him. It took the "Simi Flash," Hames one lap to put himself on top drop· ping Klatt to second, Johnson to third and Hulbert to fourth. From there on out it was follow the leader and thaI leader was Hames. The Open Money shon track wa another head on confrontation with Hames, Cannon and Boody. Hames found the line at the drop of the flag with Cannon and Boody in the 2-3 spots. Although the places never changed it wasn't for lack of trying as the pressure was never off for these three super riders. Nobody made a mistake and they were still 1-2·3 at the finish. The 250cc Money short track started out with Hames in the lead but on the third lap he got a bit of a scare as Jeff Johnson went blowing by. It was short lived as Hames came right back. One lap later Steve Elo, a nl'W face to Corona from back east followed Hames' lead and got by Johnson to take over second. On the white fla.s.I~p Johnson's bike went sour and Ross Klall moved into the third spot. With SO many 250cc Experts on hand the sportsmen were split into two divisions on the half mile so that no one would be eliminated. The first division saw Jeff Johnson lead the way from wire to wire. The duel was for second between Mike Redding and Mike Paulson. Redding led for the first four laps and then his brakes went out and Paulson was more than ready to take over. Redding hung on to third for two more laps before Greg Gaw dropped him to fourth. In the second division of 250cc Experts it was Darren Hulbert all the way with Tommy Wahon second and Ross Klatt third. Skip Cristy topped Ron Gitlin and Lenny Gainey to win the Amateur go. Turner cleans houseatCMC Saddleback By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 21 Suzuki's bionic motoc rosser, Ron Turner, came within inches of trying to re-establish the Conti!1e~ltal Moto-sp?r~s,C!.u~ .age. ol,d record of one rider winning all three Professional classes on a Sunday. Turner won the 250cc and Open classes but mechanical problems in moto one of the 125cc class shot down his hopes. Luft Shocks' Gary Denton, aboard a CR 125 Honda won the class just ahead of DG's Chris Heisser. Turner completely dominated the Open Pro class with two wins. In moto one Turner hit the track ahead ofJuan .Benavidez (Yam) and CMC's newest terror, Yamaha-mounted Micky Dymond. With Turner beginning to pull away from the field, Benavidez withdrew from the competition with apparent machine difficulties. This left Dymond to finish behind Turner and just ahead of Maieo·mounted Dale Lewis. At the first turn of moto two of the Opens, Lewis, Turner and Dymond again led the charge. By lap six, Randy Rodrigez (Mai) had moved into third place but by lap 10 he too withdrew when his Maico went south. Bill Keefe (Mai) had been running in the middle of the pack and late in the moto made his move on Dymond to take over third at the nag. Turner won the moto and the overall. Second overall went to Dale Lewis, an unsponsored and unsupported package of determination who could sure use a little help. Third went to Keefe in the moto with Dymond (2-4) collecting third overall. Tony DiStefano (Hus) finished fifth and fifth overall. Jeff Jennings (Hon) took the holeshot in moto one of the 250cc Pros with Turner, Scott Johnson (Hon), David Gerig (Hus) and Rick Maki (Yam) following. On lap five Turner squeezed by Jennings on an inside turn and from that point on the race for the lead was a two man battle_ Gerig moved ahead of Johnson on lap eight for third with Maki a solid fifth. On the last lap, Turner and Jennings were wheel to wheel all the way to the checkered nag with the win going to Turner. Coming through the last turn Johnson was on the outside and Gerig on the inside, side by side, smashing handlebars and literally elbow to elbow and Johnson's Honda put a little more power to the ground and outran the Gerig's Husky with both riders colliding at the finish line. Maki finished fifth behind Johnson and Gerig. Moto two was much of the same but this time Johnson and Gerig retired from the event early due to machine problems. Turner took the lead and brought it home for the win and the overall in his second class for the day. Jennings again chased Turner for the emire moto with Maki doing the same. Early in the moto, Maki looked like he had a good chance to overtake Turner for the lead but quickly lost ground and Jennings eventually passed him for second. The moto ended with Turner first, Jennings second and then Maki and Craig Gormley (Yam). In the 125cc Pro class, Gary Denton put his Honda through the paces to win the class with some strong pressure from Chris Heisser (Hon). Moto one could have been a dynamite event but a early crash on lap two involving the leader Heisser and second place runner Rick Maki (Yam) left Heisser in last place and Maki out with a hole in his pipe. Denton took over the lead and never looked back. Heisser came from dead last to finish third and with his moto two consistency enabled him to finish second overall. Behind Denton and Heisser in the overall order were Rik Neilsen (Yam) and Roger Hensley (Suz). Results MINI JR: 1. R. Gatica (Honl; 2. K. F"nge< ISuz); 3. S. EI.... (SUZ). 100cc JR: ,. J. Sun..
